Handbook of Frogs and Toads of the United States and Canada by Albert Hazen Wright,Anna Allen Wright Pdf

The preeminent naturalists Albert Hazen Wright and Anna Allen Wright spent years assembling the wealth of material on frogs and toads appearing in this widely used handbook, the third edition of which was originally published in 1949. With abundant black-and-white photographs, colorful descriptions, journal notes from the field, and excerpts from the literature, their personalized natural history emphasizes amphibians observed in the wild. In a foreword to the 1995 paperback edition, Roy McDiarmid, a foremost specialist on frogs and toads, brings the book into historical perspective and supplies information to bring it up to date. Accounts of more than 100 species and subspecies cover such topics as common and scientific names, range, habitat, size, and general appearance, as well as color, structure, voice, and breeding. Separate keys are given for secondary sexual characteristics, eggs, tadpoles, families, and species. Generous quotations from the Wrights' field journals give the reader a sense of the problems and satisfactions of their work.

British Reptiles and Amphibians (Classic Reprint) by A. Nicol Simpson Pdf

Excerpt from British Reptiles and Amphibians This little volume, dealing with the British Reptiles and Amphibians, may well find a place in the Peeps at Nature Series. Britain has few representatives of these two classes of animals, but their fewness in number has enabled the author to deal with each species at some length; and, besides, we have the additional advantage of being able to illustrate all but two of the British species in colour. We are indebted to Miss Scrivener for the capabie way in which she has prepared the drawings from which the coloured plates have been prepared. The reader's attention is par ticularly directed to the series of photographic repro ductions on Plates III., VI., VII., X., and XL, which illustrate admirably the story of the development of the frog. Key to the Herpetofauna of the Continental United States and Canada by Robert Powell,Joseph T. Collins,Errol D. Hooper, Jr. Pdf

This profusely illustrated comprehensive key for identifying amphibians and reptiles from the continental United States and Canada incorporates a wealth of scientific findings. Since the first edition was published in 1998 and the second in 2012, the number of currently recognized species of native amphibians and reptiles in the area covered by this key has increased from 545 to 634 to 685, and the number of established non-native species has increased from 39 to 58 to 67. The increase in native taxa reflects the dynamic nature of modern systematics and the use of new (especially molecular) techniques to elucidate relationships and redefine species boundaries. The increase in non-native species reflects the porosity of the North American borders when it comes to controlling animal imports. The key is easy to use and illustrated with outstanding line drawings that show details of color patterns and structures used for identification. To accommodate the additional taxa, the number of line drawings in this third edition has increased from 257 to 279 to 295. In addition, nine maps illustrate the distributions of species that have been recognized since the publication of maps in the most recent editions of the Peterson Field Guides to the reptiles and amphibians of eastern, central, and western North America. A large number of annotations detail current taxonomic ambiguities or disagreements and the literature cited has been expanded. Collectively these features enhance opportunities to teach and learn the classification and identification of amphibians and reptiles in the continental United States and Canada.
