A Life Worth Living/A Cause Worth Dying For by Richard A. Lotspeich Pdf

In America today, somewhere between 80 to 90 percent of adults claim to be Christian. However, when asked specific, detailed questions about the essential tenets of the faith, only 8 to 9 percent actually hold a biblical Christian worldview. The rest are cultural Christians whose faith is shaped more by the American culture than an actual understanding of the teachings of Jesus. I was once one of those cultural Christians until I was challenged to read the Bible and see for myself what it really says about following Jesus. This book is the result of that effort.

Pride in the Projects by Nancy L. Deutsch Pdf

Based on four years of field work with both the adolescent members and staff of an inner-city youth organization in a large mid-western city, Pride in the Projects examines the construction of identity as it occurs within teens' local contexts, emphasizing the relationships within which identities are formed. Drawing on research in psychology, sociology, education, and race and gender studies, the volume highlights the inadequacies in current identity development theories, expanding our understanding of the lives of urban teens and the ways in which interpersonal connections serve as powerful contexts for self-construction. The book closes with implications for practice, alerting scholars, educators, practitioners, and concerned citizens of the positive developmental possibilities when we pay attention to the voices of the youth.

Motivation in Organisations by Manuel Guillen Pdf

Motivation in Organisations: Searching for a Meaningful Work-Life Balance extends the current motivation models in business education to include motives of human behaviour that have been neglected for decades. It debunks some of the myths about human motivation (self-interest as the dominant factor, amorality and non-spirituality) and explains why this approach to teaching business is erroneous and leads to wrong and harmful practices in many organisations. In a very personal and engaging style, the author presents a "map of motivations", based on a humanistic approach to management. This includes the latest findings of Abraham H. Maslow supported by sound philosophical reflections and modern research. He also presents specific ways of putting the framework into practice, sharing stories from students and professionals of how this framework has helped them better understand their own motivations and look at their daily work in a much more meaningful way. The book is highly relevant to students and researchers in humanistic management, people management, organisational behaviour, business ethics, corporate social responsibility and sustainability. In short, this text will be truly inspiring to anyone who wants to reflect on motivations in organisations and how to achieve a better work-life balance.

J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert E. Howard and the Birth of Modern Fantasy by Deke Parsons Pdf

The birth of modern fantasy in 1930s Britain and America saw the development of new literary and film genres. J.R.R. Tolkien created modern fantasy with The Lord of the Rings, set in a fictional world based upon his life in the early 20th century British Empire, and his love of language and medieval literature. In small-town Texas, Robert E. Howard pounded out his own fantasy realm in his Conan stories, published serially in the ephemeral pulp magazines he loved. Jerry Siegel created Superman with Joe Shuster, and laid the foundation for perhaps the most far-reaching fantasy worlds: the universe of DC and Marvel comics. The work of extraordinary people who lived in an extraordinary decade, this modern fantasy canon still provides source material for the most successful literary and film franchises of the 21st century. Modern fantasy speaks to the human experience and still shows its origins from the lives and times of its creators.

Depression - Out of the Darkness and Into the Light by W. Daniel Hale Pdf

The need for churches and other faith communities to reach out and care for those suffering with depression has never been greater. Depression is now recognized as one of our most serious public health concerns. Each year more than ten percent of American adults experience a major depressive episode, and more than twenty percent will experience at least one episode over their lifetime. Furthermore, we know that depression is the major risk factor for suicide, now the second leading cause of death in the 10 – 34 year old age group and the fourth leading cause of death among adults ages 35 – 54. We also know that depression is a significant risk factor for substance abuse, another of our most serious health concerns. While we might want to believe that our religious faith can protect us from depression and suicide, we know that’s not true. We have heard too many stories of religious leaders and members of deeply religious families who have suffered from depression and taken their own lives. We need to recognize that no group is exempt from this terrible illness. Depression is found among the young and old, the religious and nonreligious, and all ethnic and racial groups. In Depression - Out of the Darkness and Into the Light, Dan Hale, a psychologist and national leader in health ministries, draws on his own his own struggles with depression, his work as a psychotherapist, and his experiences as a father who lost a daughter to depression, to offer guidance for individuals and families impacted by depression and for congregations that recognize the importance of ministering to those suffering from this terrible illness.

From Loner to Leader by Jasmine Marie Gladney Pdf

If you're going through life feeling and thinking no one cares or understands you or you're having difficulty forgiving others for all the pain and hurt they've caused you, reading my story will help you see that you're not the only one out there and that if I can be healed and restored then so can you. If you were like me I tried to think ahead and analyze the situation. I was always trying to figure out how someone else thought about me or felt. BIG MISTAKE! You can't go through life with this problem. Otherwise, you'll always be trying to live your life for other people instead of yourself. Living saved can be hard for anyone no matter your age or experiences. I had to overcome many things because of choices I made and the way I felt inside of my own thoughts. My mind allowed me to escape many years of my life because reality just seemed too hard to bear. I could control my life from my thoughts but when I wasn't in thought my life controlled me. With everything I experienced in my life I learned a valuable lesson and I'm still learning. This lesson is that you can't blame others for your problems or failures. They may have been involved but you made the choice. I learned that only you can make you happy and that God is the only one you can really trust and rely on. Family and friends will let you down but God will always be there. And even if you feel you deserve something and you pray and never get it, there is always a reason why, always a lesson to learn, and it will only make you stronger.

A Life Worth Living by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi,Isabella Selega Csikszentmihalyi Pdf

A Life Worth Living brings together the latest thought on Positive Psychology from an international cast of scholars. It includes historical, philosophical, and empirical reviews of what psychologists have found to matter for personal happiness and well-being. The contributions to this volume agree on priciples of optimal development that start from purely material and selfish concerns, but then lead to ever broader circles of responsibility embracing the goals of others and the well-being of the environment; on the importance of spirituality; on the development of strengths specific to the individual.Rather than material success, popularity, or power, the investigations reported in this volume suggest that personally constructed goals, intrinsic motivation, and a sense of autonomy are much more important. The chapters indicate that hardship and suffering do not necessarily make us unhappy, and they suggest therapeutical implications for improving the quality of life. Specific topics covered include the formation of optimal childhood values and habits as well as a new perspective on aging. This volume provides a powerful counterpoint to a mistakenly reductionist psychology. They show that subjective experience can be studied scientifically and measured accurately. They highlight the potentiality for autonomy and freedom that is among the most precious elements of the human condition. MOreover, they make a convincing case for the importance of subjective phenomena, which often affect happiness more than external, material conditions. After long decades during which psychologists seemed to have forgotten that misery is not the only option, the blossoming of Positive Psychology promises a better understanding of what a vigorous, meaningful life may consist of.
