Luke by Arthur Just Jr.,Thomas C. Oden Pdf

For the church fathers the Gospels did not serve as resources for individual analysis and academic study. They were read and heard and interpreted within the worshiping community. They served as sources for pastoral counsel and admonition for those who were committed to the Way. Although Matthew and John were generally the preferred Gospels, Luke, because of his particular interests and unique contributions, took pride of place during the Christmas season as well as during Easter and other major feasts. During the early patristic period, the tradition of continuous reading (lectio continua) through the Gospels developed, such that over a course of time a complete Gospel was read in sections, and sermons were preached on the readings either at weekly or midweek worship and Communion liturgies or during morning and evening prayer services. Among such sermons that have survived, this commentary includes selections from Origen and Cyril of Alexandria. Aside from sermons, we find that the fathers addressed exegetical issues in theological treatises, pastoral letters and catechetical lectures. Among these, as in other ACCS volumes, readers will find materials ranging from East to West and from the first to the eighth centuries. Among well-known fathers cited are Ambrose, Athanasius, Augustine, the Cappadocians, John Chrysostom, John of Damascus and Bede the Venerable. Among lesser-known fathers are John Cassian, Philoxenus of Mabbug and Theophylact. This volume, edited by Arthur A. Just, opens up a treasure house of ancient wisdom that allows these faithful witnesses, some appearing here in English translation for the first time, to speak with eloquence and intellectual acumen to the church today.

61 Minutes by Michael W. Rothan Pdf

This book is the fruit of holy hours and meditations on the readings for Sunday Mass throughout the year. The author journeys with us on the road to Jerusalem. The journey of Christ is one of prayer and compassion for the poor, the lowly, the marginalized. The Evangelist's narrative is like a diary of a love story between a son and a Prodigal Father. The author walks with Jesus as one of the disciples, trying to answer the question that is the center of the Gospel: "Who do you say that I am?"

Luke Alive by Robert Blair Pdf

"Do you feel as though God favors you? That He is on your side? That He is always with you?" These are the questions Robert Blair asks in the first of 13 sermons in Luke Alive, Volume 1. They cut straight to the Christian heart. They address our greatest fear: that we might not be good enough for God.That we might not enjoy his favor. Blair does not stop short at dismissing our fears with a casual overview of grace. He addresses where they come from, a natural drive to earn favor, to work toward something we can never fully attain ourselves. The Gospel of Luke shows us what we can "earn" with our actions and what we can't. In Mary, the Mother of Jesus we have an image of what it means to be chosen, to be given the Lord's favor. In Jesus' proclamation of the year of the Lord's favor at Nazareth we see that, favored as we may be, there is a kind of favor we can earn when we seize the opportunity. In the story of Jesus and his disciples picking grain on the Sabbath we learn that we do not earn favor by following rules. That's when it gets really exciting. Luke Alive guides ministers through our deepest of Christian fears and desires, and offers satisfying answers based firmly in scripture. It is a must-have volume for pastors seeking to answer direct questions with plain language, whether from the pulpit or the living room couch. Sermon titles include: One: "The angel's Nazareth mission" (Luke 1:26-38) Two: "Will you enjoy the year of the Lord's favor?" (Luke 4:14-21) Three: "Does Sunday equal the Sabbath?" (Luke 6:1-11) Robert Blair pastored the Church of Christ in Hollywood, California for 28 years. A graduate of Pepperdine University (B.A., M.A.), Blair now resides in Cleghorn, Iowa. His writings have appeared in Leadership and Leadership Handbooks of Practical Theology.
