Gluttony and Gratitude by Emily E. Stelzer Pdf

Despite the persistence and popularity of addressing the theme of eating in Paradise Lost, the tradition of Adam and Eve’s sin as one of gluttony—and the evidence for Milton’s adaptation of this tradition—has been either unnoticed or suppressed. Emily Stelzer provides the first book-length work on the philosophical significance of gluttony in this poem, arguing that a complex understanding of gluttony and of ideal, grateful, and gracious eating informs the content of Milton’s writing. Working with contextual material in the fields of physiology, philosophy, theology, and literature and building on recent scholarship on Milton’s experience of and knowledge about matter and the body, Stelzer draws connections between Milton’s work and both underexamined textual influences (including, for example, Gower’s Confessio Amantis) and well-recognized ones (such as Augustine’s City of God and Galen’s On the Natural Faculties).

The Highlands of West Papua by Marthen Yadlogon Medlama Pdf

West Papua hardly ever makes the news in the country where I live, New Zealand. When it does, it is generally for unhappy reasons. As I was putting the finishing touches on my edit of Marthen Medlama’s manuscript, there was a report on our national radio station of seven young West Papuans being arrested on the very serious charge of treason for waving the Morning Star flag and for shouting in favour of West Papuan independence. As I listened, thanks to this book, I felt I understood. We are in a phase of history where much of the world is acknowledging and atoning for the sins of colonialism. Yet parts of the world have not finished with colonising. For better or for worse — so far, for the West Papuans, for the worse — the Dutch territories on New Guinea Island were handed to Indonesia in a backroom deal brokered by the US in the 1960s. It can hardly be a coincidence that even before the ink was dry, American interests were joining with the Indonesian government to exploit the vast mineral resources of West Papua. So, while most former colonial powers are wringing their hands over their self-interested exploitation of their sometime colonies and the terrible harm done, they are turning a blind eye as the same wrong is perpetrated in the present day. It is past time for the world to start paying attention to what is happening in West Papua.

Byron, Sully, and the Power of Portraiture by John Clubbe Pdf

First published in 2005. Since the early nineteenth century, Byron, the man and his image, have captured the hearts and minds of untold legions of people of all political and social stripes in Britain, Europe, America, and around the world. This book focuses on the history and cultural significance for Federal America of the only portrait of Byron known to have been painted by a major artist. In private hands from 1826 until this day, Thomas Sulley’s Byron has never before been the subject of scholarly study. Beginning with the discovery of the portrait in 1999 and a 200-year narrative of the portrait’s provenance and its relation to other well-known Byron portraits, the author discusses the work within the broad context of British and American portraiture of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand Pdf

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE • Look for special features inside. Join the Random House Reader’s Circle for author chats and more. In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. Appearing in paperback for the first time—with twenty arresting new photos and an extensive Q&A with the author—Unbroken is an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit, brought vividly to life by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand. Historical and Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Hope by Steven C. van den Heuvel Pdf

This open access volume makes an important contribution to the ongoing research on hope theory by combining insights from both its long history and its increasing multi-disciplinarity. In the first part, it recognizes the importance of the centuries-old reflection on hope by offering historical perspectives and tracing it back to ancient Greek philosophy. At the same time, it provides novel perspectives on often-overlooked historical theories and developments and challenges established views. The second part of the volume documents the state of the art of current research in hope across eight disciplines, which are philosophy, theology, psychology, economy, sociology, health studies, ecology, and development studies. Taken together, this volume provides an integrated view on hope as a multi-faced phenomenon. It contributes to the further understanding of hope as an essential human capacity, with the possibility of transforming our human societies.

Liar: Based On A True Story by Bernadette Botz Pdf

An allegory based on a true story; Liar is about a kingdom caught in the struggle for truth. Opposing voices battle for the souls of the villagers. The Blessing, which brings peace and comfort, and Liar, who brings contempt and shame. "Weak. Ugly. Unwanted. Impossible to Love." Liar's words - thorns filled with poison, find their mark. Sinking under the weight of Liar's tyranny, the villagers begin to lose hope. Change finally comes when a daring young man - an orphan ironically named 'Prince' - comes to their rescue. Standing before the King with courage and vulnerability, Prince reveals what the poisonous thorns of Liar have done to him. When he finds that the King does not reject him, and the woman he rescued is not repulsed by him; Prince finds his courage. Determined the villagers must all be set free; Prince risks his life to expose Liar for who he is - a thief to the still small voice of The Blessing. There was The Liar. There was The Blessing. The kingdom was aptly named¿ Struggle. In a culture that is increasingly isolating, Liar is relevant to this age because it reveals our need for safe and authentic connection. It teaches the strength in becoming vulnerable, the value of authentic friendship, and the need for truth in our day. Using characters that embody kindness and courage, Liar exposes the enemy of our souls and points the way to freedom.

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski Pdf

“A novelistic mosaic that simultaneously reads like a thriller and like a strange, dreamlike excursion into the subconscious.” —The New York Times Years ago, when House of Leaves was first being passed around, it was nothing more than a badly bundled heap of paper, parts of which would occasionally surface on the Internet. No one could have anticipated the small but devoted following this terrifying story would soon command. Starting with an odd assortment of marginalized youth -- musicians, tattoo artists, programmers, strippers, environmentalists, and adrenaline junkies -- the book eventually made its way into the hands of older generations, who not only found themselves in those strangely arranged pages but also discovered a way back into the lives of their estranged children. Now this astonishing novel is made available in book form, complete with the original colored words, vertical footnotes, and second and third appendices. The story remains unchanged, focusing on a young family that moves into a small home on Ash Tree Lane where they discover something is terribly wrong: their house is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Of course, neither Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Will Navidson nor his companion Karen Green was prepared to face the consequences of that impossibility, until the day their two little children wandered off and their voices eerily began to return another story -- of creature darkness, of an ever-growing abyss behind a closet door, and of that unholy growl which soon enough would tear through their walls and consume all their dreams.
