The History of the Middle Ages (Classic Reprint) by Victor Duruy Pdf

Excerpt from The History of the Middle Ages This translation is published in the confident belief that it will prove as valuable a book for school use and general reading among us as it has proved itself in France. Care has been taken to distinguish the editor's work from the author's, in both text and notes. Some few omissions have been made from the author's text without notice, chiefly for the purpose of simplifying the narrative, and corrections of dates and of manifest typographical errors have not been marked, but in every case where the author's meaning has been changed the fact is indicated by the use of brackets, and the editor's notes are signed, while theauthor's are left unsigned. In general, the intention has been to confine changes and notes to points of sufficient importance to justify notice, but in a book of this kind it is hardly possible that every statement in need of revision has been detected, and I am conscious to myself of unequal knowledge of the different subjects dealt with. Outlines of the History of the Middle Ages (Classic Reprint) by George T. Manning Pdf

Excerpt from Outlines of the History of the Middle Ages The following pages have been put together, not with a view to supersede the exertions of the Teacher, nor to do away with the labour of the pupil. They are marks set up by the way side, materially to assist both. There is no royal road to the attainment of learning, nor, in fact, to the attainment of anything in life worthy the consideration of an intelligent being. A History of the Middle Ages (Classic Reprint) by Dana Carleton Munro Pdf

Excerpt from A History of the Middle Ages In this text-book three subjects have been emphasized: first, the work of the Christian Church, the greatest of the civilizing agencies; second, the debt which we owe to the Byzantine and Arabic civilizations; third, the life of the times. While endeavoring to subordinate mere facts and dates, I have intended to introduce those with which a pupil should be familiar. It is impossible to name the sources to which I am indebted; as I have formed my opinions gradually, during thirteen years in which I have been engaged in studying and teaching medieval history. In preparing the maps I have profited greatly by the admirable Oxford Historical Atlas of Modern Europe. Dr. A. F. Nightingale, of Chicago, Mr. F. L. Thompson, of New York, and Dr. Caroline Colvin, one of my students, have read the whole manuscript and made many helpful suggestions. Prof. E .H. Castle and Dr. A. C. Howland, of the Teachers College, Dr. E. A. Singer, of Philadelphia, Prof. Wilfred H. Munro, of Brown University, Prof. E. P. Cheyney, and Dr. W. E. Lingelbach, of the University of Pennsylvania, have read one or more chapters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Lectures on the History of the Middle Ages (Classic Reprint) by George Dalrymple Ferguson Pdf

Excerpt from Lectures on the History of the Middle Ages History is essentially a practical study, but it can only be such as we seek to understand the principles which have been the moving prin ciples, and to trace their development. This in deed implies a knowledge of facts, but this know ledge can only be practical as it suggests prob lems which it must be our purpose to analyze and explain. The History of Medieval Europe (Classic Reprint) by Lynn Thorndike Pdf

Excerpt from The History of Medieval Europe This book aims to trace the development of Europe and its civilization, from the decline of the Roman Empire to the opening of the sixteenth century, for the benefit of the college student and the general reader. It is almost needless to say that such a work makes little claim to originality in method and still less in subject-matter, which it has shame lessly borrowed from numerous sources. Indeed, in a book of this sort it is more fitting to apologize for anything new that one says than for following in old and beaten tracks. The author, of course, hopes that without making too radical departures he has introduced some improvement in selection and presentation of material, and that he has made few mistakes of fact and interpretation. The Table of Contents indicates the general plan of the volume, which is to treat medieval Europe as a whole and to hang the story upon a single thread, rather than to recount as distinct narratives the respective histories of France, England, Germany, Italy, and other countries of modem Europe. French or English history may be studied as such in courses and books so labeled. Moreover, the modern interest in the national state has usually been car ried too far in the study of the Middle Ages. Local division, not national unity and central government, is surely the striking feature through most of the medieval centuries. A History of Germany in the Middle Ages (Classic Reprint) by Ernest F. Henderson Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Germany in the Middle Ages It may seem strange that one whose aim and desire is to be considered an American writer, should first launch his adventurous craft on the tide of English popular favour, rather than entrust it to the currents, likely to be more favourable or less dangerous, of his own native depths. This has come about in great part by accident. I happened to be on this side of the ocean when this volume reached its completion, circumstances prevented my return to America, and yet I was eager without delay to try my experiment on the public. For it is an experiment. Apart from the question as to whether or not I am capable of putting life and spirit into the vast body of facts and events that concern the past of so enormous a political creation as Germany, I have been assured from competent side that there is not sufficient interest in the subject to warrant a work like the present. My belief is, that if there is not, there ought to be. Not to speak of the breathlessly exciting incidents of the German Reformation, nor of the proud emancipation of the grand modem empire from the trammels of disunity and disorganization, there is that in the fortunes and misfortunes of a Charlemagne and Henry IV., of a Barbarossa, a Henry VI. and an Emperor Frederick II., which should stir the heart of any observer, no matter what his nationality. The rise and fall of the mediaeval German Empire is in itself a subject boundlessly interesting, boundlessly important. Open your eyes, oh ye students of men and of institutions, and see how Europe has come to be what it is, and how near it came to being something quite different! The Story of the Middle Ages by Samuel Bannister Harding Pdf

Excerpt from The Story of the Middle Ages: An Elementary History for Sixth and Seventh Grades In attempting to make intelligible to children the institutions and events of the Middle Ages, the author is aware of the magnitude of the task which he has essayed. He is, however, firmly of the opinion that the difficulty arises frequently not so much from an inability on the part of the child to grasp the essential ideas underlying medieval relations, as from the lack of a clear understanding of these on the part of the narrator himself, and the need of finding familiar non technical terms of definition. Whether the difficulty has been entirely surmounted in this work can only be determined by the test of use; but at least no pains have been spared in the effort. The Middle Ages, 395-1272 (Classic Reprint) by Dana Carleton Munro Pdf

Excerpt from The Middle Ages, 395-1272 This volume is planned to follow one on Roman history which will carry the story of Rome through the career of Justinian, whose ambition it was to have one state, one church, one law. It is to be followed by a volume on the period of the renaissance and reformation. Its position in the series has determined its scope and the inclusion or exclusion of topics which more logically will find a place in the volume which precedes or the one which follows. The bibliographies for the separate chapters have been made as short as possible. Paetow's Guide to the Study of Medieval History is so excellent that it seems a work of supererogation to attempt to make complete bibliographies again. Consequently, only a few books have been selected, and each one, because it contains some matter necessary to supplement the discussion in this volume. I am indebted to Professor George L. Burr, of Cornell University, the general editor of the series, for reading all the manuscript and making many suggestions for improvements. Several of my former students have helped me; in particular, Professor A. C. Krey of the University of Minnesota, who prepared the maps, bibliographies, and index; Willy Jahr, Ph.D., who read some of the earlier chapters; Professor Frederick Duncalf of the University of Texas, who has helped me in reading proof; these and others I wish to thank. Any mistakes in the book I am responsible for; the number would have been greater except for the generous assistance which I have received. Lastly, I am much indebted to my wife and three daughters for frequent criticism and aid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
