Paper Stories – Paper and Book History in Early Modern Europe by Silvia Hufnagel,Þórunn Sigurðardóttir,Davíð Ólafsson Pdf

This peer-reviewed conference volume examines paper and material aspects of the written word in early modern Europe. The collection is designed around three thematic strands, based on the lifecycle of handwritten documents and manuscripts and printed books: first, production of paper, second production of books and manuscripts and third, trade and exchange, and ownership of manuscripts and books. By tracing the history of paper, books and collections through case studies of historically important objects, the authors identify agents and hotspots of production, trade and ownership from both centres and peripheries of Europe from the late Middle Ages until the beginning of industrialisation. They thereby address material aspects of documents, manuscripts and books, as well as object biography, from an interdisciplinary viewpoint. By doing so this volume provides insight into actual practices of the past and the material history of written texts.

Digital Watermarking Techniques in Curvelet and Ridgelet Domain by Channapragada Rama Seshagiri Rao,Munaga V.N.K. Prasad Pdf

This book describes the design, development, and testing of a novel digital watermarking technique for color images using Magic Square and Ridgelet transforms. The novel feature of the method is that it generates and uses multiple copies of the digital watermark. The book describes how the method was tested for embedding digital watermarks into color cover images, resulting in very high PSNR value and yielding comparable results with existing watermarking techniques. To reach this new method, eight different techniques are designed, developed and tested. First, the authors test two digital watermarking techniques based on encryption: Image Watermark Using Complete Complementary Code Technique (CCCT) and Image Watermarking Using CCC-Fast Walsh Hadamard Transform Technique (CCC-FWHTT). Next, four digital watermarking techniques based on curvelet transforms are discussed: Image Watermarking Using Curvelet Transform (WCT), Watermark Wavelets in Curvelets of Cover Image (WWCT), Resized Watermark into Curvelets of Cover Image (RWCT), and Resized Watermark Wavelets into Curvelets of Cover Image (RWWCT). Then, two final techniques are presented: Image Watermarking Based on Magic Square (MST) and Image watermarking based on Magic Square and Ridgelet Transform (MSRTT). Future research directions are explored in the final chapter.Designed for professionals and researchers in computer graphics and imaging, Digital Watermarking Techniques in Curvelet and Ridgelet Domain is also a useful tool for advanced-level students.

The Green Family of Papermakers and Hayle Mill by Maureen Green Pdf

In the nineteenth century, papermaking machines led to the closure of hundreds of handmade paper mills in the United Kingdom alone, but the Green family's Hayle Mill in Maidstone, Kent, is one English mill that defied all the odds and continued to produce paper by hand, sheet by sheet, until production ceased in 1987. Chronicling six generations of the Green family of papermakers, who faced bankruptcy, amongst other trials and tribulations, before making a success of their business, this book also covers the history of British papermaking, the growth of the industry in and around Maidstone, once referred to as the country's "Paper City," as well as nineteenth-century production materials and techniques. As that century drew to a close, a renewed interest in hand-crafted artifacts resulted in a growth in the market for artists papers made in the traditional manner. By the end of the First World War, the production of artists papers comprised 25% of Hayle Mill's business. Over the twentieth century, Hayle Mill steadily gained a reputation for its range of fine handmade papers for use by watercolorists, fine printers, calligraphers, and book and paper conservators.
