Excerpt from History of the Massachusetts Daughters of the American Revolution: December, 1891-December, 1905 The debts which we owe to the past, we must needs pay to the future. We live in the past by a knowledge of its history, and in the future by hope and anticipation. In view of these facts we will all agree as to the necessity of recording and preserving the anniversaries of our memo rable events, and setting up the milestones of our history. Senator Dolliver, in his address at the last Continental Congress, said that the D. A. R. In gathering up the frag ments of honor, and glory, and valor, and sacrifice, and pre serving with sacred vigilance the least name among those who were interested in laying the foundations of our national life, had caught the most beautiful idea that had ever entered into the history of this world. Mindful of the injunction to save the memorials of the past, that future generations might not forget, and that the history of the Massachusetts D. A. R. Might be put into tangi ble form for ready reference, early in 1905, a card was sent a; to each chapter in the state, asking for a brief history of the chapter, a condensed account of work done, and pictures of its patron saint or of any tablets or memorials placed. Most of the chapters responded to this appeal, and the result is most gratifying. All the reports have a thrill of life and show splendid progress, and we feel that each chapter in our state is a link in the chain which binds all the chapters of our country into one great harmonious whole. After the Civil War, many Americans did not identify strongly with the concept of a united nation. Francesca Morgan finds the first stirrings of a sense of national patriotism--of "these United States--in the work of black and white clubwomen in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Morgan demonstrates that hundreds of thousands of women in groups such as the Woman's Relief Corps, the National Association of Colored Women, the Universal Negro Improvement Association, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Daughters of the American Revolution sought to produce patriotism on a massive scale in the absence of any national emergency. They created holidays like Confederate Memorial Day, placed American flags in classrooms, funded monuments and historic markers, and preserved old buildings and battlegrounds. Morgan argues that while clubwomen asserted women's importance in cultivating national identity and participating in public life, white groups and black groups did not have the same nation in mind and circumscribed their efforts within the racial boundaries of their time. Presenting a truly national history of these generally understudied groups, Morgan proves that before the government began to show signs of leadership in patriotic projects in the 1930s, women's organizations were the first articulators of American nationalism.

A Life of Albert Pike, originally published in 1997, is as much a study of antebellum Arkansas as it is a portrait of the former general. A native of Massachusetts, Pike settled in Arkansas Territory in 1832 after wandering the Great Plains of Texas and New Mexico for two years. In Arkansas he became a schoolteacher, newspaperman, lawyer, Whig leader, poet, Freemason, and Confederate general who championed secession and fought against Black suffrage.
