Sea Hunters of Indonesia by Robert Harrison Barnes Pdf

Sea Hunters of Indonesia is a comprehensive study of the coastal community of Lamalera, whose traditional ways of life make it unique. One is an unusual kind of sea-fishing: the hunting of whales, porpoises, and giant manta rays. The other is the production, by the women of the community, of remarkable fine dyed textiles. Recently these traditions have come under intense pressure from external economic influences, and the people of Lamalera are starting to move into modern occupations. The community, famous for the beauty of its setting as well as for its crafts, is now a major tourist attraction, and it may now survive only as part of the tourist industry. At this crucial point in the history of the region, R. H. Barnes offers a richly detailed and beautifully illustrated picture of the culture and economy of Lamalera, the fruit of many years' study. He records all aspects of life in Lamalera, and places it in the broader context of past, present, and future of Indonesia as a whole.

Hunters, Predators and Prey by Frédéric Laugrand,Jarich Oosten† Pdf

Inuit hunting traditions are rich in perceptions, practices and stories relating to animals and human beings. The authors examine key figures such as the raven, an animal that has a central place in Inuit culture as a creator and a trickster, and qupirruit, a category consisting of insects and other small life forms. After these non-social and inedible animals, they discuss the dog, the companion of the hunter, and the fellow hunter, the bear, considered to resemble a human being. A discussion of the renewal of whale hunting accompanies the chapters about animals considered ‘prey par excellence’: the caribou, the seals and the whale, symbol of the whole. By giving precedence to Inuit categories such as ‘inua’ (owner) and ‘tarniq’ (shade) over European concepts such as ‘spirit ‘and ‘soul’, the book compares and contrasts human beings and animals to provide a better understanding of human-animal relationships in a hunting society.

Fox “I can't help but smile when I think about the Home Port. To me, it's the very best of Vineyard hospitality, serving up the perfect summer meal to satisfy everyone's taste. You'll have to provide your own sunset and the briny ocean scent that whets my appetite every time I head to Menemsha, but this book will welcome you to the Holthams' table and let you feast with them as we have done for many happy years.” --Linda Fairstein ** A Martha's Vineyard institution since 1931, the Home Port is the place to go locally for traditional New England–style, fresh-off-the-boat seafood. In this book, former chef/owner Will Holtham shares stories and culinary secrets from his forty years at the helm. Full-color food photos are complemented by restaurant ephemera from Will's private collection as well as charming watercolor illustrations by artist Susan Tobey White. Will Holtham has been a chef and restaurateur for more than forty years. He also owned the Square Rigger restaurant and legendary Bite Clam Shack, both on Martha's Vineyard. Heart-Warming Hymn Stories by Lindsay Terry Pdf

I have gleaned these stories from conversations with these wonderful songwriters, from friends who knew them and from periodicals and books of hymnology. Although this book is primarily a devotional volume, the contents can be used as sermon illustrations, Sunday school lesson illustrations or story backgrounds for youth or children's gatherings. Schoolteachers have often found them to be exciting to their students. - Preface.

Hector-Neri Castañeda by H. Tomberlin Pdf

The aim of this series is to inform both professional philosophers and a larger readership (of social and natural scientists, methodologists, mathematicians, students, teachers, publishers, etc.) about what is going on, who's who, and who does what in contemporary philosophy and PROFILES is designed to present the research activity and the logic. results of already outstanding personalities and schools and of newly emerging ones in the various fields of philosophy and logic. There are many Festschrift volumes dedicated to various philosophers. There is the celebrated Library of Living Philosophers edited by P. A. Schipp whose format influenced the present enterprise. Still they can only cover very little of the contemporary philosophical scene. Faced with a tremendous expansion of philosophical information and with an almost frightening division of labor and increasing specialization we need systematic and regular ways of keeping track of what happens in the profession. PROFILES is intended to perform such a function. Each volume is devoted to one or several philosophers whose views and results are presented and discussed. The profiled philosopher(s) will summarize and review his (their) own work in the main fields of significant contribution. This work will be discussed and evaluated by invited contributors. Relevant historical and/or biographical data, an up-to-date bibliography with short abstracts of the most important works and, whenever possible, references to significant reviews and discussion will also be included.

The Grey Undercurrent by Felix Schürmann Pdf

By extending their voyages to all oceans from the 1760s onward, whaling vessels from North America and Europe spanned a novel net of hunting grounds, maritime routes, supply posts, and transport chains across the globe. For obtaining provisions, cutting firewood, recruiting additional men, and transshipping whale products, these highly mobile hunters regularly frequented coastal places and islands along their routes, which were largely determined by the migratory movements of their prey. American-style pelagic whaling thus constituted a significant, though often overlooked factor in connecting people and places between distant world regions during the long nineteenth century. Focusing on Africa, this book investigates side-effects resulting from stopovers by whalers for littoral societies on the economic, social, political, and cultural level. For this purpose it draws on eight local case studies, four from Africa’s west coast and four from its east coast. In the overall picture, the book shows a broad range of effects and side-effects of different forms and strengths, which it figures as a "grey undercurrent" of global history.
