History of Duchess County, New York, by H. P. Smith Pdf

"The history of Duchess County dates back to the period when the Hudson was discovered by the English navigator whose name it bears, though actual settlement was not commenced until three-quarters of a century later. The first settlers were Dutch, though no settlement was made under the Dutch regime, and for fully half a century after it was begun it progressed but slowly. From the middle of the eighteenth century, however, its growth was rapid, and not until then did it approximate a primal importance. The development of its varied industries and institutions is succinctly stated in the succeeding chapters." Other chapters cover early settlements, early civil divisions, geology, internal improvements, county societies, early courts, and military history. Chapters 17 through 47 cover the history of each town: Red Hook, Milan, Pine Plains, North East, Rhinebeck, Clinton, Stanford, Hyde Park, Pleasant Valley, Washington, Amenia, Poughkeepsie (town and city), LaGrange, Union Vale, Dover, Wappinger Fishkill, East Fishkill, Beekman, and Pawling. A detailed table of contents and lists of illustrations and biographies provide easy access to information. Numerous illustrations highlight the text. CD3755HB - $19.95

Selvages & Biases by Michael G. Kammen Pdf

Winner of the 1973 Pulitzer Prize for history, Kammen addresses three themes concerning the state of historical inquiry in America. Beginning with how history as a professional discipline has changed over the past century, the book treats the relationship of the historian's craft to American nationalism, the value of historical knowledge, and the shifting attitudes of historians toward society. Kammen appraises the significance of historiography as a measure of cultural change and shows how the past has been manipulated for social and ideological reasons, and how memories of the national and regional past have conflicted with the realities of historical experience. He also explains how traditional modes of interpreting the past have lost their cohesive force and why historians should pursue new approaches to the cultural history. ISBN 0-8014-1924-7: $24.95.

Poughkeepsie by Joyce C. Ghee,Joan Spence Pdf

From the colonial period, the Poughkeepsie area has been a prime location on the Hudson, midway between Albany and New York City. Accessibility, scenic beauty, and a dynamic economic and cultural environment have made both city and town of Poughkeepsie excellent communities in which to live, work, and play. Numerous Americans have left their mark here, including the Livingstons, S.F.B. Morse, the Smith Brothers (of cough drop fame), Matthew Vassar, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, and Thomas Watson Sr. Poughkeepsie has also been enhanced by the contributions of its African American community and by successive waves of immigrants seeking a better life. From hosting New York's United States Constitutional Ratification Convention in 1788 to becoming the location of IBM during World War II, Poughkeepsie has continued to be the site of world-changing events.
