Homeschooling in the 21st Century by Robert Maranto,Debra A. Bell Pdf

Education began on the most intimate levels: the family and the community. With industrialization, education became professionalized and bureaucratized, typically conducted in schools rather than homes. Over the past half century, however, schooling has increasingly returned home, both in the United States and across the globe. This reflects several trends, including greater affluence and smaller family size leading parents to focus more on child well-being; declining faith in professionals (including educators); and the Internet, whose resources facilitate home education. In the United States, students who are homeschooled for at least part of their childhood outnumber those in charter schools. Yet remarkably little research addresses homeschooling. This book brings together work from 20 researchers, addressing a range of homeschooling topics, including the evolving legal and institutional frameworks behind home education; why some parents make this choice; home education educational environments; special education; and outcomes regarding both academic achievement and political tolerance. In short, this book offers the most up-to-date research to guide policy makers and home educators, a matter of great importance given the agenda of the current presidential administration. The chapters in this book were originally published as articles in the Journal of School Choice.

Global Perspectives on Home Education in the 21st Century by English, Rebecca Pdf

Home education is the fastest growing educational movement in the world, yet the research remains limited on why and how it has become so popular. As more and more families seek to homeschool, it is imperative that further studies are undertaken to understand how students’ lives are impacted, as well as the challenges and opportunities that arise from this method of schooling. Global Perspectives on Home Education in the 21st Century is an edited collection that focuses on the major factors behind the global rise of the home education movement and explores many of the current issues faced in relation to homeschooling. The book examines key themes that include parents’ and children’s experiences of home education, how and why families choose to home educate, and what happens to home educated children once they are finished. Including topics such as unschooling, self-directed learning, willed learning, and holistic education, this book is primarily intended for home educators, school administrators, policymakers, researchers, academicians, and students.

Homeschooling: A Path Rediscovered for Socialization, Education, and Family by Amy Schechter Vahid,Frank Vahid Pdf

Although the percentage of homeschooled U.S. students is 2% and growing, widespread misconceptions persist. Neighbors and relatives wonder if homeschoolers will be properly socialized and learn to live in the real world, teachers and administrators doubt that quality education can be achieved, and parents fear that homeschooling would be too hard. This book explains why homeschooling can be a great path for socializing a child and for excelling academically in a 21st century world, why homeschooling is easier than most people think, and how homeschooling can lead to the tranquil close family life many people seek. The book is written in a rational non-confrontational manner, ideally suited for homeschoolers to give to family and friends to inform them of the rationale for choosing this path of raising a child. It is also well-suited for teachers, administrators, journalists, and government officials who wish to learn more about this important educational approach.

Thriving in the 21st Century by Barbara Frank Pdf

Today's children will reach adulthood in an economic environment unlike anything the world has ever seen. The 21st century global economy is powered by an increasing rate of technological change as well as growing foreign competition; both are contributing to the high U.S. unemployment rate and stagnating American wages. How can we as parents prepare our children for success in this growing maelstrom that many are now calling "the new normal"? In "Thriving in the 21st Century: Preparing Our Children for the New Economic Reality," Barbara Frank demonstrates that we must move beyond the common wisdom of the 20th century that emphasized a college diploma and lifelong employment with a large company as the only way to success. Instead, we need to set our children on a new path, one that will help them not just survive, but thrive in the 21st century. In this book, you'll learn: The Seven Strengths your child will need to prosper in the 21st century, why they're needed and how you can develop them in your children The most efficient (and increasingly popular) way to give your child those Seven Strengths Why public education has failed to prepare our children for the 21st century How we can help our children become the lifelong learners needed in a rapidly changing global economy The surprising truth about today's colleges and universities How economic change is affecting a variety of career areas, and which of them are projected to grow dramatically in the coming years. This book is packed with ideas and resources for raising our children to become adults who respond proactively when faced with economic challenges, and who can prosper during times of great change. We can help our children reach young adulthood ready and able to tackle the future with all its challenges. And that, of course, is the key: we must prepare our children for the future...not the past.
