Excerpt from History of the Town of Harvard Massachusetts: 1732-1893 My Dear Sir: - For many years it has been my ardent desire to see written a history of Harvard - my native town - beginning with the period when the Indians first saw the smoke ascending from the hearth-fires of the white men in the Nashaway Valley and coming down to modern times. In no part of our country were the pioneers beset by greater trials, toil and danger than in New England; and probably none suffered more than those who lived within sight of Wachusett. The little colony at Lancaster was for many years constantly menaced by savage foes, and as the larger portion of Harvard was originally included in Lancaster, she shared the same experiences. The tale of the perils and sacrifices and the many thrilling incidents in the lives of her founders should be so woven into the story that the student may readily comprehend what hardships the brave men and women of that day endured, to secure for themselves and their posterity civil and religious liberty and the many blessings which attach to home in a civilized land. The town of Harvard was made up of sundry tracts from other towns, and if these can be so mapped as to represent the manner of their combination into the present harmonious whole, it would be "a consummation devoutly to be wished." Compelling, in-depth analysis of Shaker villages that sheds light on how communal attitudes helped to liberate Shaker women. Drawing on archival material from Shaker members, observers, and apostates, noted historian Suzanne R. Thurman offers a scholarly yet eminently readable study of life in two of the oldest, most prominent American Shaker villages: the Harvard and Shirley communities of Massachusetts. Even as she delves into the complex fabric of Shaker social life, Thurman challenges traditional perceptions of gender roles within the community. Shaker spiritual and social ethics, she points out, strongly favored women. Celibacy and an androgynous theology, for instance, allowed androgynous social roles to evolve. Another key factor was the lively arena of nineteenth-century reformers and intellectuals in nearby Boston. With admirable detail, Thurman documents the relationship that grew between these forward thinkers and the Believers. Their influence, she argues, enlightened Shaker consciousness and empowered their women of Harvard and Shirley with opportunities denied them in the world at large. The author also explores links, particularly economic, between Shakers and the greater American society. Treating Harvard and Shirley Believers as an idiosyncratic part of the nation rather than a fringe group, Thurman sheds new light on their constant struggle to be in the world but not of it.

Making Slavery History focuses on how commemorative practices and historical arguments about the American Revolution set the course for antislavery politics in the nineteenth century. The particular setting is a time and place in which people were hyperconscious of their roles as historical actors and narrators: Massachusetts in the period between the Revolution and the Civil War. This book shows how local abolitionists, both black and white, drew on their state's Revolutionary heritage to mobilize public opposition to Southern slavery. When it came to securing the citizenship of free people of color within the Commonwealth, though, black and white abolitionists diverged in terms of how they idealized black historical agency. Although it is often claimed that slavery in New England is a history long concealed, Making Slavery History finds it hidden in plain sight. From memories of Phillis Wheatley and Crispus Attucks to representations of black men at the Battle of Bunker Hill, evidence of the local history of slavery cropped up repeatedly in early national Massachusetts. In fixing attention on these seemingly marginal presences, this book demonstrates that slavery was unavoidably entangled in the commemorative culture of the early republic-even in a place that touted itself as the "cradle of liberty." Transcending the particular contexts of Massachusetts and the early American republic, this book is centrally concerned with the relationship between two ways of making history, through social and political transformation on the one hand and through commemoration, narration, and representation on the other.
