Excerpt from Homer and His Age The unity of the Epics is not so important a topic as the methods of criticism. They ought to be sober, logical, and self-consistent. When these qualities are absent, Homeric criticism may be described, in the recent words of Blass, as a swamp haunted by wan dering fires, will 0' the wisps. The Age of Homer (Classic Reprint) by Hodder Michael Westropp Pdf

Excerpt from The Age of Homer Mr. Paley and Mr. Sayce have put forward their views with regard to the late age of the Homeric poems (that is, of the texts of the Iliad and the Odyssey as we now have them) from a critical examination of their language. I would here wish to express in a few notes my further doubts with regard to the early date of the Homeric poems founded on the knowledge they evince of the art of a late date. Before discussing the date of the art as it appears in the poems, I shall endeavour to point out some evidences of the rudeness and imperfection of Greek civilization and language in the seventh century, about a century and a half after the supposed date of Homer. I must in the first place confess myself a thorough sceptic with regard to the early date usually assigned to the Iliad in its present form, and I accept the theories so convincingly put forward by Mr. Paley. The mythology, the art and science, the language appear far too advanced for an early period of literature. The mythology is too grand; the conceptions too magnificent for that period; the archaisms seem too often unreal, imitative and affected; besides, the arts which would have been required to carry out the conception of the Shield of Achilles would have been enough to task the genius of a Phidias. From what we know of the rudeness of Greek art in the seventh and sixth centuries B. C., there is every reason to believe About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Iliad and The Odyssey + Homer and His Age by Homer,Andrew Lang Pdf

This carefully crafted ebook: “The Iliad and The Odyssey + Homer and His Age” contains 2 books in one volume and is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Iliad and the Odyssey are two epic poems written by Homer around the 9th century BC. They are two of the oldest recorded written works in history. The Iliad deals with a ten-year war between the Greeks and Trojans, called the Siege of Troy. It centers around Achilles, the great Greek hero who was dipped in the river Styx when he was young and whose only weak spot was his heel. He was killed when Apollo helped one of his enemies shoot an arrow into his heel. The Odyssey is about Odysseus´s voyage from the war back home to Ithaca, which took another 10 years. Homer (around the 9th century BC) is the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, and is revered as the greatest of ancient Greek epic poets. Homer's works, which are about fifty percent speeches, provided models in persuasive speaking and writing that were emulated throughout the ancient and medieval Greek worlds. Homer and His Age by Andrew Lang was written in 1906. Lang was highly regarded as a Homeric scholar and Homer and His Age is one of the works he contributed to this area of study. Table of contents: Preface; The Homeric Age; Hypotheses as to the Growth of the Epics; Hypotheses of Epic Composition; Loose Feudalism: The Over-Lord in “Iliad,” Books I. and II.; Agamemnon in the Later “Iliad”; Archaeology of the “Iliad”. Burial and Cremation; Homeric Armour; The Breastplate; Bronze and Iron; The Homeric House; Notes of Change in the “Odyssey”; Linguistic Proofs of Various Dates; The “Doloneia”; The Interpolations of Nestor; The Comparative Study of Early Epics; Homer and the French Mediaeval Epics; Conclusion. Andrew Lang (1844 – 1912) was a Scots poet, novelist, literary critic, and contributor to the field of anthropology. While best known for his translations of classical literature and as a collector of folk and fairy tales, Lang also wrote poetry, biographies, histories, novels, literary criticisms and even children's books.

Homer and His Age by Andrew Lang Pdf

In Homer and the Epic, ten or twelve years ago, I examined the literary objections to Homeric unity. These objections are chiefly based on alleged discrepancies in the narrative, of which no one poet, it is supposed, could have been guilty. The critics repose, I venture to think, mainly on a fallacy. We may style it the fallacy of "the analytical reader." The poet is expected to satisfy a minutely critical reader, a personage whom he could not foresee, and whom he did not address. Nor are "contradictory instances" examinedÑthat is, as Blass has recently reminded his countrymen, Homer is put to a test which Goethe could not endure. No long fictitious narrative can satisfy "the analytical reader." The fallacy is that of disregarding the Homeric poet's audience. He did not sing for Aristotle or for Aristarchus, or for modern minute and reflective inquirers, but for warriors and ladies. He certainly satisfied them; but if he does not satisfy microscopic professors, he is described as a syndicate of many minstrels, living in many ages. In the present volume little is said in defence of the poet's consistency. Several chapters on that point have been excised. The way of living which Homer describes is examined, and an effort is made to prove that he depicts the life of a single brief age of culture. The investigation is compelled to a tedious minuteness, because the points of attackÑthe alleged discrepancies in descriptions of the various details of existenceÑare so minute as to be all but invisible. The unity of the Epics is not so important a topic as the methods of criticism. They ought to be sober, logical, and self-consistent. When these qualities are absent, Homeric criticism may be described, in the recent words of Blass, as "a swamp haunted by wandering fires, will o' the wisps."

Homer and His Age by Andrew Lang Pdf

Excerpt: Now to any one who knows early national poetry, early uncritical art of any kind, this theory seems not easily tenable. The difficulty of the theory is increased, if we suppose that the Achaeans were the recent conquerors of the Mycenaeans. Whether we regard the Achaeans as "Celts," with Mr. Ridgeway, victors over an Aryan people, the Pelasgic Mycenaeans; or whether, with Mr. Hall, we think that the Achaeans were the Aryan conquerors of a non-Aryan people, the makers of the Mycenaean civilisation; in the stress of a conquest, followed at no long interval by an expulsion at the hands of Dorian invaders, there would be little thought of archaising among Achaean poets.
