Historical Cities of Delhi: Walks Using the Delhi Metro by Siva Prasad Bose,Joy Bose Pdf

Delhi is much more than just the capital of India. It is a city with an amazing history. So many times, it has been the major city or capital of India, from the earliest Mahabharata days to the Rajputs to the Delhi Sultanate to the Mughals to the British. Each time the new rulers left their mark on the city. As a result, now we have a Delhi which has the mark of at least seven or eight different historical cities, if not more. In this book, we review the different historical cities of Delhi. We use the Delhi metro, which is currently probably the best developed metro in India, as the preferred means of transport to see the sights of the seven cities of Delhi. We hope that this short guide will help the reader the experience a little bit of what Delhi is all about, its people and its history. In this book, we do not cover all the historical sites or attractions of Delhi, such as the many modern museums, markets and other attractions. Rather, we focus on the sites that form part of the historical cities of Delhi and those that are located within the historical boundaries of those cities. This book was born out of many travels and exploratory walks made by the authors in Delhi, where they live.

14 Historic Walks of Delhi by Swapna Liddle Pdf

Over at least two millennia, Delhi has witnessed several kingdoms and empires come and go, and has been enriched by each one of them. Their imprint survives to this day in the modern metropolis-most visibly, in its historic buildings, gardens and settlements. In 14 Historic Walks of Delhi, Swapna Liddle, acclaimed historian and passionate narrator of the city's heritage, takes us to iconic monuments and neighbourhoods-World Heritage Sites like Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb and Red Fort; the sprawling Lodi Gardens; the bustling galis of Chandni Chowk and Nizamuddin; the Central Vista of New Delhi; as well as lesserknown areas like the Satpula dam and the Mehrauli and Khirki villages. In crisp and breezy prose, Liddle gives us the historical and architectural significance of these sites, sprinkling her narrative with entertaining anecdotes. Some other highlights of the book are: - Detailed maps accompanying every route, with information about tickets, the nearest bus stop and metro station, parking availability, and advice about appropriate walking gear. - Architectural features described in ways that make appreciation of structural and decorative elements easy for a lay person as well. - Photographs taken specifically to accompany the text. First published in 2011, this bestseller-extensively revised and updated in 2023-is the finest, most useful guide to one of the world's great cities for the tourist and the local resident, the flaneur and the serious history enthusiast alike.

The Moving City by Rashmi Sadana Pdf

The Moving City is a rich and intimate account of urban transformation told through the story of Delhi's Metro, a massive infrastructure project that is reshaping the city's social and urban landscapes. Ethnographic vignettes introduce the feel and form of the Metro and let readers experience the city, scene by scene, stop by stop, as if they, too, have come along for the ride. Laying bare the radical possibilities and concretized inequalities of the Metro, and how people live with and through its built environment, this is a story of women and men on the move, the nature of Indian aspiration, and what it takes morally and materially to sustain urban life. Through exquisite prose, Rashmi Sadana transports the reader to a city shaped by both its Metro and those who depend on it, revealing a perspective on Delhi unlike any other.

Theorizing Fieldwork in the Humanities by Shalini Puri,Debra A. Castillo Pdf

This volume, the first of its kind, launches a conversation amongst humanities scholars doing fieldwork on the global south. It both offers indispensable tools and demonstrates the value of such work inside and outside of the academy. The contributors reflect upon their experiences of fieldwork, the methods they improvised, their dilemmas and insights, and the ways in which fieldwork shifted their frames of analysis. They explore how to make fieldwork legible to their disciplines and how fieldwork might extend the work of the humanities. The volume is for both those who are already deeply immersed in fieldwork in the humanities and those who are seeking ways to undertake it.
