History of the One Hundred and Eighty-Ninth Regiment of New York Volunteers (Classic Reprint) by William H. Rogers Pdf
Excerpt from History of the One Hundred and Eighty-Ninth Regiment of New York Volunteers Only the outline history of a single regiment is here giv en. I have not attempted any account of the philosophical connection and design of the general movements in which my regiment participated, except such as was purely inci dental. I have aimed to gratify their request to give them a souvenir of our experiences during our term of service. The plan that seemed best adapted to this, and to the expense and limits prescribed for the book, was to select and narrate such a suggestive series of events as would cluster, and thus by association revive all the memories of the year. It is hoped any member of the command will find each historical sentence a text from which he may entertain his children and grand-children with stories of his soldier-deeds and suf ferings which otherwise might have fallen into oblivion. Lincoln's Greatest Journey by Noah Andre Trudeau Pdf
From a New York Times–bestselling author, “a vivid account of Lincoln’s sixteen days at the front in Virginia” (James McPherson, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom). March 1865: The United States was at a crossroads and, truth be told, Abraham Lincoln was a sick man. I am very unwell, he confided to a close acquaintance. A vast and terrible civil war was winding down, leaving momentous questions for a war-weary president to address. A timely invitation from Gen. Ulysses S. Grant provided the impetus for an escape to City Point, Virginia, a journey from which Abraham Lincoln drew much more than he ever expected. This book offers the first comprehensive account of a momentous time in his presidency. Lincoln made the trip to escape the constant interruptions in the capital that were draining his vitality, and to make his personal amends for presiding over the most destructive war in American history in order to save the nation. Lincoln returned to Washington sixteen days later with a renewed sense of purpose, urgency, and direction that would fundamentally shape his second-term agenda. This was his longest break from the White House since he had taken office, and until now little has been known about it. Lincoln’s Greatest Journey represents the most extensively researched and detailed story of these decisive sixteen days at City Point, in a narrative laden with many previously unpublished accounts that fill in gaps and clear up misconceptions. A fresh, more complete picture of Lincoln emerges, set against a dramatically new narrative of what really happened during those last weeks of his life.
The Army of the Potomac was a hotbed of political activity during the Civil War. As a source of dissent widely understood as a frustration for Abraham Lincoln, its onetime commander, George B. McClellan, even secured the Democratic nomination for president in 1864. But in this comprehensive reassessment of the army's politics, Zachery A. Fry argues that the war was an intense political education for its common soldiers. Fry examines several key crisis points to show how enlisted men developed political awareness that went beyond personal loyalties. By studying the struggle between Republicans and Democrats for political allegiance among the army's rank and file, Fry reveals how captains, majors, and colonels spurred a pro-Republican political awakening among the enlisted men, culminating in the army's resounding Republican voice in state and national elections in 1864. For decades, historians have been content to view the Army of the Potomac primarily through the prism of its general officer corps, portraying it as an arm of the Democratic Party loyal to McClellan's leadership and legacy. Fry, in contrast, shifts the story's emphasis to resurrect the successful efforts of proadministration junior officers who educated their men on the war's political dynamics and laid the groundwork for Lincoln's victory in 1864.
