Two Thousand Years in Exeter by W G Hoskins Pdf

Exeter is one of the oldest cities in Britain: people have lived here without a break for more than two thousand years. The High Street has been in continuous use as a thoroughfare throughout that long period. For centuries Exeter was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the kingdom and has always been the mother city of the South West. In this book, first published in 1960 and acclaimed as a 'small masterpiece', the author traces the essential historic development and character of a leading provincial centre. He describes its adventure from a Roman camp to a modern city, with particular reference to its social history, to the lives and surroundings of ordinary people, to the buildings and landscapes of the past. Above all, he is concerned with the recent past and devotes three thorough chapters to the 19th and 20th centuries. W. G. Hoskins died in 1992. The task of bringing the work up to date and preparing text and illustrations for this new edition of a classic work has been undertaken by Hazel Harvey, a distinguished local historian of Exeter. Much of Exeter has been destroyed, but much of the historic past of this entrancing city still remains. Hoskins' incomparable text is supported by a new selection of illustrations and maps, with an appendix on the street names of the city and place names in the neighbourhood. This book will be as valuable to the visitor as to the citizen of Exeter, for it tells where to look for the memorials of the past and for the history that lies behind them.

Not illustrated. 1861 edition. Excerpt: ...gateway with its triangular-headed openings without pronouncing it to be an early specimen of the Norman architecture in this country. To Baldwin de Molis, or De Brioniis, or De Sap, who had married Albreda, the Conqueror's niece, was assigned the charge of superintending the work; and the custody of the castle, with the office of Sheriff of Devon, was granted him as an hereditary appendage to his Barony of Okehampton. The historian, however, of 3 Sir Henry Thomas de la Beche, the distinguished geologist. Ford Abbey contends tbat this grant was made to Richard, the son of the same Baldwin. From the Patent Rolls, the Charter Rolls, and the Close Rolls of King John, it is evident that this sovereign at least exercised the power of appointing the governor of the castle at pleasure;4 and that the expenses of repairing the fortifications, of sinking the well, of making the fosse, and the costs of maintaining the garrison, were defrayed by the Crown. Scarcely had the Conqueror breathed his last, on 9th September, 1087, aet. 64, when England was threatened with the calamity of a disputed succession. Robert was the eldest son, though not the faourite one like William, of the deceased monarch. According to Ralph de Diceto, the majority of the barons was disposed to maintain the claims of the elder brother, and he enumerates amongst them Robert de Avranches, a grandson of Baldwin de Sap, above mentioned, who had the command of Exeter. Fortunately for the public welfare, an amicable arrangement took place between the brothers. William was to retain the crown for his life, and Robert was contented with the Dukedom of Normandy and an annual pension besides. The death of King Henry I., at St. Denys le Froment, in Normandy, on 1st December, 1135, was...

Exeter's University by Prof. Jeremy Black Pdf

Tracing the development of the University of Exeter over the six decades since it was granted its royal charter in 1955, this book tells the history of the institution and its community. Jeremy Black draws on a wide range of resources, from archival material to the personal recollections of staff and students. He records and analyses the story of the university as it engaged with the need to expand and evolve while responding to constant financial and political pressures. The book includes interviews with leading university figures, contributions from former students, and a postscript looking to the future. It charts the University of Exeter’s changing place in the world of higher education. from the author’s Preface ... 'In 2013–14, I wrote The City on the Hill: A Life of the University of Exeter, which was published in 2015 as part of the university’s Diamond Jubilee. That extensively illustrated and very heavy book is a worthy memorial. This is a different book: it draws on some additional research, while the opportunity to rewrite the study, and bring it up to date has proved welcome. The work has been greatly eased by the great friendship and wonderful co-operation I have encountered. Staff and students, past and present, have given much time, to pass on information and opinion, to answer questions, and to read and comment on drafts.'
