Hearts of Smoke and Steam by Andrew Mayer Pdf

Superheroes and steampunk come together in 19th century New York. Sir Dennis Darby has been murdered, the Automaton has been destroyed, and Sarah Stanton has turned her back on a life of privilege and comfort to try and find her way in the unforgiving streets of New York. But Lord Eschaton, the villain behind all these events, isn't finished with her yet. His plans to bring his apocalyptic vision of the future to the world are moving forward, but to complete his scheme he needs the clockwork heart that Sarah still holds. But she has her own plans for the Automaton's clockwork heart--Sarah is trying to rebuild her mechanical friend, and when she is attacked by the Children of Eschaton, the man who comes to her rescue may be the one to make her dreams come true. Emelio Armando is a genius inventor who had hoped to leave his troubles behind when he and his sister left Italy for a life of anonymity in the New World. Now he finds himself falling in love with the fallen society girl, but he is rapidly discovering just how powerful the forces of villainy aligned against her are, and that fulfilling her desires means opening the door to a world of danger that could destroy everything he has built. The Society of Steam takes place in a Victorian New York powered by the discovery of Fortified Steam, a substance that allows ordinary men to wield extraordinary abilities and grants powers that can corrupt gentlemen of great moral strength. The secret behind this amazing substance is something that wicked brutes will gladly kill for, and one that Sarah must try and protect, no matter what the cost. From the Trade Paperback edition.

The Heart of the Antarctic, Volume 2. by E. H. Shackleton Pdf

This is a historical account that details Shackleton's expedition, written on the passage by ocean liner from New Zealand to Britain. The expedition was led by Ernest H. Shackleton, who set sail from Port Lyttelton, New Zealand, on January 1, 1908. Shackleton and a party of 14 men were dropped off at Cape Royds on Ross Island on February 3. The men were split into three groups. One would attempt to reach the South Pole, another would travel north to the South Magnetic Pole, and a third would explore the mountains west of McMurdo Sound. On October 29, Shackleton, three companions, and four ponies set out for the South Pole. Despite the great difficulty, they reached a latitude of 88°23' S. on January 9, 1909, further south than any prior expedition. They were compelled to turn back due to fierce blizzards and a shortage of supplies. They returned to the Nimrod and arrived in New Zealand safely. In addition to getting within 97.5 nautical miles (180.6 kilometers) of the pole, the expedition accomplished two other noteworthy feats. Douglas Mawson, Edgeworth David, and Alistair Mackay led the first ascent of Mount Erebus, Antarctica's most active volcano, on March 5-11, 1908, and the same three men reached the South Magnetic Pole on January 16, 1909.

Youth - Heart of Darkness - The End of the Tether by Joseph Conrad Pdf

This vintage book contains three short stories written by Joseph Conrad. These stories do not share the same narrative, but do share a theme: the stages of life. 'Youth' focuses on a young man’s first sea-voyage to the East; 'Heart of Darkness' concerns a particularly unenlightened maturity; and 'The end of the Tether' deals with the old age of an ex-military man. Conrad's masterful writing has influenced many important twentieth-century writers and artists, including T. S. Eliot, Jorge Luis Borges, and Werner Herzog. This text is highly recommended for fans of Conrad’s seminal work, and it would make for a worthy addition to any collection. This antiquarian volume is being republished now in an affordable, modern edition - complete with a specially commissioned biography of the author.

Heart of Darkness and Other Stories by Joseph Conrad Pdf

Heart of Darkness is a short and vividly brutal account of colonial enterprise that has as much in common with the jaded Evelyn Waugh of Black Mischief as it does with any of Conrad's direct contemporaries in the late nineteenth century. It is accompanied in this volume by the tales with which it has been published since 1902, the autobiographical short story "Youth," and the less personal but more substantial tale of an old man's fall from fortune, "The End of the Tether." Though these stories differ considerably in style and content from his later novels, much of his reputation rests upon the words contained in this volume.
