Hedge Fund Strategies - a Critical Review by Frederic Gros Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,7, European Business School - International University Schlo Reichartshausen Oestrich-Winkel, 36 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Introduction Problem and objectives Historically, there have been two competing investment theories. On the one hand there is the traditional efficient markets theory, which states that share prices fully reflect market information and therefore only temporary mispricing occurs. The traditional investments to buy and hold equity and bonds, which benefit principally from market direction is based on this theory. On the other hand the second theory argues that greater inefficiencies occur, and therefore opportunities can arise that enable investors to exploit mispriced securities without facing excessive levels of risk. This is the principal argument behind hedge fund investing. In the Oxford dictionary, the term "hedge" is described as a way of protecting yourself against a loss, especially money. To achieve this goal, hedge funds use a wide range of different investment strategies. These strategies are partly very complex and therefore sometimes very difficult to comprehend for the investor. This fact contributes mainly to the negative image of hedge funds in the general public. But the truth is that as hedge funds exploit chances of winning which result from market imperfections, they actually support and improve the stability of the financial systems. The hedge fund industry experienced a very strong growth in the last two decades and represents a good alternative investment opportunity to traditional asset classes. This knowledge is needed as some specialists already expect that traditional mutual funds may not be able to avoid adopting respectively integrating s

Hedge Funds by H. Kent Baker,Greg Filbeck Pdf

Hedge Funds: Structure, Strategies, and Performance provides a synthesis of the theoretical and empirical literature on this intriguing, complex, and frequently misunderstood topic. The book dispels some common misconceptions of hedge funds, showing that they are not a monolithic asset class but pursue highly diverse strategies. Furthermore, not all hedge funds are unusually risky, excessively leveraged, invest only in illiquid asses, attempt to profit from short-term market movements, or only benefit hedge fund managers due to their high fees. Among the core issues addressed are how hedge funds are structured and how they work, hedge fund strategies, leading issues in this investment, and the latest trends and developments. The authors examine hedge funds from a range of perspectives, and from the theoretical to the practical. The book explores the background, organization, and economics of hedge funds, as well as their structure. A key part is the diverse investment strategies hedge funds follow, for example some are activists, others focusing on relative value, and all have views on managing risk. The book examines various ways to evaluate hedge fund performance, and enhances understanding of their regulatory environment. The extensive and engaging examination of these issues help the reader understands the important issues and trends facing hedge funds, as well as their future prospects.

Hedge Fund Analysis by Frank J. Travers Pdf

A detailed, step-by-step book covering the entire hedge fund evaluation process Investing in hedge funds is different from investing in other asset classes. There is much less publicly available information about hedge funds performance than there is about mutual funds or individual stocks. Consequently, investing in this class requires more sophisticated investment knowledge, greater due diligence, and, in many cases, a better-developed ability to evaluate investment managers. Hedge Fund Analysis provides a broad framework of how to approach this endeavor, from initial screening to analytical techniques, interviewing skills, and legal and contract negotiations. Along the way, it demonstrates a variety of mechanisms for monitoring and tracking hedge funds and the underlying hedge fund portfolios—explaining each stage of the process in minute detail and providing specific examples which fully explain the opportunities and challenges you'll face each step of the way. Provides a detailed look at how to source hedge funds, screen through them, and rank their strengths and weaknesses Lays out a thorough process for evaluating funds, from initial interviews to performance analysis to onsite meetings Reveals what questions to ask by strategy in order to understand the underlying risk factors associated with each Highlights non-investment analysis, including operational due diligence and risk management, as integral elements in the process Written by a financial professional with over twenty years of experience conducting investment manager due diligence, this book will put you in a position to make more informed decisions when investing in hedge funds.
