Health Lectures for the People (Classic Reprint) by Edinburgh Health Society Pdf

Excerpt from Health Lectures for the People The third work done has been to consider and dis cuss many important questions in connection with health and sanitation. In regard to some of these questions, it was decided that it was better not to interfere, and in regard to others, information is still being sought; The Committee wish it to be understood, that the Object Of the Health Society is not to come into collision with the authorities, but rather to co-operate with them. It does not-wish to embarrass or to force legislation; neither do its members wish to make themselves disagreeable in any way. All they want to do, is to educate the public to observe and work for themselves; and the Committee hope, that in time, it will not be necessary for the Society to go to the Public, but that the Public will come to the Society and ask them to assist them in connection with many important health matters. Lectures on Public Health by E. D. Mapother Pdf

Excerpt from Lectures on Public Health: Delivered at the Royal College of Surgeons IN publishing the first course of these Lectures, I was obliged to excuse many shortcomings by ac knowledging that they had been hurriedly prepared. I must now put in a similar plea, for just as I had begun to prepare for press last November, I was called on to take temporary charge of the Chair of Physiology; and although chemistry and the micro Scope afforded the principal sources of instruction for this subject as well as Hygiene, additional time was needed for the arrangement of appliances. However, as some interest would attach to an account of the Cholera Outbreak, and to Sanitary Statistics in view of improved legislation during the approaching Session, I was unwilling to postpone publication to a time of greater leisure. Health in the House by Catherine M. Buckton Pdf

Excerpt from Health in the House: Twenty Lectures on Elementary Physiology in Its Application to the Daily Wants of Man and Animals, Delivered to the Wives and Children of Working-Men in Leeds and Saltaire IT is now six months since this little book was first issued, an in that time it has attained a success beyond my most sanguine expectations. In preparing this new edition I have availed myself of the criticisms sent me by several of the scientific men whose books I studied, and I have also benefited by reading the numerous reviews which have appeared. I am glad to be permitted to mention that Mr. Marshall, who kindly gave me his advice during the revision of the original manuscript, has rendered me still further indebted to him by carefully reading through the book for the purpose of this edition; and by these means it has, I hope, been much improved. The present edition is published in a cheaper form, in accordance with numerous suggestions which have been made to me for extending its influence. I hope that my Lectures will, therefore, now come within the reach of those for whom they were originally written. hawrah by L.S.S. O'Malley Pdf

Excerpt from Howrah The deep channel alternates from left to right and vice cersa according to the windings of the river, except where deflected by the large tributaries which debouch into it at the southern limit of this district. Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. At Rajganj, Opposite Hangman Point, it crosses over to the Howrah Side, and follows the Sankrail Reach as far as Melancholy (menikhali) Point. It then zigzags from left to right at each bend. Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive (Classic Reprint) by German Woodhead Pdf

Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
