Hawaiki the Original Home of the Maori; With a Sketch of Polynesian History by S. Percy Smith Pdf

Excerpt from Hawaiki the Original Home of the Maori; With a Sketch of Polynesian History This work was first published in the "Journal of the Polynesian Society," Vols. VII. and VIII., and subsequently issued in book form. It has now been largely re-written, and the whole rearranged in such a manner as to form a sketch of the History of the Polynesian race - particularly the Maori-Rarotongan branch - down to the separation of the New Zealand Maoris from the original stock, when they migrated from Eastern Polynesia to New Zealand. The work is treated from the point of view of the Traditions, and mainly from those of Rarotonga, a written copy of which was secured by the author in Rarotonga in 1897. These traditions were dictated by Te Ariki tara-are, the last of the high priests of Rarotonga, and therefore are from the highest authority possible. A few of the Traditions themselves have been published - both in the native language and in English - in the above-named journal, but the bulk of them remain as yet untranslated. Ko te Whenua te Utu / Land is the Price by M P K Sorrenson Pdf

For more than half a century, Keith Sorrenson – one of New Zealand’s leading historians and himself of mixed Maori and Pakeha descent – has dived deeper than anyone into the story of two peoples in New Zealand. In this new book, Sorrenson brings together his major writing from the last 56 years into a powerful whole – covering topics from the origins of Maori (and Pakeha ideas about those origins), through land purchases and the King Movement of the nineteenth century, and on to twentieth-century politics and the new history of the Waitangi Tribunal. Throughout his career, Sorrenson has been concerned with the international context for New Zealand history while also attempting to understand and explain Maori conceptions and Pakeha ideas from the inside. And he has been determined to tell the real story of Maori losses of land and their political responses as, in the face of Pakeha colonisation, they became a minority in their own country. Ko te Whenua te Utu / Land is the Price is a powerful history of Maori and Pakeha in New Zealand.

Hawaiki the Original Home of the Maori; With a Sketch of Polynesian History (Classic Reprint) by S. Percy Smith Pdf

Excerpt from Hawaiki the Original Home of the Maori; With a Sketch of Polynesian History The writer is fully aware that his theory as to the origin of the Polynesian race from India as expressed in this work is weak, through want of access to works on early India. But a friend of the writer's has accumulated a vast amount of valuable information bearing on the question from the Indian standpoint, which strongly confirms the theory herein suggested, and which information win. It is hoped, shortly be published. In this third edition the generations are counted back from the year 1900, not 1850 as in the previous issues.
