History of the Consulate and the Empire of France Under Napoleon, Vol. 3 (Classic Reprint) by Adolphe Thiers Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Consulate and the Empire of France Under Napoleon, Vol. 3 But the people, and especially the monks, that cloistered portion of the people, were ex asperated. Among these last nothing could mitigate the feeling of wounded pride - neither the hope of a regeneration which they were incapable of appreciating, nor tolerance in re gard to foreigners whom they detested, neither the love of repose nor the fear of disorder. The Spanish people, the people of the streets and the fields, like those of the cloister, ardent, ia dolent, weary of quiet, so far from being fond of it, caring little about the burning of towns or country houses, in which there was nothing belonging to them, were ready to gratify that propensity to agitation, which the French peo ple had gratified in 1789, by efi'ecting a great democratic revolution. They were ready to exert, in support of the old system all the dem agogue passions which the French people had exerted for the foundation of the new one. They were about to be as violent, as tumul tuous, as sanguinary, for the throne and the altar, as their neighbours had been against both. They were about to be so in proportion to the warmth of their blood and the ferocity of their disposition. In the Spanish people, nevertheless, a noble sentiment blended with the feelings that we have just mentioned - the love of their country, of their kings, of their religion, which they amalgamated into one af fection, and under the inspiration of which they were destined to furnish splendid examples of fortitude and frequently of heroism. Happy and noble rivalry, had it never extended any further! After so bold and so decided a manoeuvre, on the part of his adversary, M. de Kray could no longer remain at Ulm, without being cut off from his communication with Vienna. To march direct upon the French, for the purpose of giving them battle, would be too hazardous, with soldiers whose courage had been again rudely shaken by the last engagements. He hastened, therefore, to decamp that same night. He sent off before him the park, consisting of nearly a thousand carriages, and followed next day, with the main body of the army, by the Nordlingen road. He marched in dreadful weather, and on roads which were in a shocking state from the rain. Such was, nevertheless, the rapidity of his retreat, that in twenty-four hours he reached Neresheim. To cheer his dispirited troops, he put in circulation a report that a suspension of arms had just been signed in Italy, that it was to be extended to Germany, and that peace could not fail to follow. This intelligence diffused joy among his soldiers, and imparted a degree of energy. They arrived at Nordlingen. Moreau had been apprised too late of the departure of the enemy. Richepanse was not able to perceive the evacuation of Ulm till the last detachments were retiring, and he immediately communicated the intelligence to the commander-in-chief. But the Austrians had meanwhile gained the start, and, the bad weather, which prevailed for two days, prevented the French from overtaking them by a forced march. Moreau, nevertheless, arrived at Nordlingen on the 23rd of June, in the evening, closely pressing the rear-guard of...

History of the Consulate and the Empire of France Under Napoleon, Vol. 4 (Classic Reprint) by Adolphe Thiers Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Consulate and the Empire of France Under Napoleon, Vol. 4 On pronouncing these words, Napoleon as sumed the most threatening air, and a new war was evinced in his gestures, his accent, and his look. He resumed and said, This war against England is long and painful, I well know. But what would you have me do? What method should I adopt? Apparently, since you complain so much of the sea being closed, you demand that it should be open, that a single power should not rule them at the ex pense of all others, nor take possession of the colonies of all other nations, nor arrogate to itself despotic power over every flag. For my part, I am irrevocably fixed in this matter: I will never abandon the rights of neutrals; I will never allow the principle to prevail that the lag does not protect merchandise; that the neutral is obliged to repair to England and there to pay tribute. If I had the baseness to mintain such theories you would shortly be unable to leave Bouen or Havre without a pass port from the English. My decrees of Berlin and Milan shall be the laws of the Empire until England shall have renounced her foolish pre tmsions. The Americans ask leave to reappear in our ports, to bring you cotton and to take your silk, which would afford you great relief. History of the Consulate and the Empire of France Under Napoleon, Vol. 11 by Adolphe Thiers Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Consulate and the Empire of France Under Napoleon, Vol. 11: Forming a Sequel Napoleon calculated that these 300 thousand men, whom he did not suppose so much diminished as they really were by fatigue, sickness, and dispersions, would be more than sufficient to subjugate Spain, even though reduced to 200 thousand, since the English would naturally have lost all relish for aiding the Spaniards since the campaign of Corui'ia. Under vigorous com mand, these 200 thousand would certainly have been sufficient, although the passion of a whole people in arms against the foreigner is capable of working many miracles; but the authority left by Napoleon at Madrid to interpret his instructions, and cause them to be executed, could not supply the place of his genius, or of his will, or of his ascendancy over men; and the most powerful means were destined to be wrecked, not by the resistance of the Spaniards, but by the military anarchy resulting from his absence. King Joseph, in fact, though good tempered, rational, and of tolerably well-regulated habits, possessed, as we have said, none of the qualities of a commander, though he had a strong ambition for military glory as a family patrimony. But he had neither activity nor vigour, nor any experience in war, nor, in lieu of experience, any of those superior qualities of mind which make up for the want of it. He had, as we have also said, taken for his Mentor the worthy and discreet marshal Jourdan, to whose judgment he submitted his military plans, but most frequently without hearkening to his advice; and after long oscillating between the marshal and his familiar councillors, he would make up his mind as he could according to the impressions of the moment.
