Metallurgy and lining.--All the processes of metallurgy and mining employ statical, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical engineering. Coal, without railways and canals, would be of little use, unless electrical engineering came to its aid. It was estimated by the late Lord Armstrong that of the 450.000.000 to 500,000,000 tons of coal annually produced in the world, one-third is used for steam production, one-third in metallurgical processes, and one-third for domestic consumption. Next in importance comes the production of iron and steel. Steel, on account of its great cost and brittleness, was only used for tools and special purposes until past the middle of the nineteenth century. This has been all changed by the invention of his steel by Bessemer in 1864, and open-hearth steel in the furnace of Siemens, perfected some twenty years since by Gilehrist & Thomas. The United States have taken the lead in steel manufacture. In 1873 Great Britain made three times as much steel as the United States. Now the United States makes twice as much as Great Britain, or 40 per cent, of all the steel made in the world. Mr. Carnegie has explained the reason why, in epigrammatic phrase: "Three Ibs. of steel billets can be sold for 2 cents." This stimulates rail and water traffic and other industries, as he tells us 1 Ib. of steel requires 2 Ibs. of ore, I1/, Ibs. of coal, and '/3 Ib. of limestone. It is not surprising, therefore, that the States bordering on the lakes bave created a trafile of 25,000,000 tons yearly through the Sault Ste. He went to Texas when that Territory was Webb, Samuel Blatchley, military struggling for independence (1838); was officer; born at Weathersfield, Conn., Dec. for several years connected with the Texan 15, 1753; father of the preceding and Rangers; returned to Kentucky, where he step-son of Silas Deane; was thanked for studied medicine; later entered Princeton his gallantry in the battle of Bunker Theological Seminary; and subsequently (Breed's) Hill, where he was wounded, settled in New York and engaged in and in June, 1776, was appointed aide-de-literary work. He contributed to The camp to Washington. In the battle of Vew World, The Democratic Review, and White Plains he was again wounded; also The Sunday Despatch; and was assoat Trenton. He was in the battle of ciate editor and joint proprietor of The Brandywine, and in 1778 raised and took Whig Review. In 1849 he attempted to command of the 3d Connecticut Regiment. lead an exploring and mining expedition, In 1779 he, with most of his men, were but failed; in 1855 went to Central Amercaptured by the British fleet while cross-ica, where he joined William Walker ing to Long Island with General Parsons, (q. .) in Nicaragua.
