The Government of Ohio by Wilbur H. Siebert Pdf

Excerpt from The Government of Ohio: Its History and Administration This book is intended to give in brief compass a comprehensive account of the government of the State of Ohio as it has developed to the present year - the hundredth anniversary of Ohio's admission to Statehood. The plan of treatment conforms in general to that laid down for all the volumes of the series to which this book belongs, but several features have been suggested by the excellent work of Professor W. C. Morey on The Government of New York, which also appears in this series. In accordance with this plan, the growth of the government during the fifteen years of its Territorial life and the hundred years of its life as a State has been treated in Part I (Chapters I and II); the structure of the government has been described in Part II (Chapters III, IV, V, and VI); and the work of the government has been set forth in Part III (Chapters VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, and XII). It will be seen from this arrangement that an effort has been made to lay due stress on the functions of the State, a subject generally slighted despite the fact that these functions are an expression of the will of the people, are performed for the benefit of the people, and constitute the objects for which a modern government exists. Ohio Early State and Local History (Classic Reprint) by Daughters Of The American Revolution Pdf

Excerpt from Ohio Early State and Local History T has been the aim of the Dolly Todd Madison Chapter, in the preparation of this volume, to accomplish something that not only would be of interest to the present, but a heritage to the future. Realizing that much of our early local history had not been written and that the few remaining pioneers of our community who had helped to make that history were rapidly passing, the Programme Committee for the year 1912-1913 concluded that the most useful and inter esting work immediately before the Chapter was that of gathering together and preserving in permanent form, our early unwritten local history. Too long delayed, the task assumed, although pleasant, was not an easy one. To best accomplish it, different subjects covering the historic field, were assigned to the different members chosen for the work. The part the Red Man played in our local history was made the subject of a separate paper. Other papers review the early history and progress of our State, and the important part it has played in the history and development of our Nation. And since this volume has been prepared by a Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, it seems appropriate to include within it, not only the military services rendered our Nation by the Revolutionary ancestors of our Members, but also, in so far as possible, their authentic and traditional family history; and likewise, the lineage of our Members descended from such ancestors. Stories of Ohio (Classic Reprint) by William Dean Howells Pdf

Excerpt from Stories of Ohio In the following stories, drawn from the annals of Ohio, I have tried to possess the reader with a knowledge, in outline at least, of the history of the State from the earliest times. I cannot suppose that I have done this with unfailing accuracy in respect to fact, but with regard to the truth, I am quite sure of my purpose at all times to impart it. The books which have been of most use to me in writing this are the histories of Francis Parkman; the various publications of Messrs. Robert Clarke and Co. in the "Ohio Valley Series"; McClung's "Sketches of Western Adventure"; "Ohio" (in the American Commonwealths Series) by Rufus King; "History and Civil Government of Ohio," by B. A. Hinsdale and Mary Hinsdale; "Beginnings of Literary Culture in the Ohio Valley," by W. H. Venable; Theodore Roosevelt's "Winning of the West"; Whitelaw Reid's "Ohio in the War"; and above all others, the delightful and inexhaustible volumes of Henry Howe's "Historical Collections of Ohio." The Story of Ohio (Classic Reprint) by Alexander Black Pdf

Excerpt from The Story of Ohio The beginnings of Ohio were the beginnings of the great Northwest. From it grew the majestic group of States now lying at the heart of the Republic. The famous ordinance of 1787, by which the Northwest Territory was established, and dedicated to freedom, and which is not extravagantly described as one of the three title deeds of American constitutional liberty, was first expounded and applied by the pioneers of Ohio, who guarded its honor with zealous patriotism, cherishing the covenant as a guarantee of political progress and moral success. The Government of the People, of the State of Ohio (Classic Reprint) by George Wells Knight Pdf

Excerpt from The Government of the People, of the State of Ohio 1. A State is a body of persons living within a definite territory, and united under a permanent organization and common laws in order to promote their mutual safety and welfare. In thinking of a State four things must be considered: (1) A group of people (2) occupying a special tract of land, and (3) regulated in their relations to one another, and in their use and enjoyment of that land, by laws (4) made and enforced in accordance with a definite plan known as the constitution. The civil government of any State has to do with the people, the land, and the framing and operation of the constitution and laws. A History and Description of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (Classic Reprint) by W. P. Smith Pdf

Excerpt from A History and Description of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad In presenting to the public this brief historical sketch and compendium of facts relating to the diversified career of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road Company, - from the period of its first organization in 1827, to its completion in 1853, - the author has been influenced solely by a desire to place on record a comprehensive narrative of events, redounding to the honor of the State of Maryland and the City of Baltimore, and reflecting immortal credit upon the intelligence, perseverance, and unflagging energy of those alike who originated, perfected, and have carried to a successful issue this great national enterprise. Maryland has the honor of having been the first State in the Union to incorporate a Company for the construction of a Rail Road, - she was also the first to devote the public resources to the support of the system, - "a system that has given to the people of the United States, an identity of feeling, a harmony of interests, and a facility of social intercourse which has bound them together as one great family." Maryland may now also boast of having completed one of the longest and most magnificent Rail Roads in the world, and although more limited in her territory than many of her sister States, she has thus secured the most direct channel through which the interchange of commodities and travel, between the Eastern and the Western States, will be mainly carried on, and which will elevate her chief City still higher in wealth, commercial activity, and national importance. Financial History of Ohio (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Ludlow Bogart Pdf

Excerpt from Financial History of Ohio This work was begun some years ago at Oberlin Col lege; laid aside for more pressing duties, it has since been carried to completion, at odd intervals and for the most part at a distance from Ohio. For some of the short comings this may be held responsible. It is based almost exclusively upon official sources; these had remained prae tically unused in other publications relating to the state, and upon the latter therefore little reliance has been placed. In the present monograph two chapters, dealing respec tively with Internal Improvements and Local Finance, were omitted because of limitations of space; but it is hoped they may be published at some future time. A History of the State Debt of Ohio has already appeared in the Journal of Political Economy, April, May, June, 1911. Thanks are due the editor of the American Economic Review for permission to reprint part of an article entitled Recent Economic Reforms in Ohio, which appeared in September, 1911; and to the editor of the American His torical Review, for permission to reprint a part of the article Taxation of the Second Bank of the United States by Ohio, which appeared in January, 1912.
