Honor Knows No Borders by John Sharer Pdf

A dangerous and often fatal pursuit, collecting pieces of bombs is a prime activity for boys in London during WWII in the early 1940s. Young Tom Sloan is no exception. While investigating one ravaged building, he finds more than he expects—an injured German pilot, Hauptman Heinrich Leuzinger, who had ejected from his plane. Leuzinger begs Tom not to turn him in to authorities, but rather to help him see his wife and children again. Tom understands this is a dangerous dilemma for which there could be serious consequences. More than a thousand miles away in the North African desert, the boy’s father, Major Bernie Sloan, a British officer and the commandant of a German and Italian POW camp, meets captured German Colonel Hans Dieter Reichmann who tells an unbelievable story. Sloan, a Jewish man, harbors a deep hatred for Germany and its people. Sloan finds it difficult to believe that Reichmann may have actually saved a Jewish family by smuggling them out of Germany. Both father and son are about to discover that in war, as in life, things are not always as they appear, and people can’t always be judged by the uniforms they wear. Or can they?

A poetry collection for young adults brings together some of the most compelling and vibrant voices today reflecting the experiences of teen immigrants and refugees. With authenticity, integrity, and insight, this collection of poems addresses the many issues confronting first- and second- generation young adult immigrants and refugees, such as cultural and language differences, homesickness, social exclusion, human rights, racism, stereotyping, and questions of identity. Poems by Elizabeth Acevedo, Erika L. Sánchez, Samira Ahmed, Chen Chen, Ocean Vuong, Fatimah Asghar, Carlos Andrés Gómez, Bao Phi, Kaveh Akbar, Hala Alyan, and Ada Limón, among others, encourage readers to honor their roots as well as explore new paths, offering empathy and hope for those who are struggling to overcome discrimination. Many of the struggles immigrant and refugee teens face head-on are also experienced by young people everywhere as they contend with isolation, self-doubt, confusion, and emotional dislocation. Ink Knows No Borders is the first book of its kind and features 65 poems and a foreword by poet Javier Zamora, who crossed the border, unaccompanied, at the age of nine, and an afterword by Emtithal Mahmoud, World Poetry Slam Champion and Honorary Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Brief biographies of the poets are included, as well. It's a hopeful, beautiful, and meaningful book for any reader.

Honour Redeemed by David Donachie Pdf

The second volume in the Markham of the Marines trilogy With his fiery Irish blood and well-known reputation for trouble, Lieutenant George Markham leads his embattled Royal Marines against the French in Corsica. His mission: to seize the island. His problem: not just the French, but also spies, traitors, and jealous rivals—including jealous husbands. As the bastard son of a Catholic father and a Protestant mother, Markham has a lot to prove. But as a scarred veteran of the war in America and against the French, Markham is battle-hardened in a way too many of his senior officers aren't. His hardness wins over his men, and with their help Markham ventures across the island to persuade the veteran war hero Pasquali Paoli to unite the Corsicans behind him. But their loyalty remains torn by a heritage of vendettas, French bribery, and crossing and double-crossing. Enemies abound, in both French blue and British red, and the only men Markham can rely on are the grim, taciturn Sergeant Rannoch and a man who owes Markham his life: Bellamy, the educated, Black Marine. Brimming with violent action and an energetic, pulsating plot, Honour Redeemed is a worthy successor to A Shred of Honour in the gripping Markham of the Marines series.

Science Has No National Borders by Hideo Yoshikawa,Joanne Kauffman Pdf

Science Has No National Borders unfolds the fascinating account of the American scientist, Harry C. Kelly, who was central to the United States' contribution to the reconstruction of postwar Japan's science and engineering community. Charged with developing a sound and wise policy during the occupation, he tackled such significant and timeless issues as the relationship between government and scholars and the balance between academic freedom and state power. In the aftermath of World War II, from 1945 through 1952, U.S. military forces occupied Japan. The Americans who served as liaison officers during this time were faced with the task of forging alliances with former enemies so as to transform and revitalize Japan's institutions while paying close attention to American interests and concerns. Nowhere was the need for this delicate balance more evident than in the reconstruction of Japanese science and the reintegration of Japanese scientists into the global community of scholars. Kelly, a physicist in his late thirties, arrived in Japan with little idea of his mission and virtually no knowledge of Japan's culture, society, or language. What he did bring, in addition to his scientific training, was a humanistic vision of the scientific endeavor that extended beyond national borders and politics. By the time he left, he had won the respect and friendship of many Japanese scientists, and in 1969 the government awarded him the highest honor it confers on someone who is not Japanese. Kelly's work remains significant for today's scientists who must continue to seek mutual trust and support at a time when the strength of U.S.-Japanese relations is being challenged more than at any time since the end of World War II.
