A History of the Catholic Church by Dom Charles Poulet Pdf

So vast is the material to be controlled, digested and presented in the work of preparing a manual of Church History for the use of students in colleges, seminaries and universities or for the enlightened portion of the general public, the historian who undertakes the task is always confronted with the problem of knowing what to leave out as non-essential details or events of secondary importance and what to include as matter of capital importance to an understanding of the story of the Church of Christ. He must carefully steer the course between the Scylla of the dry hard rocks of a lifeless series of dates and events and the Charybdis of the full flowing tide of a narrative too extensive for the student to master within the time allotted. For this reason, a really first class manual of Church history is rather rare. As a rule, authors include either too little or too much. Dom Poulet has apparently hit upon the happy medium. The success attained by his manual is attested by the fact that since its first publication his manual has now reached its fourth edition in the French original. The work is the ripe fruit of many years teaching of the subject to ecclesiastical students, for whose use it is primarily intended, although for that reason it is no less suitable for either the college group or the cultivated public. Approach to the vast amount of material involved and the orientation of the student or reader is rendered easier by excellent synoptic and chronological tables.... The paramount requirements of a manual of instruction are clarity, conciseness and precision. To this ideal Dom Poulet has strictly adhered. He has set aside secondary details, without at the same time omitting anything of importance. The development of dogmas is given an important place. The theological quarrels and controversies are exposed exactly and amply. As would be expected from the pen of a Benedictine, the history of the liturgy receives due attention. The text of the two volumes is easy to read; the style sober, correct and elegant. - ✠ Most Rev. Thomas K. Gorman, D.D., Bishop of Reno, Docteur en Sciences Historiques (Lovan.), February 14, 1935

History of the Catholic Church Volumes I & II by James MacCaffrey,Wyatt North Pdf

This edition of History of the Catholic Church Volume I and II comes complete with a Touch-or-Click Table of Contents, divided by each chapter. This wonderful book charts the history of the Catholic Church. This edition comes complete with both volumes in one book! Catholic doctrine teaches that the Roman Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ at the Confession of Peter. It interprets the Confession of Peter as acknowledging Christ's designation of Apostle Peter and his successors to be the temporal head of his Church. Thus, it asserts that the Bishop of Rome has the sole legitimate claim to Petrine authority and the primacy due to the Roman Pontiff. The Catholic Church claims legitimacy for its bishops and priests via the doctrine of apostolic succession and authority of the Pope via the unbroken line of popes, claimed as successors to Simon Peter. With the election of Pope Benedict XVI in 2005, the Church has so far seen largely a continuation of the policies of his predecessor, John Paul II, with some notable exceptions: Benedict decentralized beatifications and reverted the decision of his predecessor regarding papal elections. In 2007, he set a Church record by approving the beatification of 498 Spanish Martyrs. You can purchase other wonderful religious works from Wyatt North Publishing.

New Short History of the Catholic Church by Norman Tanner Pdf

____________ 'A useful book of reference by the master of the history of the councils of the Church... There is enormous value in a short, reliable, and careful study of a sequence of events that may have unfamiliar joinings and passageways to modern believers...' - Catholic Historical Review 'A short, readable and informed survey of church history.' - The Church of England Newspaper 'A rich foundation for Catholic understanding and witness.' - Catholic San Francisco ____________ A one-volume history of the Christian people from Pentecost to the present day, with principal focus on the Catholic Church. Having passed AD 2000 it seems appropriate and necessary to have a new short history of the first two millennia of the Christian era. In the last half century there has been a massive amount of research into Church history, published in learned articles and in multi-volume works. Full notice is taken of these recent scholarly initiatives in writing this short account, which is also eminently readable. In each section there is a balance between the institutional and the more directly religious dimensions of the Church - here are some of the elements: bishops, canon law, charity, councils crusades, devotions, heresies, laity, liturgy, martyrs, missionaries, parishes, pilgrimages, popes, prayer, priesthood, religious orders, sacraments, schools, theologians, universities and the vita consacrata. The scope is wide; the pace of the narrative is attractive.

Triumph by H.W. Crocker III Pdf

For 2,000 years, Catholicism—the largest religion in the world and in the United States—has shaped global history on a scale unequaled by any other institution. But until now, Catholics interested in their faith have been hard-pressed to find an accessible, affirmative, and exciting history of the Church. Triumph is that history. Inside, you'll discover the spectacular story of the Church from Biblical times and the early days of St. Peter—the first pope—to the twilight years of John Paul II. It is a sweeping drama of Roman legions, great crusades, epic battles, toppled empires, heroic saints, and enduring faith. And, there are stormy controversies: Dark Age skullduggery, the Inquistition, the Renaissance popes, the Reformation, the Church's refusal to accept sexual liberation and contemporary allegations like those made in Hitler's Pope and Papal Sin. A brawling, colorful history full of inspiring pageantry and spirited polemic, Triumph will exhilarate, amuse, and infuriate as it extols the glories of Catholic history and the gripping stories of its greatest men and women.
