History of England, Vol. 5 of 10 by Samuel R. Gardiner Pdf

Excerpt from History of England, Vol. 5 of 10: From the Accession of James I. To the Outbreak of the Civil War, 1603 1642; 1623 1625 In the part of this volume relating to the Prince's journey Madrid I have had nothing but verbal alterations to make. Later on I have had at my disposal the despatches of Inojosa, Coloma, and Lafuente, in Mr. Cosens' transcripts, and, with their help, have been able at last to give an account at first hand of the relations between the Spanish ambassadors and the King during the first half of 1624. Toward the end of the volume appears occasionally a reference to the Melbourne MSS. They form a collection preserved at Melbourne Hall, a great part of which was originally made by Sir John Coke, and is now in the possession of Earl Cowper, for whose kind permission to examine the papers I wish to express my gratitude. I have also to thank Mr. W. D Fane, the present tenant of Melbourne Hall, for the facilities which he accorded me for conducting my researches, and for placing in my hands the abstracts which he has drawn up of the greater part of the papers. History of England From the Accession of James I, Vol. 4 of 10 by Samuel R. Gardiner Pdf

Excerpt from History of England From the Accession of James I, Vol. 4 of 10: To the Outbreak of the Civil War 1603-1642 If we wish to know what the views of Bacon and other officers of state really were, the first thing to be done is to cono sult the original patents. No doubt there is much which will not be learned there. We shall not find any light thrown on the personal motives of those through whose influence they were obtained. But if we find a large number of official declarations spread over a long series of years, and emanating from men who differed from one another in character, in posi tion, and in political Opinion, we shall be able to discover whether they contain indications of a settled policy, or are mere makeshifts put forward to cover the greed of unprincipled courtiers. Of the patents subsequently complained of there were two, the patent for inns and the patent for alehouses, which were specially objected to, partly as encroaching upon the jurisdiction of the justices of the peace, and partly as having been made the excuse for gross injustice and oppression. History of England from the Accession of James I to the Outbreak of the Civil War, 1603-1642: by Samuel Rawson Gardiner Pdf

Samuel Rawson Gardiner (1829-1902) was a distinguished Victorian historian of the seventeenth century who coined the term 'Puritan Revolution' and was noted for his use of and editorial work on primary sources. This ten-volume work was published in 1883-4, though he had already published eight volumes on the period 1603-37, of which the first two were considerably revised for this edition; and in later works he continued the story through the Civil War, the Commonwealth and the Protectorate. The series was highly regarded in its time, and reprinted often, although it was not without its critics. Gardiner aimed at writing 'scientific history', relying on the facts to speak for themselves. This fifth volume spans the period 1623-5, and includes chapters covering Prince Charles' journey to Madrid, the dissolution of the Spanish treaties, the last days of James I, and the first Parliaments of Charles I at Westminster and Oxford.
