I Am That Poet by Joseph Lowe Pdf

My poems come from my journey in life experience from one of the eleven children in Mississippi, to joining the US Marine Corp at seventeen years old during the Vietnam war era and after spending 13 months of overseas duty, I was honorable discharge after my return, as a young man I began to use alcohol as a substance, to deal with that experience and the social ills of that era and it lingered, became a problem later on in life. I began to write poetry as a emotional outlet to ease the pain of my journey to sobriety, which has been fifteen years now. I know the journey is not over but the road is smoother now. That's why I am sharing my pain, my victories, my joy and laughter with you for the veterans suffering with PTSD, anyone dealing with depression, anxiety or mental issues or a bad relationship, a rough day at work, a bad hair day, waiting in the doctor's office to see what the Xray says. After reading a poem, I want you to say that Joseph Theophilus Lowe is that poet, who made me throw that tissue away and put a smile on my face and made my day. May god bless and may you find your way. Sincerely, Joseph Theophilus Lowe

Washing Off the Raccoon Eyes by Margo LaPierre Pdf

"What happens when we believe in something that isn't there? What happens to the mind maps of places we don't live in anymore? What happens when we doubt our own history? We cling to the solidity of physical space. Our abstracted sense of being swells to its limits, presses against its boundary of skin, bumps up against the world, finds itself there. Washing Off the Raccoon Eyes explores the idea that we as humans are undefined, chaotic, that we come to know ourselves through the spaces we inhabit and the people we encounter. These are hungry poems looking feverishly outwards, phenomenological poems that speak of late nights, feminist issues, mental illness and writing itself."--

Midlife Action Figure by Chris Banks Pdf

Banks’s stunning new collection, exploring bold frontiers “Poetry is an act of mischief,” Theodore Roethke famously once said, and Chris Banks takes this as his credo in Midlife Action Figure. His subject matter ranges from the familiar to the surreal, taking readers through poems that are both wondrous and strange, heartfelt and humorous, controlled and impatient. Whether calling a tree “an anthology of leaves” or describing time as “a Fisher-Price View-Master of ‘first kisses’ and ‘no return’ policies,” Banks approaches writing as if anything might make for alarming, strange, and dizzying verse. Banks knits together wit with wildly inventive imagery as he follows his poems outside convention where they play with stolen matches. Capable of both deep introspection and the quick turn of phrase, he places his tongue firmly in his cheek as he looks for a measure of human wonder in this intermission between TED Talks and the apocalypse. Midlife Action Figure is a tour de force for anyone looking for that rare book that is as exciting as it is provocative, showcasing both pathos and humor, while it explores what it means to be alive in the early 21st century.

Citizen Illegal by José Olivarez Pdf

“Olivarez steps into the ‘inbetween’ standing between Mexico and America in these compelling, emotional poems. Written with humor and sincerity” (Newsweek). Named a Best Book of the Year by Newsweek and NPR. In this “devastating debut” (Publishers Weekly), poet José Olivarez explores the stories, contradictions, joys, and sorrows that embody life in the spaces between Mexico and America. He paints vivid portraits of good kids, bad kids, families clinging to hope, life after the steel mills, gentrifying barrios, and everything in between. Drawing on the rich traditions of Latinx and Chicago writers like Sandra Cisneros and Gwendolyn Brooks, Olivarez creates a home out of life in the in-between. Combining wry humor with potent emotional force, Olivarez takes on complex issues of race, ethnicity, gender, class, and immigration using an everyday language that invites the reader in, with a unique voice that makes him a poet to watch. “The son of Mexican immigrants, Olivarez celebrates his Mexican-American identity and examines how those two sides conflict in a striking collection of poems.” —USA Today

Witness, I Am by Gregory Scofield Pdf

Witness, I Am is divided into three gripping sections of new poetry from one of Canada’s most recognized poets. The first part of the book, “Dangerous Sound,” contains contemporary themed poems about identity and belonging, undone and rendered into modern sound poetry. “Muskrat Woman,” the middle part of the book, is a breathtaking epic poem that considers the issue of missing and murdered indigenous women through the reimagining and retelling of a sacred Cree creation story. The final section of the book, “Ghost Dance,” raids the autobiographical so often found in Scofield’s poetry, weaving the personal and universal into a tapestry of sharp poetic luminosity. From “Killer,” Scofield eerily slices the dreadful in with the exquisite: “I could, this day of proficient blooms, / take your fingers, / tie them down one by one. This one for the runaway, / this one for the joker, / this one for the sass-talker, / this one for the judge, / this one for the jury. / Oh, I could kill you.”

The Nerve Of It by Lynn Emanuel Pdf

Winner of the 2016 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize from the Academy of American Poets Emanuel’s version of a “new and selected poems” turns convention on its head. She ignores chronology, placing new poems beside old, mixing middle and early poems with recent work, and liberating all her poems from the restraints of their particular histories, both aesthetic and autobiographical. Whether writing in the comedic drag of the cartoon strip, or investigating the Mobius strip relationship between reader and writer, or exposing the humor and hurt that accompany visitations from Frank O’Hara and Gertrude Stein, The Nerve of It both stings and pleases with its intelligence, wit and vivacity. It breaks through, in ways that are bold, sexy, haunting and wry, the die-hard opposition of new and old, personal narrative and linguistic play, sincerity and irony, misery and hilarity. Open the book. Something new is happening here.

The Ministry of Silly Poets: "I am not a poet!" by Martin Rothery Pdf

I am not a poet! That is what I keep telling myself anyway! A poet is someone that takes the literary form very seriously and it would appear that I tend to be quite the opposite. I just enjoy playing around with words to create something enjoyable to read, something to make people laugh, something to make you think or just say “what was that?”. Who cares as long as it provokes a reaction? Yes, sometimes they are a bit of fun, sometimes a bit grim, sometimes thought provoking, but at the end of the day what poetry should be? Entertaining! I have been writing “poems” and rhymes for quite a few years now and I didn’t realise how many I’d done until I put them altogether in one place This book is the result of that. There is quite a variety and hopefully something for everyone. There is no theme or message I’m looking to put across, no particular order to read them in and no agenda but for you to take pleasure in the power of words, whatever order they come in! Enjoy!

Unaccompanied by Javier Zamora Pdf

New York Times Bestselling Author of Solito "Every line resonates with a wind that crosses oceans."—Jamaal May "Zamora's work is real life turned into myth and myth made real life." —Glappitnova Javier Zamora was nine years old when he traveled unaccompanied 4,000 miles, across multiple borders, from El Salvador to the United States to be reunited with his parents. This dramatic and hope-filled poetry debut humanizes the highly charged and polarizing rhetoric of border-crossing; assesses borderland politics, race, and immigration on a profoundly personal level; and simultaneously remembers and imagines a birth country that's been left behind. Through an unflinching gaze, plainspoken diction, and a combination of Spanish and English, Unaccompanied crosses rugged terrain where families are lost and reunited, coyotes lead migrants astray, and "the thin white man let us drink from a hose / while pointing his shotgun." From "Let Me Try Again": He knew we weren't Mexican. He must've remembered his family coming over the border, or the border coming over them, because he drove us to the border and told us next time, rest at least five days, don't trust anyone calling themselves coyotes, bring more tortillas, sardines, Alhambra. He knew we would try again. And again—like everyone does. Javier Zamora was born in El Salvador and immigrated to the United States at the age of nine. He earned a BA at UC-Berkeley, an MFA at New York University, and is a 2016–2018 Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University.

I Will Be Corrupted by Joseph Dandurand Pdf

A tale of a Kwantlen man who has been given the gift of healing but also is a heroin addict living on the eastside, what drove the author to write this book of poems was how the voice of the Healer came to him and it was with ease that each poem showed itself. It was if he were right there either talking to a Sasquatch or crawling down an alley on the eastside of Vancouver. It almost has a film quality to it as if each poem is a scene from an epic tale. This is a book of hope, loss, and hopefully a sense of redemption for all the poor souls who find themselves on the street and lost from where they truly come from.
