Your Better Self Study Manual by Ken Wallace Pdf

This Manual is designed to be used as a compliment to and in conjunction with my book, Your Better Self: A Simple Guide to Where You Want to Be. It can most certainly be read by itself as a proper book in its own right. However, there are allusions and references to content in the book such that some of the content of this Manual might appear incomplete. The purpose of the book is to offer scenarios and stories slices of real life so that readers can self-identify the specific areas of life they need to work on so they can increase their motivation and energy to straightforwardly manifest their worthy aspirations and more quickly become their better Selves. The purpose of this Manual is to be a companion to the book, offering additional content, stories, resources, tools and exercises to help readers delve more deeply into those areas of opportunity to improve themselves. Taken together, the book and this Manual provide all that is needed to begin to more rapidly and easily become your better Self and get what you really want in your life. When you read a chapter in the book that beckons you to explore that particular theme of life at a deeper level, pick up this Manual and go to that same chapter (the Manual has the same chapter names and sequence as the book) and read the additional content. More importantly, be sure to do the exercises as these will help you get clearer on the specific and unique ways YOU can become YOUR better Self.

Our Better Nature by Philip J. Dreyfus Pdf

Few cities are so dramatically identified with their environment as San Francisco—the landscape of hills, the expansive bay, the engulfing fog, and even the deadly fault line shifting below. Yet most residents think of the city itself as separate from the natural environment on which it depends. In Our Better Nature, Philip J. Dreyfus recounts the history of San Francisco from Indian village to world-class metropolis, focusing on the interactions between the city and the land and on the generations of people who have transformed them both. Dreyfus examines the ways that San Franciscans remade the landscape to fit their needs, and how their actions reflected and affected their ideas about nature, from the destruction of wetlands and forests to the creation of Golden Gate and Yosemite parks, the Sierra Club, and later, the birth of the modern environmental movement. Today, many San Franciscans seek to strengthen the ties between cities and nature by pursuing more sustainable and ecologically responsible ways of life. Consistent with that urge, Our Better Nature not only explores San Francisco’s past but also poses critical questions about its future. Dreyfus asks us to reassess our connection to the environment and to find ways to redefine ourselves and our cities within nature. Only with such an attitude will San Francisco retain the magic that has always charmed residents and visitors alike.

The Gadamerian Mind by Theodore George,Gert-Jan van der Heiden Pdf

Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900–2002) is one of the most important philosophers of the post-1945 era. His name has become all but synonymous with the philosophical study of hermeneutics, the field concerned with theories of understanding and interpretation and laid out in his landmark book Truth and Method. Influential not only within continental philosophy, Gadamer’s thought has also made significant contributions to related fields such as religion, literary theory, and education. The Gadamerian Mind is a major survey of the fundamental aspects of Gadamer’s thought, with contributions from leading scholars of Gadamer and hermeneutics from around the world. 38 chapters are divided into six clear parts: Overviews Key concepts Historical influences Contemporary encounters Beyond philosophy Legacies and questions. Although Gadamer’s work addresses a remarkable range of topics, careful consideration is given throughout the volume to consistent concerns that orient his thought. Important in this respect is his relation to philosophers in the Western tradition, from Plato to Heidegger. An indispensable resource for anyone studying and researching Gadamer, hermeneutics, and the history of twentieth-century philosophy, The Gadamerian Mind will also be of interest to those in related disciplines such as religion, literature, political theory, and education.

Our Better Nature by Darrell W. McNabb Pdf

This work is a collection of five short stories, which were inspired by the many selfless, random acts of kindness and caring, which were extended to others by simple, everyday people in ordinary places, and the positive and profound effect those deeds had on their lives. The book highlights that higher nature of humanity, "our better nature," which we all aspire to, and it is the author's intention to raise these unsung heroes out of obscurity and present them in the light of their overwhelming generosity. These are uplifting stories about life, love, faith and family; about compassion and caring, sorrow and joy; about loss and tragedy; about unfortunate endings and hopeful new beginnings. They are masterfully told in the backdrop of the Christmas season, charged with elements of magic and wonder, revealing fascinating twists and turns. These tales, while fanciful, are true, and save for a touch of color, they are delivered to the reader exactly the way they happened. Alas, those who play out their parts in these pages will know the truth of it. As these tales were given to the author, so he gives them to you and your family. It is the author's expressed wish that you are richly entertained and that these stories may serve to elevate and inspire.

Uncovering and Discovering the Key to Spiritual Growth by Rich Kae Pdf

Written mostly in prose, "Uncovering and Discovering the KEY to Spiritual Growth" is sprinkled with some beautiful and transforming original poetry. It is a fascinating story of one man''s attempt to make sense out of a world turned upside down. In the midst of personal disaster, Rich Kae asked, "How do you find meaning in a world where all the givens are gone?" He started looking for the key or answer to this question by addressing the only thing he knew for certain -HIS PAIN! One chapter in the book entitled, "Pain is your Friend" reveals how being honest with and accepting his pain helped him to discover a new foundation upon which he could start to rebuild his life "one day at a time." The Book reflects the Author''s broad experience and education in the fields of psychology, religion, philosophy and the sciences. Many readers responded positively after having read the pre-publication manuscript. One such response by Rev. Donald Tastad reads, "One cannot read it without asking the most basic and important questions in life. One finds ample answers to those questions and of more importance, a way of life that leads to fulfillment and meaning."

Consciousness and Self-Knowledge in Medieval Philosophy by Gyula Klima Pdf

Contemporary introductions to the theme of self-knowledge too often trace its emergence in the history of philosophy to thinkers such as René Descartes and David Hume. Whereas Descartes conceives of self-knowledge as intimate and first-personal, Hume contends that it is limited to our awareness of our impressions and ideas. In point of fact, self-knowledge is a perennial theme. We may, for instance, trace the lineage of Hume and Descartes on these matters to Aristotle and Plato, respectively. This volume studies philosophical treatments of self-knowledge in the Medieval Latin West. It comprises two sets of papers; the first is taken from an author-meets-critics session on Therese Scarpelli-Cory’s Aquinas on Human Self Knowledge, which advances the thesis that Aquinas’s theory of self-knowledge wherein the intellect grasps itself in its activity bridges the divide between mediated and first-personal self-knowledge. The second set of papers discuss self-knowledge in terms of self-fulfilment. Authors look to Aquinas’s account of how we can know when we have acquired the virtues necessary for human happiness, as well as the medieval traditions of mysticism and theology, which offer accounts of transformative self-knowledge, the fulfilment that this brings to our emotional and physical selves, and the authority to teach and counsel about what this awareness confers.

Predator by Ander Monson Pdf

A searching memoir of a life lived in the flicker of an action film, by the author of I Will Take the Answer In his first memoir, Ander Monson guides readers through a scene-by-scene exploration of the 1987 film Predator, which he has watched 146 times. Some fighters might not have time to bleed, but Monson has the patience to consider their adventure, one frame at a time. He turns his obsession into a lens through which he poignantly examines his own life, formed by mainstream, white, male American culture. Between scenes, Monson delves deeply into his adolescence in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Riyadh, his role as a father and the loss of his own mother, and his friendships with men bound by the troubled camaraderie depicted in action and sci-fi blockbusters. Along with excursions into the conflicted pleasures of cosplay and first-person shooters, he imagines himself beside the poet and memoirist Paul Monette, who wrote the novelization of the movie while his partner was dying of AIDS. A sincere and playful book that lovingly dissects the film, Predator also offers questions and critiques of masculinity, fandom, and their interrelation with acts of mass violence. In a stirring reversal, one chapter exposes Monson through the Predator’s heat-seeking vision, asking him, “What do you know about the workings of the hidden world?” As Monson brings us into the brilliant depths of the film and its universe, the hunt begins.

Our Selfish Tax Laws by Anthony C. Infanti Pdf

Why tax law is not just a pocketbook issue but a reflection of what and whom we, as a society, value. Most of us think of tax as a pocketbook issue: how much we owe, how much we'll get back, how much we can deduct. In Our Selfish Tax Laws, Anthony Infanti takes a broader view, considering not just how taxes affect us individually but how the tax system reflects our culture and society. He finds that American tax laws validate and benefit those who already possess power and privilege while starkly reflecting the lines of difference and discrimination in American society based on race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity, immigration status, and disability. Infanti argues that instead of focusing our tax reform discussions on which loopholes to close or which deductions to allow, we should consider how to make our tax system reflect American ideals of inclusivity rather than institutionalizing exclusion. After describing the theoretical and intellectual underpinnings of his argument, Infanti offers two comparative case studies, examining the treatment of housing tax expenditures and the unit of taxation in the United States, Canada, France, and Spain to show how tax law reflects its social and cultural context. Then, drawing on his own work and that of other critical tax scholars, Infanti explains how the discourse surrounding tax reform masks the many ways that the American tax system rewards and reifies privilege. To counter this, Infanti urges us to work together to create a society with a tax system that respects and values all Americans.
