Women in Mark's Gospel by Susan Miller Pdf

"[This] is a timely topic, one that has not yet been dealt with. Miller writes clearly and competently. The first chapter sets out her method, which draws from both literary critical and feminist work. She then treats the women of Mark's Gospel in sequence. Her work will provide a helpful supplement to the standard commentaries. It will also be useful in women's studies classes, and provides a nice example of a balanced feminist interpretation of the Gospels." -Dr. Alan Culpepper, Mercer University, Atlanta. Miller examines the accounts of women in Mark's gospel and interprets them in relation to Mark's definition of discipleship and his understanding of new creation.

Women in Scripture by Carol Meyers,Toni Craven,Ross S. Kraemer Pdf

“This splendid reference describes every woman in Jewish and Christian scripture . . . monumental” (Library Journal). In recent decades, many biblical scholars have studied the holy text with a new focus on gender. Women in Scripture is a groundbreaking work that provides Jews, Christians, or anyone fascinated by a body of literature that has exerted a singular influence on Western civilization a thorough look at every woman and group of women mentioned in the Bible, whether named or unnamed, well known or heretofore not known at all. They are remarkably varied—from prophets to prostitutes, military heroines to musicians, deacons to dancers, widows to wet nurses, rulers to slaves. There are familiar faces, such as Eve, Judith, and Mary, seen anew with the full benefit of the most up-to-date results of biblical scholarship. But the most innovative aspect of this book is the section devoted to the many females who in the scriptures do not even have names. Combining rigorous research with engaging prose, these articles on women in the Hebrew Bible, the Apocryphal/Deuterocanonical Books, and the New Testament will inform, delight, and challenge readers interested in the Bible, scholars and laypeople alike. Together, these collected histories create a volume that takes the study of women in the Bible to a new level.

Hérodias by Gustave Flaubert Pdf

Written by the great French author Gustave Flaubert, ‘Hérodias’ is the third and final tale from the short story collection, ‘Three Tales’ (1877) and is a memorable retelling of the biblical story of Saint John the Baptist. After her divorce from John's half-brother, Herodias marries Herod, but John claims their marriage is against Mosaic Law. During a lavish birthday celebration for Herod, Herodias plans to have John beheaded. Now his fate rests in the hands of King Herod’s daughter, Salome. This biblical tale will delight fans of Ancient Rome and historical fiction. Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) was a French novelist, regarded as one of the greatest Western writers and a leading exponent of literary realism in France. A hugely influential figure, he is best known for his debut novel ‘Madame Bovary’ (1857), which caused a nationwide scandal upon publication with its realistic portrayal of bourgeois life. The historical novel ‘Salammbô’ and the painting-inspired ‘The Temptation of Saint Anthony’ are some of his other well-known works. Many of Flaubert’s stories have since been adapted for TV and film including ‘Madame Bovary’ (2000) starring Hugh Bonneville.

This enormous undertaking, which, according to one of the prefaces, professes to be a complete list of every bird known at the time of publication, kept growing even as it was being written. The Museum added eagerly to their already vast collections during the decades of publication, acquiring by gift the great collections of A.O. Hume on Asian birds, and those of Sclater and Salvin and Godwin on Neotropical birds, so that the size of the collection nearly tripled between 1874 and 1888. Sharpe originally intended to do all the work himself, but others were called in when this became clearly impossible. The plates are all of birds not previously illustrated. In the decades following its publication this catalogue was universally acclaimed as the most important work on systematic ornithology that has ever been published. (Zimmer, p. 96). And even after one hundred years it remains an essential reference for the serious ornithologist, as it underpins a great deal of modern bird classification. With 387 plates, most hand-coloured lithographs, some chromolithographs, by William Hart, J.G. Keulemans, Joseph and Peter Smit.

Mark by Dr. Matthew N. O. Sadiku Pdf

Every serious student of the Bible desires to understand the text, discover the biblical principles, and apply the truths to his/her life. This commentary is designed to help students, pastors, and Bible teachers understand the Gospel of Mark in a simple manner. Working from the popular New International Version (NIV), the author provides helpful commentary on the text verse by verse. This verse-by-verse commentary is different from others in two respects. First, it is brief while some commentaries are unnecessarily wordy and verbose. Second, it is Pentecostal in outlook. This implies that we generally adhere to the doctrine of biblical inerrancy and adopt a literalist approach to the interpretation of the Bible. The major aim of this commentary is to expose readers to the Gospel of Mark. It is written primarily for the busy pastor, Sunday school teacher, or Christian leader who desires to learn better the Gospel of Mark. The Gospel of Mark is the shortest and simplest of the four Gospels. It gives an action-packed, authentic record of the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ. The inspired story of Mark portrays Jesus Christ as the complete and final revelation of God to His creation.

Broken, Searching, Trusted, Powerful by J. Guarnieri Hagemeyer Pdf

At first glance, it may seem as though the Bible is populated with the stories of faithful men, courageous men, or nefarious men, men who were either enemies or friends of God. Mostly stories of men. Added to the difficulty of seeing women in the pages of Scripture is the effort it takes to “hear” their voices and understand their stories. The Bible itself was written largely from the male perspective, concentrating on male heroes and villains. (Only the books of Ruth and Esther focus on a woman, and neither one is written from an explicitly female lens.) Women most often become supporting characters. Without thinking about it, we’ve accepted this point of view, and this unspoken role for women across time. But a second glance reveals the stories of often-unnamed women as living faithfully and courageously for God (as well as some living powerfully and villainously against God). Regardless of whose point of view is reflected in Scripture’s stories, women as much as men have contributed to the great narrative of God and humanity. May their grit and tenacity, their dignity and tragedy embolden you and me to live out our faith to the full.
