Hey! Listen! by Andrew S. Latham Pdf

How does analyzing video games as hypertexts expand the landscape of research for video game rhetoricians and games studies scholars? This is the first book to focus on how hypertext rhetoric impacts the five canons of rhetoric, and to apply that hypertext rhetoric to the study of video games. It also explores how ludonarrative agency is seized by players seeking to express themselves in ways that game makers did not necessarily intend when making the games that players around the world enjoy. This book takes inspiration from The Legend of Zelda, a series which players all over the world have spent decades deconstructing through online playthroughs, speedruns, and glitch hunts. Through these playthroughs, players demonstrate their ability to craft their own agency, independent of the objectives built by the makers of these games, creating new rhetorical situations worthy of analysis and consideration.

Hey! Listen! by Steve McNeil Pdf

For fans of Daniel Hardcastle's Fuck Yeah!, Videogames and Retro Tech by peter leigh. Equal parts hilarious and informative, Hey! Listen! should be in every gamer's library. - Lucy James, (Gamespot) An informative, accessible romp through the early years of the games industry. All hail Il pirata pallido; the gaming hero we never knew we needed. - Adam Rosser BBC Radio 5Live Steve McNeil is funny, knowledgeable, and a massive, shameless, nerd. His brilliant book reminded me just how much of my life I've wasted. If the Golden Age of Gaming is a horse, then Steve's book is the stable. - Paul Rose (aka Mr Biffo), Digitiser A thoroughly enjoyable look at the early days of video gaming - comprehensive and fun. Loved it! - Stuart Ashen (aka ashens) The 'A La Recherche du Temps Perdu' of the gaming community. The 'A La Recherche du Temps Pew-Pew-Pew', as it were. - Dara O'Briain If 'Games Master' was a Nobel title passed on through the ages like 'Duke of York' or 'Rear of the Year' rather than simply the name of a 90s magazine and TV show then Steve McNeil would surely be the current holder of the esteemed position. What I'm saying is, he knows a LOT about games... - Scroobius Pip Taking us on a historical journey from the very early days all the way through to the late 1990s the book tells the stories of the men and women behind some of the most wonderful (and occasionally awful) games of the golden age, the fierce rivalries, bizarre business practices and downright bonkers risks taken during the pioneering days of computer and video gaming. This informal yet extremely well-researched book manages to educate and entertain in equal measure and this - dare I say - well-informed retrohead actually learnt a good deal. A thoroughly enjoyable read! - Mark Howlett (aka Lord Arse) Hugely funny, and full of fantastic facts about the history of video games. But enough about me; Steve's book is also quite good. - Ellie Gibson, Eurogamer A hilarious history of the golden period of computer games from the creator of Dara O'Briain's Go 8 Bit. It is fair to say Steve McNeil likes video games. He took a Nintendo Wii with him on his honeymoon (obviously), and spent so much time playing smartphone games in bed in the dark that he got eye strain and had to wear an eye patch. The locals nicknamed him 'the pale pirate'. Steve's obsession with video games can be traced back to the golden period from the early 70s to the late 90s. In this book he will delve into these games - from the appallingly bad to the breathtakingly good. He will also take us through the nerdy geniuses who created them, their fierce rivalries and risks often leading to some of the most farcical moments in the history of entertainment. This is a story of obsession, full of tales of Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, Mario, Sonic, Wolfenstein 3D, Worms and many more. It will also answer important questions about the golden age. Questions like: Why did Namco feel they had to change the name of Puck-Man to Pac-Man because they were worried about graffiti, when Nintendo were more than happy to bring out Duck Hunt? Joysticks at the ready. Let's do a gaming!

Bob Holman's India Journals by Bob Holman Pdf

From Bob Holman's India Journals: "I pull my camera out and stand next to Ram while he shoots with the pro camera. By gumbo, it is beautifully lit! and once Jitendra starts to rock, rolling it out like Ginsberg himself, a satori moment re: the aforementioned Trilochen, which means “Third Eye” in Hindi. Jitendra recites, in Hindi, a Trilochen poem about Ginsberg, footnotes spoken in English. It starts to sink in — is this local poet, one of the hundreds Allen would meet in India, the missing link, marking the beginning of his transformation from taking drugs to following a spiritual path?" Looking for a journey to the High Ear of Poetry? What you need is a quick trip to India — through the jottings of Bob Holman! Discover the Secret of Consciousness! The Truth of Matter! The Holy Vernacular Guru! How the 60s were born, how Buddhism came to the US, and how a band of vagabond poets changed the world! Listening to War by J. Martin Daughtry Pdf

To witness war is, in large part, to hear it. And to survive it is, among other things, to have listened to it--and to have listened through it. Listening to War: Sound, Music, Trauma, and Survival in Wartime Iraq is a groundbreaking study of the centrality of listening to the experience of modern warfare. Based on years of ethnographic interviews with U.S. military service members and Iraqi civilians, as well as on direct observations of wartime Iraq, author J. Martin Daughtry reveals how these populations learned to extract valuable information from the ambient soundscape while struggling with the deleterious effects that it produced in their ears, throughout their bodies, and in their psyches. Daughtry examines the dual-edged nature of sound--its potency as a source of information and a source of trauma--within a sophisticated conceptual frame that highlights the affective power of sound and the vulnerability and agency of individual auditors. By theorizing violence through the prism of sound and sound through the prism of violence, Daughtry provides a productive new vantage point for examining these strangely conjoined phenomena. Two chapters dedicated to wartime music in Iraqi and U.S. military contexts show how music was both an important instrument of the military campaign and the victim of a multitude of violent acts throughout the war. A landmark work within the study of conflict, sound studies, and ethnomusicology, Listening to War will expand your understanding of the experience of armed violence, and the experience of sound more generally. At the same time, it provides a discrete window into the lives of individual Iraqis and Americans struggling to orient themselves within the fog of war.

Mysterious Heaven by Sohail Rashid Pdf

About Book: I have wrote this book about the strange creature of Allah about whom Almighty itself says that amongst all the creatures I have made this creature special and a specific name given was “Ashraful-Makhluqat” but unfortunately he used his ideology for such things which later became a type of barrier to his joyful life, his inventions snatched away his everything even the costless smile. This book deals mainly with the people of Kashmir, their customs, their attitude towards creator have destroyed their everything being known to everything they don’t even dare to leave their lifestyle and attitude towards other people and hence got the prey of repression from the very beginning, whenever their past is red only a single thing that comes out of body is tears and sighs full of pain.

Finished from the Start and Other Plays by Juan Radrigan,Ana Elena Puga Pdf

The trilogy Funeral Drums for Lambs and Wolves includes Isabel Banished in Isabel, the monologue of a woman left to go mad alone; Without Apparent Motive, the monologue of a murderer lamenting the spread of violence; and The Guest, or Tranquility Is Priceless, a confrontational dialogue that speaks directly to the spectators, implicating them for their silent, passive tolerance of Pinochet. The title play, Radrigan's 1981 masterpiece, speaks directly to the specter of the disappeared."--Jacket.
