Low latitude observations of VLF/LF pulse reflections from the lower ionosphere obtained at nine locations to the east and west of a transmitter in southeastern Brazil are described. The data provide a variety of information on the reflection properties of the ionosphere below about 90 km altitude. Aspects of the data are presented in quasi-dimensional formats useful for identifying ionosphere structure and variability, and detailed analyses of portions of the data provided, which characterize the effective heights of the reflection coefficients of the ionosphere at noon and midnight, over a frequency range from 15 to 65 kHz. Shock Wave Reflection Phenomena by Gabi Ben-Dor Pdf

The phenomenon of shock wave reflection was first reported by the distinguished philosopher Ernst Mach in 1878. Its study was then abandoned for a period of about 60 years until its investigation was initiated in the early 1940s by Professor John von Neumann and Professor Bleakney. Under their supervision, 15 years of intensive research related to various aspects of the reflection of shock waves in pseudo-steady flows were carried out. It was during this period that the four basic shock wave reflection configurations were discovered. Then, for a period of about 10 years from the mid 1950s until the mid 1960s, investigation of the reflection phenomenon of shock waves was kept on a low flame all over the world (e. g. Australia, Japan, Canada, U. S. A. , U. S. S. R. , etc. ) until Professor Bazhenova from the U. S. S. R. , Professor Irvine Glass from Canada, and Professor Roy Henderson from Australia re initiated the study of this and related phenomena. Under their scientific supervision and leadership, numerous findings related to this phenomenon were reported. Probably the most productive research group in the mid 1970s was that led by Professor Irvine Glass in the Institute of Aerospace Studies of the University of Toronto. In 1978, exactly 100 years after Ernst Mach first reported his discovery of the reflection phenomenon, I published my Ph. D. thesis in which, for the first time, analytical transition criteria between the various shock wave reflection configurations were established.

In this thesis, acoustic measurement techniques related to the absorbing as well as the scattering properties of architectural surfaces are investigated. The research is divided into two parts: the first part consists of determining the most relevant causes of uncertainty for the standardized measurement methods of random-incidence absorption and scattering coefficients. A method is developed to determine the necessary minimum number of source-receiver combinations in the reverberation chamber to ensure a specified precision of the absorption or scattering coefficient. The second part of the thesis focuses on a hemispherical microphone array and signal processing steps related to the measurement of angle-dependent reflection properties. Measurements show that the array setup can be used to obtain the angle-dependent absorbing properties of samples with few source positions. With the help of array signal processing methods, the setup can also be used to determine the directional diffusion and scattering coefficient of small samples, yielding the same result as established far-field methods.

A Method for Reducing Ground Reflection Effects from Acoustic Measurements by Jere A. Noerager Pdf

The method involved placing foam blocks on the ground between sound source and receiver in an approximation of the wedges in an anechoic chamber. The tests were performed out of doors as a function of the receiver height and source-receiver separation distance. The spacing between blocks and the extent of ground covered were varied to estimate the optimum placement and minimum amount of foam treatment needed. Base-line tests without foam were also performed. It was found that the foam treatment reduced the amplitude of the peaks and valleys in the sound pressure spectra substantially. The foam was least effective at low frequency, especially for the low receiver height and for large source-receiver distances. Results from the base-line tests were compared with theoretically predicted results. These base-line test results were in reasonable agreement with those from theory.
