Handbook on Cerebral Venous Thrombosis by Valeria Caso,Giancarlo Agnelli,Maurizio Paciaroni Pdf

Cerebral veins contain about 70% of the total cerebral blood volume, but cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) occurs about a thousand times less often than arterial stroke. CVT affects mostly young adults and children, and in about one quarter of cases the cause remains unknown. Written by international experts, this publication is dealing with epidemiology, risk factors, coagulation disorders, clinical presentation - especially focusing on headache, current neuroradiological treatment, complications and long-term prognosis of CVT. The book covers the full spectrum of CVT pathogenesis and offers a new and effective approach to improve earlier diagnosis, recognize new risk factors and to identify the most severe manifestations, which require more aggressive treatments. Neurologists, interventional neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, and all physicians who are involved in the care of patients with CVT will welcome this publication as a useful and up-to-date clinical guide.

Cerebral Sinus Thrombosis by A. Baethmann,K. Einhäupl,O. Kempski Pdf

Contrary to the neurological manifestations of arterial cerebral blood flow disturbances, respective conditions resulting fram obstruction of the cerebro-venous system are far less well understood. Hence, cerebral sinus vein thrombosis (CSVT) ranks prominently among the group of neglected diseases of the brain. This might be attributable (a) to the diagnostic difficulties of the disorder and (b) to the fact that CSVT is associated with a host of heterogeneous neurological symptoms which often are not specific for the underlying venous flow disorder. Another complicating aspect is that CSVT is a consequence of other diseases as disparate as focal infection, trauma, neoplasia, or a thrombosis disposition caused by oral contraceptive use. Although progress has been made in establishing the correct diagnosis of the syndrome, many problems remain as the discussions contained within this volume vividly demonstrate. The same is true for the present understanding of the pathophysiological basis of the disease, eg, concerning the cerebro-venous circulation, the hemodynamic and neuropathological consequences in particular. Part of these deficits may be attributed to a scarcity of solid experimental data due to the limited availability of animal models. However, relevant experimental models are required for an in-depth analysis of the pathophysiological mechanisms, eg, causing brain tissue damage in relationship with the topographical distribution of the venous flow obstruction and, most importantly, for the testing of specific methods of treatment.

Bacterial Infections of the Central Nervous System by Karen L. Roos,Allan R. Tunkel Pdf

Bacterial Infections of the Central Nervous System aims to provide information useful to physicians taking care of patients with bacterial infections in the central nervous system (CNS), which can lead to morbidity and mortality. The increased number of patients suffering from this infection has led to the development of vaccines and antibiotics. Comprised of four chapters, the book explains the general approach to patients with bacterial CNS infection. It also discusses various CNS infection concepts and terms. These include the characteristic neuroimaging appearance of specific bacterial infections, the limitations of neuroimaging, the cerebrospinal fluid analysis, the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of bacterial CNS infections, the developments of specific adjunctive strategies, and the principles of antimicrobial therapy. It also includes discussions on various diseases that target the CNS, such as meningitis, focal CNS infections, neurological complications of endocarditis, suppurative venous sinus thrombosis, infections in the neurosurgical patient, and CNS diseases caused by selected infectious agents and toxins. This book will serve as a guide for clinical physicians who have patients suffering from bacterial CNS infection.
