The Christ Literalist by Lou Meza Pdf

What did Christ say about war, peace and humanity? What did he say about politics and taxes? About life and death? Liberty and justice? What did he say about lust and greed? Family, marriage and divorce? The Christ Literalist is an attempt to consolidate His Word, i.e., at least, the words he actually spoke, into one volume. What is left, are the words of Christ for what they are, unadulterated, placed in their historical setting and contrasted by secular quotes from other notable historical and modern celebrities, revolutionaries, radical thinkers and misfits: 'Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue about that; I'm right and I will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now.' John Lennon, of The Beatles British Musician, 1940-1980 'In the secret of my knowledge there is no God but me." The Satanic Rituals Written By Anton LaVey, (1972) 'the time has come. It is quite clear our Antichrist is here. It is done." Marilyn Manson, Antichrist Superstar American Rock Artist, 1971- 'You're the Anti-Christ. You know that Stern?" Pig Vomit, in Private Parts Film Directed By Betty Thomas (1997) 'Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?" Jesus Christ Gospel of Matthew

Knowledge and Passion by Michelle Zimbalist Rosaldo Pdf

Michelle Rosaldo presents an ethnographic interpretation of the life of the Ilongots, a group of some 3,500 hunters and horticulturists in Northern Luzon, Philippines. Her study focuces on headhunting, a practice that remained active among the Ilongots until at least 1972. Indigenous notions of 'knowledge' and 'passion' are crucial to the Ilongots' perceptions of their own social practices of headhunting, oratory, marriage, and the organization of subsistence labour. In explaining the significance of these key ideas, Professor Rosaldo examines what she considers to be the most important dimensions of Ilongot social relationships: the contrasts between men and women and between accomplished married men and bachelor youths. By defining 'knowledge' and 'passion' in the context of their social and affective significance, the author demonstrates the place of headhunting in historical and political processes, and shows the relation between headhunting and indigenous concepts of curing, reproduction, and health. Theoretically oriented toward interpretive of symbolic ethnography, this book clarifies some of the ways in which the study of a language - both vocabulary and patterns of usage - is a study of a culture; the process of translation is presented as a method of cultural interpretation. Professor Rosaldo argues that an appreciation of the Ilongots' specific notions of 'the self' and the emotional concepts associated with headhunting can illuminate central aspects of the group's social life.

Victorian Poetry and the Culture of the Heart by Kirstie Blair Pdf

This study considers why and how the heart became a vital image in Victorian poetry. It argues that the intense focus on heart imagery in the period highlights anxieties about the ability of poetry to act upon its readers. It covers key poems by authors such as Tennyson and the Brownings, and contextualizes them with reference to lesser-known works.

The Heart Could Never Speak by George Pattison Pdf

The book offers an interpretation of a posthumously published poem by Edwin Muir (1887-1959), beginning The heart could never speak / But that the Word was spoken. The poem is read as summing up Muir's lifelong struggle with fundamental questions about the meaning of existence, questions often developed in dialogue with such figures as Nietzsche, Hslderlin, and Kafka. These references allow us to bring Muir into conversation with modern existentialist philosophy and theology, and Muir's poetic thought is seen as both illuminating and as illuminated by such existentialist thinkers as Heidegger, Bultmann, Kierkegaard, and Berdyaev. Themes such as death, time, love, the nature of language, and the alienation brought about by technological mass society, and the threat of nuclear catastrophe are central to the poem's subject-matter and are dealt with by Muir in such a way as to make possible a Christian version of existentialist thought. The perennial nature of such questions in modern society makes the poem as relevant to contemporary issues in religious thought today as when it was written. For all its simplicity, it is the argument of the book that it makes an abiding contribution to human self-understanding.
