Howth and Its Owners by Francis Elrington Ball Pdf

Excerpt from Howth and Its Owners: Being the Fifth Part of a History of County Dublin and an Extra Volume of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland On a first view the peninsula seems to have more connexion with the present than the past. As it is approached from the west by its isthmus modern villas and places of worship are alone seen, and within its limits houses Of the last century are every where most conspicuous. III addition, an artificial harbour on its northern shore, and a light-house at its eastern extremity, tend to increase its association with later times. But a closer inspec tion shows that the peninsula contains many ancient remains, indeed, more than any other area of the same size in the county of Dublin, and affords much scope for archfeological and historical research. A cromlech recalls the primeval age; a fortified head land, the days of the Celtic monarchy; an early sanctuary, the dawn Of Christianity; and the varied architecture of a castle and church, whose foundations were laid nearly seven centuries ago, the changes of subsequent periods. To the evidence of an event ful past afforded by these relics, the place names make addition, and establish a close connexion with the Scandinavian invaders, from whose tongue the names of the peninsula and its island are derived. Grace O'Malley by Anne Chambers Pdf

Grace O'Malley is unique as the only woman recorded on the famous Baptista Boazio map of Ireland (1599), a tribute to the status she achieved as a leader on land and at sea in the 16th century. In 1979 Anne Chambers' original biography of this famous Irishwoman, who over the centuries had been airbrushed from historical record, put her on the map once again. The biography became a milestone in Irish publishing and the catalyst for the restoration of Grace O'Malley to political, social and maritime history, as well as establishing her as an inspirational female role model in the classroom. In the 40th anniversary edition of this international bestselling biography, drawn from rare contemporary manuscript records, the author presents Ireland's great pirate queen not as a vague mythological figure but as one of the world's most extraordinary female leaders. Political pragmatist and tactician, rebel, intrepid mariner and pirate, wife, lover, mother, grandmother and matriarch, the 'most notorious woman in all the coasts of Ireland', Grace O'Malley challenged and triumphed over the social and political barriers she encountered in the course of her long, pioneering life.Breaching boundaries of gender imbalance and bias in a period of immense social and political upheaval and change, Grace O'Malley rewrote the rules to become one of the world's first recorded feminist trailblazers. This updated anniversary edition brings Grace O'Malley's story to a new generation awakened to the global focus on gender equality as well as positive ageing.

The Irish Parliament in the Middle Ages by H. G. Richardson,G. O. Sayles Pdf

Based largely on manuscript material, this comprehensive account of the Irish Parliament in the Middle Ages shows that early Irish parliaments cannot be identified either in form or function with their modern namesake and, consequently, demonstrates that the concept of governmental democracy had a much slower, more gradual development than historians have heretofore believed. The history of the Irish Parliaments proper begins with that held at Castledermot in mid-June 1264. During the reign of Edward II and the early years of Edward III significant changes took place—changes, the authors, point out, similar to those taking place in the development of the English Parliament, though there were important differences. The book continues with a description of the Irish Parliament in the middle years of Edward III's reign and concludes with an account of the parliament at Drogheda held in 1494, when the passing of Poyning's Law brought the period of medieval parliaments to a close. The appendices include an almost complete list of the meetings convened between 1264 and 1494, as well as copies of documents that, the authors say, are the only means whereby a close glimpse may be had of the personnel and deliberations of the Privy Council.

Grace O'Malley by Michael Sheane Pdf

Grace O’Malley, better known in Ireland as Granuaile, was a pirate queen infesting the coast of Eirinn and further afield in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Powerful on both land and sea, she commanded a large fleet of ships as well as leading her own army into battle. This fascinating book from Michael Sheane explores the reality behind the myths and legends that have been told about O’Malley - a story that is no less amazing once fact becomes separated from fiction. From her earliest days learning the ways of the sea to her death in the same year as England’s Queen Elizabeth, this book shines a spotlight on the incredible life of Gráinne Mhaol, as she is still known as in Irish Folklore to this day.

Making the Grand Figure by Toby Christopher Barnard,Fellow and Tutor in Modern History T C Barnard Pdf

"Through such everyday articles as linen shirts, wigs, silver teaspoons, pottery plates and engravings, Barnard evokes a striking variety of lives and attitudes. Possessions, he shows, even horses and dogs, highlighted and widened divisions, not only between rich and poor, women and men, but also between Irish Catholics and the Protestant settlers. Displaying fresh evidence and unexpected perspectives, the book throws new light on Ireland during a formative period. Its discoveries, set within the context of the 'consumer revolution' gripping Europe and North America, allow Ireland for the first time to be integrated into discussions of the pleasures and pains of consumerism."--BOOK JACKET.
