The American Standard Version is a classic text for digging into the depths of God's Word. The complete Bible, first published in 1901, has been used since that time to seek a full understanding of Scripture. The Version sought-and greatly achieved-a literal translation of the original languages into American English. Because the translation is so literal, it has been treasured as a tool for understanding God's original intent by those who do not read Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.
For decades, scholars have referred to the American Standard Version as the "rock of Biblical honesty," and have held convictions that "interest in it should be renewed and increased, with the chief inducement being its recognized value which deserves and demands perpetuation." Like our ASV predecessors, the Refreshed ASV is resolutely committed to the Formal Equivalence translation philosophy, and has endeavored to handle the English text with both deference and reserve, intending this standard ought merely to be refreshed, rather than revised, or replaced. Changes made to the ASV within the limited scope of the refreshing of the English text include archaic personal pronouns (i.e. thee, thou, thine, thy, thyself, ye), archaic verb terminations (i.e. -est, -st, -th), and antiquated vocabulary, spelling, and grammar resulting from semantic shift. It’s with this goal in mind that the Literal Standard Version (LSV) was written—a modern, yet literal English translation based upon the most prolific texts: the Masoretic Text (MT) for the Old Testament and the Textus Receptus (TR) and Majority Text (M) for the New. However, in certain, specific instances other manuscript versions and text-types are used where the evidence seems incontrovertible (e.g., the LXX and DSS in the Hebrew and Aramaic; the Alexandrian in the Greek). ANOTHER TRANSLATION, WHY? There have been a slew of new English translations in the past half-century, which may cause some to wonder why the need for another. The translators agree with the premise that different translations can serve different demographics and different reading levels to maximize exposure to God’s word. In this sense, the LSV is not a competitor to other excellent translations, but is complimentary. As the most literal modern English translation, the LSV is an excellent resource for deep and thoughtful Bible study and research, essentially an interlinear in terms of word-for-word translation, but arranged with English sentence structure.

The American Standard Version of the Holy Bible is rooted in the work begun in 1870 to revise the King James Bible of 1611. This revision project had a wide-ranging impact on the translation of the Holy Scriptures into the English language, having eventually produced the Revised Standard Version of 1971, the Amplified Bible of 1965, the New American Standard Bible of 1995 and the Recovery Version of 1999. A fifth revision, known as the World English Bible, was published in 2000. The American Standard Version was also the basis for Kenneth N. Taylor's Bible paraphrase, The Living Bible of 1971.
