Consensus on Hyperthermia for the 1990s by Haim I. Bicher,John R. McLaren,Giuseppe M. Pigliucci Pdf
Hyperthermia as a safe and effective cancer treatment modality is rapidly evolving propelled by widespread research and clinical efforts worldwide. Presentations on Hyperthermia experience are now commonplace at Oncology meetings, as are congresses dedicated entirely to the intertwined interactions between basic sciences and patient treatment that together are forming the structure of a new medical specialty. Such was the XII International Symposium on Clinical Hyperthermia held in Rome, Italy, April 27 - 29, 1989. Papers presented therein constitute the backbone of this book. Biology research has provided data describing mechanisms of action for the cancer cell killing and physiological effects of Hyperthermia. Physics research has led to the development of equipment enabling treatment of many areas of the human body, as well as explained the limitations that still constrain our ability to treat, especially in the areas of deep seated tumor heating and non-invasive thermometry. The main question that will decide the future of this modality is that of its clinical use. To put it succinctly, what do we do with this potentially useful tool in an everyday clinical oncological practice . •• ? This is the main question addressed in this book as "Consensus on Hyperthermia for the 1990s. " The book in cludes 28 presented papers and 25 invited chapters from some of the leading experts in the field. Their basic mechanisms of action were physics principles, treatment quality assurance and especially, clinical indications.

Interstitial Hyperthermia by Muneyasu Urano,Evan B. Douple Pdf
This third volume in the series "Hyperthermia and Oncology" provides insight in and updated information on various aspects of interstitial hyperthermia. It aims to serve as a guide for clinicians who are either already working in the field or who wish to implement this treatment.
Hyperthermia by North American Hyperthermia Group. Meeting Pdf
Hyperthermia is rapidly becoming the fourth modality of cancer treatment, at least a useful adjuvant to radiation therapy, chemotherapy or surgery; at best, a new therapeutic form that, properly used, may open new horizons in the fight against this dreadful disease. The staging is still primitive. The devices used are after laboratory improvisations, and lack the precision and definition of treatment fields that will allow mass use of the modality. Clinical practices are limited to the procedural evaluations of a few pioneer groups, and basic understanding of its mechanism of action, although progressing by leaps and bounds is still short of perfection. The challenge and the promise are there, and because of this, engineers, physicists, biologists, physiologists and clinicians from different specialties have a basic need for interaction, both in terms of exchange of scientific information and peer review of results and clinical trials. To satisfy this need, to act as a clearinghouse of knowledge and a forum for discussion, the North American Hyperthermia Group (NAHG) has been formed. The meeting in Detroit in August 1981 represents the first gathering of the group, to be followed by a second in Salt Lake City in April 1982. The Detroit meeting was mostly devoted to the physiology and clinical problems associated with Hyperthermia, although physics and basic thermobiology were also discussed. 75 scientists attended the meeting and 30 papers were presented. A selection of these papers represents this volume, offered more as a statement of problems than a final solution to them.

An Introduction to the Practical Aspects of Clinical Hyperthermia by Stanley B. Field,Jeffrey W. Hand Pdf
Hyperthermia combined with either radiation or chemotherapy is rapidly becoming a clinical reality in many institutions as a form of treatment of malignant disease. This is an introduction to the subject aimed at the total audience, but particularly clinicians.
Hyperthermic Oncology from Bench to Bedside by Satoshi Kokura,Toshikazu Yoshikawa,Takeo Ohnishi Pdf
This comprehensive work broadens readers' understanding of the rudimentary mechanism of the anti-cancer effect of hyperthermia. It also presents state-of-the-art clinical outcomes by hyperthermia treatment of cancer. In the past few decades, basic and clinical research have shown through in vitro experiments that hyperthermia inhibits epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), resulting in the prevention of metastasis. It also has been learned that hyperthermia shows its superior benefit when applied in combination with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or various immunotherapies as treatments of several types of carcinoma. The chapters here from expert contributors describe the details of their research for each type of cancer. This book provides not only an overview and the current status of hyperthermia but also its future perspectives. Therefore this volume will greatly benefit oncologists, radiologists and radiology technologists, and chemotherapists who are involved in immunotherapy for all kinds of cancer.

Hyperthermia as a tool for the treatment of malignant disease is rapidly becoming a clinical reality. In this book I am attempting to summarize the known biological and physical underpinnings that have led to this development. I also present a compilation of existing clinical results, limited as these are. My aim is to provide oncologists and other physicians with up-to-date information on this modality, which is both new and old, as well as to make available to biologists, physicists and engineers sum maries of currently available information on specific areas of hyperthermic research. Many people have helped me with this book. Specifically, thanks are due to Drs. William Dewey, Jean Dutreix, Peter Fessenden, Gloria Li, and Jane Marmor. Their suggestions have been invaluable. I hope that not too many errors and omissions have crept into the volume, but in any case, for these I have only myself to blame. I also wish to express my appreciation to David Betten and Marie Graham for their help. Most of this material was written while I was on sabbatical leave on the shores of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. There I enjoyed the hospitality of a gracious, friendly, and proud people who deserve better than fate seems to have in store for them.
