Hancock's Diary, 1887 by R. R. Hancock Pdf

Excerpt from Hancock's Diary, 1887: Or a History of the Second Tennessee Confederate Cavalry As I wrote, during the war, merely for my own future reference, not then expecting to ever have my Diary published in book form, I omitted many, many items which should have been mentioned; therefore, soon after I began to rewrite the work for publication, I had five hundred letters printed for distribution among my comrades, and besides I have sent out hundreds of manuscript letters to let my comrades know what I was doing and what I wanted them to do. I regret to say that my Diary is not what I wish it to be, from the fact that so few of my comrades gave the desired and asked-for aid. I hope that they will not complain of omissions which they should have furnished. I have endeavored to give a sketch of the movements of the different commands (whether regiment, brigade, division, corps, or army) with which the First Battalion and Second Tennessee Cavalry moved - from General Zollicoffer's first campaign into Kentucky in September and October, 1861, to the last campaign of General Forrest into Central Alabama in March and April, 1865. I highly appreciate the following Indorsement. "To Our Comrades of the Second Tennessee Cavalry, and Others: "We have examined with great interest the manuscript pages of our Brother Hancock's work. It is fraught with a peculiar originality, and is a consecutive story in his own way of stirring scenes of the war that will pass as a panorama before the minds of all who participated in them. The Real Horse Soldiers by Timothy B. Smith Pdf

“This epic account is as thrilling and fast-paced as the raid itself and will quickly rival, if not surpass, Dee Brown’s Grierson’s Raid as the standard.” —Terrence J. Winschel, historian (ret.), Vicksburg National Military Park Winner, Operational/Battle History, Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Book Award Winner, Fletcher Pratt Literary Award, Civil War Round Table of New York There were other simultaneous operations to distract Confederate attention from the real threat posed by U. S. Grant’s Army of the Tennessee. Benjamin Grierson’s operation, however, mainly conducted with two Illinois cavalry regiments, has become the most famous, and for good reason: For 16 days (April 17 to May 2) Grierson led Confederate pursuers on a high-stakes chase through the entire state of Mississippi, entering the northern border with Tennessee and exiting its southern border with Louisiana. Throughout, he displayed outstanding leadership and cunning, destroyed railroad tracks, burned trestles and bridges, freed slaves, and created as much damage and chaos as possible. Grierson’s Raid broke a vital Confederate rail line at Newton Station that supplied Vicksburg and, perhaps most importantly, consumed the attention of the Confederate high command. While Confederate Lt. Gen. John Pemberton at Vicksburg and other Southern leaders looked in the wrong directions, Grant moved his entire Army of the Tennessee across the Mississippi River below Vicksburg, spelling the doom of that city, the Confederate chances of holding the river, and perhaps the Confederacy itself. Based upon years of research and presented in gripping, fast-paced prose, Timothy B. Smith’s The Real Horse Soldiers captures the high drama and tension of the 1863 horse soldiers in a modern, comprehensive, academic study. Readers will find it fills a wide void in Civil War literature.

Sherman's Horsemen by David Evans Pdf

Approaching Atlanta in July of 1864, William Tecumseh Sherman knew he was facing the most important campaign of his career. Lacking the troops and the desire to mount a long siege of the city, Sherman was eager for a quick, decisive victory. A change of tactics was in order. He decided to call on the cavalry. Over the next seven weeks, Sherman's horsemen - under the command of Generals Rousseau, Garrard, Stoneman, McCook, and Kilpatrick - destroyed supplies and tore up miles of railroad track in an attempt to isolate the city. This book tells the story of those raids. After initial successes, the cavalrymen found themselves caught up in a series of daring and deadly engagements, including a failed attempt to push south to liberate the prisoners at the infamous prison camp at Andersonville. Through exhaustive research, David Evans has been able to recreate a vivid, captivating, and meticulously detailed image of the day-by-day life of the Union horse soldier. Based largely upon previously unpublished materials, Sherman's Horsemen provides the definitive account of this hitherto neglected aspect of the American Civil War.

For Cause and Country by Eric A. Jacobson,Richard A Rupp Pdf

“An up-to-date, accurate, comprehensive and lively treatment of . . . arguably one of the bloodiest five hours during the American Civil War.” —The Civil War Gazette The battles at Spring Hill and Franklin, Tennessee, in the late autumn of 1864 were watershed moments in the American Civil War. Thousands of hardened veterans and a number of recruits, as well as former West Point classmates, found themselves moving through Middle Tennessee in the last great campaign of a long and bitter war. Replete with bravery, dedication, bloodshed, and controversy, these battles led directly to the conclusion of action in the Western Theater. Spring Hill and Franklin, which were once long ignored and seldom understood, have slowly been regaining their place on the national stage. They remain one of the most compelling episodes of the Civil War. Through exhaustive research and the use of sources never before published, the stories of both battles come vividly to life in For Cause & For Country. Over 100 pages of material have been added to this new edition, including new maps and photos. The genesis and early stages of the Tennessee Campaign play out in clear and readable fashion. The lost opportunity at Spring Hill is evaluated in great detail, and the truth of what happened there is finally shown based on evidence rather than conjecture. The intricate dynamics of the Confederate high command, and especially the roles of General John Bell Hood and General Frank Cheatham, are given special attention. For Cause & For Country is “a highly complex but skillfully organized, easy-to-follow campaign narrative written in stirring fashion” (Civil War Books and Authors).

Shiloh by Larry J. Daniel Pdf

The battle of Shiloh, fought in April 1862 in the wilderness of south central Tennessee, marked a savage turning point in the Civil War. In this masterful book, Larry Daniel re-creates the drama and the horror of the battle and discusses in authoritative detail the political and military policies that led to Shiloh, the personalities of those who formulated and executed the battle plans, the fateful misjudgments made on both sides, and the heroism of the small-unit leaders and ordinary soldiers who manned the battlefield.
