Hierarchy and dynamics in neural networks by Rolf Kötter,Marcus Kaiser,Claus C. Hilgetag Pdf

Hierarchy is a central feature in the organisation of complex biological systems and particularly the structure and function of neural networks. While other aspects of brain connectivity such as regionalisation, modularity or motif composition have been discussed elsewhere, no detailed analysis has been presented so far on the role of hierarchy and its connection to brain dynamics. Recent discussions among many of our colleagues have shown an increasing interest in hierarchy (of spatial, temporal and dynamic features), and this is an emerging key question in neuroscience as well as generally in the field of network science, due to its links with concepts of control, efficiency and development across scales (e.g. Hilgetag et al. Science, 1996; Ravasz et al. Science, 2002; Bassett et al. PNAS, 2006; Mueller-Linow et al. PLoS Comp. Biol., in press). The proposed Research Topic will address recent findings from a theoretical as well as experimental perspective including contributions under the following four headings: 1) Topology: Detecting and characterizing network hierarchy; 2) Experiments: Neural dynamics across hierarchical scales; 3) Dynamics: Activity spread, oscillations, and synchronization in hierarchical networks; 4) Dynamics: Stable functioning and information processing in hierarchical networks.

A Chaotic Hierarchy by Gerold Baier,Michael Klein Pdf

This collection of articles introduces the idea of a hierarchical order in chaotic systems and natural phenomena. To understand nature, nonlinear sciences use a multidisciplinary perspective. Therefore the book integrates research work of different fields: experimental evidence for the theory drawn from physics, biology and chemistry; theoretical progress in mathematical treatment, numerical techniques and graphical methods of nonlinear sciences; and to not-yet-understood philosophical and fundamental problems related to chaos and cosmos, chaos and quantum mechanics or evolutionary dynamics. Featuring the most recent advances in nonlinear dynamics this collection should provide an indispensable reference source and starting point for further research concerning dynamical and hierarchical chaotic systems. Besides this book is in honor of Professor O E Rössler, one of the pioneers of Chaos Theory, who celebrated his 50th birthday in May 1990. Neural Network Dynamics by J.G. Taylor,E.R. Caianiello,R.M.J. Cotterill,J.W. Clark Pdf

Neural Network Dynamics is the latest volume in the Perspectives in Neural Computing series. It contains papers presented at the 1991 Workshop on Complex Dynamics in Neural Networks, held at IIASS in Vietri, Italy. The workshop encompassed a wide range of topics in which neural networks play a fundamental role, and aimed to bridge the gap between neural computation and computational neuroscience. The papers - which have been updated where necessary to include new results - are divided into four sections, covering the foundations of neural network dynamics, oscillatory neural networks, as well as scientific and biological applications of neural networks. Among the topics discussed are: A general analysis of neural network activity; Descriptions of various network architectures and nodes; Correlated neuronal firing; A theoretical framework for analyzing the behaviour of real and simulated neuronal networks; The structural properties of proteins; Nuclear phenomenology; Resonance searches in high energy physics; The investigation of information storage; Visual cortical architecture; Visual processing. Neural Network Dynamics is the first volume to cover neural networks and computational neuroscience in such detail. Although it is primarily aimed at researchers and postgraduate students in the above disciplines, it will also be of interest to researchers in electrical engineering, medicine, psychology and philosophy.

The Springer Handbook of Auditory Research presents a series of comprehensive and synthetic reviews of the fundamental topics in modern auditory research. The v- umes are aimed at all individuals with interests in hearing research including advanced graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and clinical investigators. The volumes are intended to introduce new investigators to important aspects of hearing science and to help established investigators to better understand the fundamental theories and data in fields of hearing that they may not normally follow closely. Each volume presents a particular topic comprehensively, and each serves as a synthetic overview and guide to the literature. As such, the chapters present neither exhaustive data reviews nor original research that has not yet appeared in pe- reviewed journals. The volumes focus on topics that have developed a solid data and conceptual foundation rather than on those for which a literature is only beg- ning to develop. New research areas will be covered on a timely basis in the series as they begin to mature.

Innovations in ART Neural Networks by Beatrice Lazzerini,Ugur Halici Pdf

In the last two decades the artificial neural networks have been refined and widely used by the researchers and application engineers. We have not witnessed such a large degree of evolution in any other artificial neural network as in the Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) neural network. The ART network remains plastic, or adaptive, in response to significant events and yet remains stable in response to irrelevant events. This stability-plasticity property is a great step towards realizing intelligent machines capable of autonomous learning in real time environment. The main aim of this book is to report a very small sample of the research on the evolution of ART neural network and its applications. Interested readers may refer literature for many more innovations in ART such as Fuzzy ART, ART2, ART2-a, ARTMAP, ARTMAP-PI, ARTMAP-DS, Gaussian ARTMAP, EXACT ART, and ART-EMAP.

th This volume is part of the three-volume proceedings of the 20 International Conference on Arti?cial Neural Networks (ICANN 2010) that was held in Th- saloniki, Greece during September 15–18, 2010. ICANN is an annual meeting sponsored by the European Neural Network Society (ENNS) in cooperation with the International Neural Network So- ety (INNS) and the Japanese Neural Network Society (JNNS). This series of conferences has been held annually since 1991 in Europe, covering the ?eld of neurocomputing, learning systems and other related areas. As in the past 19 events, ICANN 2010 provided a distinguished, lively and interdisciplinary discussion forum for researches and scientists from around the globe. Ito?eredagoodchanceto discussthe latestadvancesofresearchandalso all the developments and applications in the area of Arti?cial Neural Networks (ANNs). ANNs provide an information processing structure inspired by biolo- cal nervous systems and they consist of a large number of highly interconnected processing elements (neurons). Each neuron is a simple processor with a limited computing capacity typically restricted to a rule for combining input signals (utilizing an activation function) in order to calculate the output one. Output signalsmaybesenttootherunitsalongconnectionsknownasweightsthatexcite or inhibit the signal being communicated. ANNs have the ability “to learn” by example (a large volume of cases) through several iterations without requiring a priori ?xed knowledge of the relationships between process parameters.

The Physics of Structure Formation by Werner Güttinger,Gerhard Dangelmayr Pdf

The formation and evolution of complex dynamical structures is one of the most exciting areas of nonlinear physics. Such pattern formation problems are common in practically all systems involving a large number of interacting components. Here, the basic problem is to understand how competing physical forces can shape stable geometries and to explain why nature prefers just these. Motivation for the intensive study of pattern formation phenomena during the past few years derives from an increasing appreciation of the remarkable diversity of behaviour encountered in nonlinear systems and of universal features shared by entire classes of nonlinear processes. As physics copes with ever more ambi tious problems in pattern formation, summarizing our present state of knowledge becomes a pressing issue. This volume presents an overview of selected topics in this field of current interest. It deals with theoretical models of pattern formation and with simulations that bridge the gap between theory and experiment. The book is a product of the International Symposium on the Physics of Structure Formation, held from October 27 through November 2, 1986, at the Institute for Information Sciences of the University of Tiibingen. The symposium brought together a group of distinguished scientists from various disciplines to exchange ideas about recent advances in pattern formation in the physical sciences, and also to introduce young scientists to the fi
