Haunted Harvest by Richard Anderson Pdf

A short, but delightful Halloween poem book. All ages will surely enjoy these scary atmospheric poems and the spooky artwork throughout. From a haunting encounter with a ghostly visage in 'Old Woman' to enchanting childhood recollections in 'Autumn Memories', this charming and eerie collection of poems that celebrates the Halloween season will become a perennial favorite for this other festive time of year. From The Introduction: The fall season has always been a special time of year for me. I carry wonderful memories of Halloween from my childhood in Ohio and of my mother relating the most amazing ghost stories to our family. Our house would be decorated for the season and she would begin her story-telling which truly brought out the magic for me and my siblings. I have to give her full credit for my love of this glorious time of year. As the years went by I never lost my passion for the fall season and Halloween. If anything, my appreciation of it increased over the years. I would always find as much time as possible, starting in late September, to begin enjoying the fall season as it made its way towards Halloween. In the late 80's I started collecting some of the books that meant so much to me as a child. Helen Hokes' "Witches, Witches, Witches" and "Spooks, Spooks, Spooks" as well as Wilhelmina Harper's "Ghosts and Goblins". These books left an indelible impression on me and I would check them out from the local library every Halloween when I was a kid. It was a tradition that I never forgot! Even though they have been out of print for years, I think you can still find them on eBay now and again. Years passed and I felt I the need to write my own Halloween book. I began writing Halloween poems in the late nineties and would share them with family members at our annual Halloween parties. It seemed I had a natural affinity for this form of poetry and would find that the work would flow easily, especially during the fall season. After several years I had enough to start assembling this book but I didn't want to publish it until I had illustrations to accompany the poems. I felt I needed to do my own art and illustrations for this book. I loved those old Halloween books from my childhood that had great poems and stories with amazing illustrations. I would gaze at those old etchings and ink drawings over and over again as I read the poems and stories. The combination had an enchanting effect on me and added to all the Halloween magic in my life. I admired the simple black and white images because they were spookier and more powerful as Halloween illustrations. Maybe the publishers found it was much cheaper and a less risky venture to publish this way. whatever was the motivation for the mono color illustrations, I'm glad for their decision. And this was the direction I wanted to go with my little book. But as often happens, years went by and finding time to work on completing this project was hard to come by, but it was always in the back of my mind. So luckily in 2013 a space opened up in my schedule and I was able to carefully create the artwork and put the book together. My aim with these poems was to create an old-fashioned, eerie feeling for the reader. Some do, and others have a more contemporary flair still in keeping with this magical time of year. This book isn't just for children, but for anyone who has a true love of Halloween and the wonderful changes this season brings. I wanted to write a book with poems similar to the ones that meant so much to me when I was a boy, a mix of poetry reminiscent of my childhood favorites along with those that would appeal to devotees of all ages. I hope you're as happy with the result as I am. Enjoy and Happy Halloween! Richard Anderson 2013

Haunted Air by Ossian Brown Pdf

The roots of Hallowe'en lie in the ancient pre-Christian Celtic festival of Samhain, a feast to mark the death of the old year and the birth of the new. It was believed that on this night the veil separating the worlds of the living and the dead grew thin and ruptured, allowing spirits to pass through and walk unseen but not unheard amongst men. The advent of Christianity saw the pagan festival subsumed in All Souls' Day, when across Europe the dead were mourned and venerated. Children and the poor, often masked or in outlandish costume, wandered the night begging 'soul cakes' in exchange for prayers, and fires burned to keep malevolent phantoms at bay. From Europe, the haunted tradition would quickly take root and flourish in the fertile soil of the New World. Feeding hungrily on fresh lore, consuming half-remembered tales of its own shadowy origins and rituals, Hallowe'en was reborn in America. The pumpkin supplanted the carved turnip; costumes grew ever stranger, and celebrants both rural and urban seized gleefully on the festival's intoxicating, lawless spirit. For one wild night, the dead stared into the faces of the living and the living, ghoulishly masked and clad in tattered backwoods baroque, stared back. The photographs in Haunted Air provide an extraordinary glimpse into the traditions of this macabre festival from ages past, and form an important document of photographic history. These are the pictures of the dead: family portraits, mementos of the treasured, now unrecognisable, other. Torn from album pages, sold piecemeal for pennies and scattered, abandoned to melancholy chance and the hands of strangers.

Moonlight Harvest by Edward Lodi Pdf

The ghosts, phantoms, and ¿long-leggéd beasties¿ who haunt the cranberry bogs of Cape Cod and Plymouth County are best seen by moonlight¿though there are some folks who say that such things are best never seen at all. Even so, there can¿t be any harm in peeking, can there? Can there? Ask the boy named Christopher, who in broad daylight peeked inside the old Thompson screenhouse¿or the girl named Myra from Duxbury, who, alone at night, peeked into the shallow ditch that runs along the edge of the bog behind her house¿nothing bad happened to either of them, did it? Nothing too bad¿ Moonlight Harvest gathers together seventeen of Edward Lodi¿s best ghost stories¿including ¿Joe Baker Stops By,¿ first-prize winner in the ¿Strange Occurrences¿ contest sponsored by Prime Time Cape Cod. All seventeen are set on the cranberry bogs of southeastern Massachusetts; all are fraught with mystery, suspense, and nameless terror. Two of the stories have never before been published; a third appeared recently in the journal All Hallows but has never been collected in book form. A number of the stories appeared in Haunters of the Dusk and Murder on the Bogs, rare out-of-print collections that are highly sought after. Some of the tales in Moonlight Harvest are true or firmly based on legends. Others, though fictional, were inspired by actual cranberry bogs and events that happened there. All will make you think twice before setting out at dusk on that nature walk; or strolling across that dike near the reservoir; or skating on that quaint bog flooded for the winter. You never know: you might encounter Joe Baker¿or the creature named Flume Child¿or something far, far worse.

The Cinema of Eric Rohmer by Jacob Leigh Pdf

Since the death of the French film director Eric Rohmer in 2010, interest in his work has reignited. Known as the last of the established directors in the French New Wave, Rohmer took complete control over all his films, acting as his own producer throughout his career, and writing the scripts. He also made his mark by taking the lead in casting and location scouting - as French seaside resorts with beautiful young people are some of the elements present in most of his films. Combining history and criticism, Jacob Leigh pens the first chronological survey of this understudied filmmaker in order to give readers clear insights into how Rohmer's films came about and what he intended them to be. The book provides in-depth analysis of the themes and ideas of Rohmer's twenty-three feature films, and illustrates the complexity of their cinematic style. Leigh's study is the perfect introduction to the work of this great filmmaker, for both students and the general reader.

Haunted by Dorah L. Williams Pdf

It was an irrational decision. Despite having just moved into a beautiful new house, the Williams family gave in to an odd, overwhelming desire to purchase and move into a Victorian home they had come upon by chance. They were curious, of course, as to why the house had, in the past, had such a high vacancy rate - no one ever seemed to live in it for a long period of time. But that curiosity didn’t last long, because shortly after moving in, strange things began to happen. It became abundantly clear that the home’s past owners had all had a reason for leaving: fear. The Williams’ new home was haunted. At first, the family tried telling themselves there were logical explanations for the strange things they all were witnessing. But before long they came to accept the fact that they were sharing their home with ghosts. Haunted is the Williams family’s story from the point of view of the mother, Dorah. Through her chilling reminiscences, we witness the all-too-real goings-on in the house. And we join the family as they seek a way to bring an end to the paranormal events that were occurring with ever more frequency and intensity, and learn why the events began in the first place.
