This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1916 edition. Excerpt: ... at this time (1916). Mr. Brockman's wife was of German descent and came from one of the oldest and most honored families of Germany. It is appropriate at this time to give a short sketch of a family so well known, and one which has taken such an active part in the development of Piedmont, Virginia. QUISENBERRY. (From Quisenberry Family, by A. C. Quisenberry.) The Quisenberry family of America is descended from Thomas Quisenberry, of England, who settled in Virginia in 1624. He descended from Henrich Von Questenberry, of Cologne, Germany, who became a citizen of England about 1468, and who was of the elder branch of the family of Questenberry at Cologne. Falmes Cologne Berglish Families says: "The Questenbergs or Quisenberrys, a Cologne family, is remarkable, as it rose in three generations from ordinary burghs, to become Barons, Counts, and Imperial Counts." Henrich von Questenberg was the founder of the English branch of the family. He was educated at Cologne University. As a young man he went to England in connection with the Hanseatic interests of his family, and in 1467 married an English girl, Catherine, of Canterbury. For this, which they considered an offense to the family, he was disinherited and expelled from the Hanseatic League. He then became a permanent citizen of England. His son, Augustine Questenberry, married and had four children, as follows: 1. John Questenherrv. of Canterbury, England. 2. Henry, of Leeds, Kent. 3. James, of Leeds, Kent. 4. Thomas. Thomas, the fourth son, was the founder of the American branch of the family. He was born in Bromley, Kent, in 1608, and came to America in 1624. Later he returned to England, where he married a young lady of Canterbury, and with her, returned to Virginia, Westmoreland...

Liberty in Hume’s History of England by N. Capaldi,D. Livingston Pdf

LIBERTY IN HUME'S HISTORY OF ENGLAND In his own lifetime, Hume was feted by his admirers as a great historian, and even his enemies conceded that he was a controversial historian with whom one had to reckon. On the other hand, Hume failed to achieve positive recognition for his philosophical views. It was Hume's History of England that played an influential role in public policy debate during the eighteenth century in both Great Britain and in the United States. Hume's Hist01Y of England passed through seven editions and was beginning to be perceived as a classic before Hume's death. Voltaire, as an historian, considered it "perhaps the best ever written in any lan guage. " Gibbon greatly admired Hume's work and said, of a letter written by Hume in 1776 praising the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, that a compliment from Hume "overpaid the labor of ten years. " After Hume's death on August 20, 1776, the History became a factor in the revolutionary events that began to unfold. Louis XVI was a close student of Hume's History, and his valet records that, upon having learned that the Convention had voted the death penalty, the King asked for the volume in Hume's History covering the trial and execution of Charles I to read in the days that remained. But if Louis XVI found the consolations of philosophical history in the Stuart volumes, Thomas Jefferson saw in them a cause for alarm.
