Westerners in Gray by Phillip Thomas Tucker Pdf
Few infantry regiments in the Civil War compiled a more distinguished record than the Fifth Missouri. The unique blending of fiery Irish Confederates from St. Louis with rural pro-Southern Missourians forged an unshakable esprit de corps, making the unit the crack infantry regiment in the western sector. Most of Colonel James C. McCown's troops were young men in their 20s, and their good health and physical conditioning allowed them to carry out their "shock" missions throughout the region. From the perspective of the common soldiers and the unit's leaders the activities and battles of the Fifth Missouri are recounted here.

The Flags of Civil War Missouri by Glenn Dedmondt Pdf
This comprehensive historical reference offers an in-depth look at the Confederate flags of Missouri during the Civil War. Throughout the 1860s, scores of flags representing the Confederate State of Missouri and its soldiers were unfurled in the fight against the Union armies. Symbolizing the way of life those men sought to protect, these flags provide a unique index to the history of the Civil War in this western state. This comprehensive study of Missouri’s Civil War–era flags presents more than fifty authentic flags, along with information on their origins and the units they represented. The emblems, materials, construction, and dimensions of each flag are also included. From the banner borne by the First Regiment Missouri Volunteer Militia, which serves as a significant reminder of the Camp Jackson massacre, to the famed flag Brig. Gen. Joseph O. Shelby never surrendered, each Missouri ensign represents a moment in history.

Guerrilla Warfare in Civil War Missouri, Volume I, 1862 by Bruce Nichols Pdf
This book is a thorough study of all known guerrilla operations in Civil War Missouri in 1862, the year such warfare became the primary type of military action there and the year that the state saw almost constant fighting. An enormous variety of sources--military and government records, private accounts, county and other local histories, period and later newspapers, and secondary sources published after the war--are used to identify which Southern partisan leaders and groups operated in which areas of Missouri, and to describe how they operated and how their kinds of warfare evolved. The actions of Southern guerrilla forces and Confederate behind-enemy-lines recruiters are presented chronologically by region so that readers may see the relationship of seemingly isolated events to other events over a period of time in a given area. The counter-actions of an array of different types of Union troops are also covered to show how differences in training, leadership, and experiences affected behaviors and actions in the field.

Arranged in tabular format under county of origin the entries include some or all of the following information: the name of the Kentucky migrant, his birthdate, the names of his parents, and their dates and places of birth (if known), the name of the Missouri county in which the migrant first settled -- if different from his "current" county of residence -- and the earliest know date of his residence in Missouri. ..."--Forward.

Wales and the American Dream by Robert Llewellyn Tyler Pdf
The Welsh comprised a distinct and highly visible ethno-linguistic group in many areas of the United States during the late decades of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth. Through a consideration of settlement patterns, cultural and religious institutions, language retention, and marriage preference, this book provides a micro-study of four identifiable Welsh communities over a set period of time. The nature, strength and long-term viability of these communities is analysed and assessed, as are the ways in which they changed; a process which saw the Welsh become Welsh-Americans and, ultimately, Americans. Welsh immigrants in the USA were invariably portrayed as models of American citizenship by virtue of their perceived national characteristics and their standards of social behaviour. This book tests the assumption that the Welsh were prime illustrations of the American Dream by analysing one facet of that dream; socio-economic success as revealed by occupational mobility. To what extent did the Welsh as a group occupy a privileged position in the occupational hierarchy, and were they able to maintain and improve upon their social and economic position in a relatively short space of time?
