Murder & Mayhem in East Tennessee by Dewaine A. Speaks Pdf

East Tennessee is gorgeous country, but the hills and hollers have a dark side. James Earl Ray, who had already assassinated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., created mayhem at Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary when he led six other men in a short-lived escape. Several thousand Cherokee Indians from East Tennessee were forced on what would later be called the "Trail of Tears." In the "Hankins Murder" case and in the triple killings in Oliver Springs, chaos and confusion resulted from the wrongful arrest and public accusations of innocent people. Jake and C.H. Butcher brought about bedlam with their banking scandal that at the time was unsurpassed in scope in the nation's history. Author Dewaine A. Speaks details these stories and more.

A Press Divided by David B. Sachsman Pdf

A Press Divided provides new insights regarding the sharp political divisions that existed among the newspapers of the Civil War era. These newspapers were divided between North and South, and also divided within the North and South. These divisions reflected and exacerbated the conflicts in political thought that caused the Civil War and the political and ideological battles within the Union and the Confederacy about how to pursue the war. In the North, dissenting voices alarmed the Lincoln administration to such a degree that draconian measures were taken to suppress dissenting newspapers and editors, while in the South, the Confederate government held to its fundamental belief in freedom of speech and was more tolerant of political attacks in the press. This volume consists of eighteen chapters on subjects including newspaper coverage of the rise of Lincoln, press reports on George Armstrong Custer, Confederate women war correspondents, Civil War photojournalists, newspaper coverage of the Emancipation Proclamation, and the suppression of the dissident press. This book tells the story of a divided press before and during the Civil War, discussing the roles played by newspapers in splitting the nation, newspaper coverage of the war, and the responses by the Union and Confederate administrations to press criticism.

Yes, Lord, I Know the Road by J. Brent Morris Pdf

The first comprehensive history of African Americans in the Palmetto State, spanning five centuries. From the first North American slave rebellion near the mouth of the Pee Dee River in the early sixteenth century to the 2008 state Democratic primary victory of Barack Obama, award-winning historian J. Brent Morris examines the unique struggles and triumphs of African Americans in South Carolina. Following an engaging introduction, Morris brings together a wide variety of annotated primary-source documents—personal narratives, government reports, statutes, newspaper articles, and speeches—to highlight the significant people, events, social and political movements, and ideas that have shaped black life in South Carolina and beyond. In their own words, anonymous and notable African Americans, such as Charlotte Forten, David Walker, and Jesse Jackson, describe the social and economic subjugation caused by more than three hundred years of slavery, the revolution wrought by the American Civil War and Reconstruction, and the post-Reconstruction civil rights struggle that runs to the present. Many of these source documents are previously unpublished; others have been long out of print. Morris proposes that reading the narrative-sources black Carolinians left behind brings life and relevancy to the past that will spark new public conversations, inspire fresh questions, and encourage historians to pursue innovative scholarly work. “For everyone interested in South Carolina history Yes, Lord, I Know the Road is a book that has long been needed. Thanks to the judicious selection of documents and thoughtful introductory material, Brent Morris has produced a very readable book on a complex and often contentious topic. It is an invaluable addition to South Carolina historiography—and to my bookshelf.” —Walter Edgar, author of South Carolina: A History “At last, we have a concise document book tracing one of the most troubled and inspiring paths in American history. Exploring this long, rutted road, we meet brave souls who stood tall—Boston King, Robert Smalls, Septima Clark. Morris’s varied collection will spark readers to dig deeper and learn more.” —Peter H. Wood, Duke University, author of Black Majority and Strange New Land “This thoughtfully curated documentary history of Afro-Carolinians spans five centuries with important, vivid, and compelling accounts of South Carolina’s twisted, stony road of anguish and achievement, oppression and hope. An informative introduction and concise headnotes provide historical context and make the book accessible to all students of South Carolina history.” —Michael Johnson, Academy Professor of History Emeritus, Johns Hopkins University

Doctor Squibb by Lawrence Goldtree Blochman Pdf

"Perhaps the most remarkable commentary on the remarkable life story of Dr. Edward Robinson Squibb is the fact that it is almost unknown today. A hundred years ago "Squibb" meant "ether" to the physicians and apothecaries of the United States. Dr. Squibb was a true pioneer in anesthesia. He received his M.D. degree in 1845, the year before Dr. W.T.G. Morton gave his first public demonstration of the use of ether to eliminate pain in surgery. Thus, Dr. Squibb's medical career not only paralleled the birth and growth of the era of anesthetics; at times the two were indistinguishable. As an assistant surgeon in the United States Navy, Dr. Squibb saw ether used and misused. He noted that its effect varied greatly, and that it was not always successful in producing deep anesthesia. Finding that the variations were a direct result of impurities and of uneven strength, he was the first to devise a method of making pure ether of uniform quality. He also invented a process of distilling ether with live steam, thus eliminating the danger of an open flame to so volatile a liquid. Once he standardized the manufacture of ether, he followed his product into the operating room to perfect the techniques of its administration and to study effective dosage. To this end he invented a mask to replace the inhaler of Dr. Morton. Uniformity and purity became a lifetime passion with Dr. Squibb, a crusade which was to embrace all pharmacy. This book is about Dr. Squibb the man, based on his private journals written over the course of his adult life. The whole constitutes a personal and sharply observed panorama of nineteenth-century Philadelphia, New York, and Brooklyn, a critical appraisal of the state of American medicine a century ago, and a vivid self-portrait of Dr. Squibb the man."--Preface.

Being Chosen by God by Rev. Dr. Cleveland Brown Pdf

30 I believe all are chosen from birth by God to make a difference in this world in the lives of others, and my book, Being Chosen by God, is a perfect example that God is with us in the best of times, worst of times, and all the time to help us and use us to serve one another to build His kingdom through those we come in contact with. We can change the world with love and the willingness to serve others. God said in His word that "what you have done to the least of these people, you have done it unto Me." When I was hungry you feed me, thirsty, you gave me drink, naked, you clothe me, a stranger you took me in, in prison, you came to see me, and sick, you came to visit me. God can use you to change someone's entire life or a city if you're willing to let Him lead you, and don't be afraid to step out and do what He asks you. God can and will use you. Never doubt who you are in Christ. Cleveland Brown was raised by Mattie and Jasper Brown, a true born-again servant of God, taught him to love God, trust God, have faith in God, serve others, and believe you are on this earth for a purpose. My life is a true witness that the Bible is a living word, God is real, and He cares for no one to perish but have everlasting life. God says, "You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you."

Wade Hampton by Rod Andrew Jr. Pdf

One of the South's most illustrious military leaders, Wade Hampton III was for a time the commander of all Lee's cavalry and at the end of the war was the highest-ranking Confederate cavalry officer. Yet for all Hampton's military victories, he also suffered devastating losses in his family and personal life. Rod Andrew's critical biography sheds light on his central role during Reconstruction as a conservative white leader, governor, U.S. senator, and Redeemer; his heroic image in the minds of white southerners; and his positions and apparent contradictions on race and the role of African Americans in the New South. Andrew also shows that Hampton's tragic past explains how he emerged in his own day as a larger-than-life symbol--of national reconciliation as well as southern defiance.
