Historical Criticism and the Old Testament (Classic Reprint) by Marie-Joseph Lagrange Pdf

Excerpt from Historical Criticism and the Old Testament We do not even differ as to the use of terms, for we, too, prefer to avoid the word myth.' Further, the reviewer seems to think that we do not admit the historicity Of the Patriarchs, from the time Of Abraham. This is quite contrary to our clearly expressed Opinion. But if popular legend developed that history in its own peculiar way, as Herr Vetter grants it did, are not such stories as that of the wife of Lot, and the origin of Moab and Ammon, typical instances of the process? Founders of Old Testament Criticism by Thomas Kelly Cheyne Pdf

Excerpt from Founders of Old Testament Criticism: Biographical, Descriptive, and Critical Studies All these statements are, I believe, based on un fortunate misconceptions, which are best removed by throwing as much light as possible on the history of criticism. To do this adequately would of course be a work of immense labour, nor have I leisure to attempt it. But I venture to hope that the present series of studies may be a small contribution towards the future history, and that the personal elements in the studies may give them a certain value even after the history has been accomplished. For it is not un important to notice how the intellectual phases and material surroundings of a writer have affected his criticism. We may see thus how natural and in evitable his course was, and how pardonable were his errors; we may also gather from his life both warnings and encouragements. I have taken special pains to make this clear in the cases of Ewald, who for a time almost seemed to have been annexed by liberal English theology, and of De Wette. And the whole series is concluded by asurvey of the present state of Old Testament criticism, without which indeed the volume would have lacked much of any practical helpfulness which it may possess. Let me explain. The last three chapters, though more predominantly critical than the preceding ones. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Foundations of the Bible: Studies in Old Testament Criticism Is it that fresh investigations into Hebrew and cognate languages have proved Biblical Hebrew to be later than was formerly supposed? Is it that some old mss. Have been discovered which have tended to shake men's faith in the trustworthiness of the Sacred Books? Is' it that some ancient monuments have been brought to light which have caused men to doubt the accuracy of the history contained in the Old Testament? Biblical Criticism on the First Fourteen Historical Books of the Old Testament, Vol. 1 of 4 by Samuel Horsley Pdf

Excerpt from Biblical Criticism on the First Fourteen Historical Books of the Old Testament, Vol. 1 of 4: Also on the First Nine Prophetical Books Six days begin to be counted from the first emersion of light from the chaos. The interval between the production of the matter of the chaos, out of which the universe was formed, and the formation of light, is undescribed and unknown; because there was no motion to mark and measure it. For the first motion was nothing more than an undulation, excited upon the surface of the chaos by the Spirit of God: and although it is highly probable, that this impression on the surface gave both the spherical figure, and the rotation upon the axis, yet this rotation, while all lay in darkness, as all must have done till light was, produced no sensible change, and afforded no measure of duration. But the moment that the din vine command gave birth to light, we find day and night succeed in regular vicissitude. The Old Testament in the Jewish Church by W. Robertson Smith Pdf

Excerpt from The Old Testament in the Jewish Church: A Course of Lectures on Biblical Criticism In republishing these Lectures, eleven years after their first appearance, I have had to consider what to emend, what to omit, and what to add. First, then, a careful revision of the whole volume has enabled me to correct a certain number of errors, and to make many statements more precise. In the second place, I have pruned away some redundancies more proper to oral delivery than to a printed book; and I have also removed from the "Notes and Illustrations" some things which seemed to be superfluous. As I was resolved to make no change on the general plan of the book, I at first hoped that these omissions would give me space for all necessary additions; for though much good work has been done within the last decade on special problems of Old Testament Criticism, there are not many points where these special researches affect the general arguments and broad results which I desired to set forth. But on mature consideration I came to see that in one direction the book might be profitably enlarged without a fundamental change of plan; it was desirable to give a fuller account of what the critics have to say about the narrative of the Old Testament Books. I have, therefore, made large additions to the part of Lecture V. that treats of the historical books, and, in consequence, have thrown the whole discussion of the Canon into Lecture VI. Criticism and the Old Testament by H. Theodore Knight Pdf

Excerpt from Criticism and the Old Testament: A Popular Introduction To Professor G. A. Smith's Modern Criticism and the Preaching of the Old Testament, ' I owe also a great deal, especially in Chapters IX and X. Indeed, it was the perusal of his fascinating pages, addressed primarily to preachers, which awakened in me, as one who has to occupy the pulpit, a desire to speak in writing to the occupant of the pew, and to show how criticism has enhanced the value of the Hebrew Scriptures. My debt to his lectures is both direct and indirect, though again I would say that my conclusions are not altogether to be laid to his charge. I have also utilised his commentary on Isaiah, in the Expositor's Bible.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He has also to thank Mr. Cruickshank for drawing up the list of kindred literature, published within the last quarter of a century, which will be found in the Appendix. History of New Testament Criticism (Classic Reprint) by F. C. Conybeare Pdf

Excerpt from History of New Testament Criticism The least unkind of my critics will probably find two faults with this work: firstly, that it is sketchy, and secondly, that its says too little of the history of textual criticism and of manuscript and versions in which the New Testament has come down to us. I must plead in excuse that I could do no more in so short a book, and that it is in any case not intended for specialists, but for the wider public. Within its limits there is no room to enumerate one half of the important commentaries and works of learning about the New Testament which have been produced in the last two hundred years. The briefest catalogue of these would have filled a volume four times as large. I had, therefore, to choose between a bare enumeration of names and titles, and a sketch of a movement of thought conducted by a few prominent scholars and critics. I chose the latter. Writing for English readers, I have also endeavoured to bring into prominence the work of English writers; and, in general, I have singled out for notice courageous writers who, besides being learned, were ready to face obloquy and unpopularity; for, unhappily, in the domain of Biblical criticism it is difficult to please the majority of readers without being apologetic in tone and "goody-goody." A worker in this field who finds himself praised by such journals as the Saturday Review or the Church Times may instantly suspect himself of being either superstitious or a time-server. So much in defence of myself from the first charge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
