The Rapids by Sam Twyford-Moore Pdf

The Rapids is an exploration of manic depression (also known as bipolar disorder). With reflections on artists such as Carrie Fisher, Kanye West, Saul Bellow, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Spalding Gray, Sam Twyford-Moore takes readers on a literary and cultural tour of mania and what it means to live with a diagnosis of "bipolarity" in contemporary society. He also looks at the condition in our digital world, where someone’s manic episode can unfold live in real time, watched by millions. His own story, told unflinchingly, is shocking and sometimes darkly comic. It gives the book an edge that is not always comfortable but full of insight and empathy. Smart, lively, and well-researched, The Rapids manages to be both a wild ride and introspective at once, exploring a condition that touches thousands of people, directly or indirectly.

50 Ways to Leave your 50's by Scott Ludwig Pdf

In my fourth book, In it for the Long Run, one of the most popular chapters with the readers was ‘You can call me Al.’ It was all about my good friend Al Barker, the only person I’ve ever met who brakes with his left foot. Wanting to capitalize on the popularity of using titles of Paul Simon songs, I reviewed his repertoire for an applicable title for this book. Since the book is about my last year on earth before turning 60 years of age, I initially considered ‘Slip Slidin’ Away’ but thought that might project a negative connotation towards getting older. Instead I chose one of Simon’s more popular songs and gave it my own slant as I wanted to do 50 things I’d never done before in the 12 months leading up to becoming a sexagenarian (don’t get the wrong idea--it just means a person between 60 and 69 years of age). On my 60th birthday (December 10, 2014) someone asked me how I felt. I said ‘just like I did when I was 59. Heck, it was only yesterday’ (although my grandson calls it ‘lasterday’ which if you really think about it makes a lot more sense). As for the 50 things I’d never done before. don’t expect anything outrageous (jumping out of an airplane), dangerous (wrestling an alligator) or spectacular (making a dinosaur appear--but if I could my grandson would be SO impressed). Just 50 things pretty much anyone could do...as long as they have the right attitude. And by ‘right attitude’ I mean ‘sometimes you just have to say what the ___.’ Just because I turned 60 doesn’t mean I reached maturity overnight. After all, maturity is for old people.

Gerald Murnane by Professor Anthony Uhlmann FAHA Pdf

Gerald Murnane is one of Australia’s most important contemporary authors, but for years was neglected by critics. In 2018 the New York Times described him as “the greatest living English-language writer most people have never heard of” and tipped him as a future Nobel Prize winner. Gerald Murnane: Another World in This One coincides with a renewed interest in his work. It includes an important new essay by Murnane himself, alongside chapters by established and emerging literary critics from Australia and internationally. Together they provide a stimulating reassessment of Murnane’s diverse body of work.

Angeleno Days by Gregory Orfalea Pdf

Though he has spent half of his life elsewhere, Gregory Orfalea has remained obsessed with Los Angeles. That Òbrutal, beautiful city along the Pacific seaÓ shaped him and led to a series of essays originally published in the Los Angeles Times Magazine. These deeply moving pieces are gathered here together for the first time. Populated with fascinating charactersÑthe Angelenos of OrfaleaÕs lifeÑthese essays tell the story of the authorÕs trials. He returns to Los Angeles to teach, trying to reconcile the LA of his childhood with the city he now faces. He takes on progressively more difficult and painful subjects, finally confronting the memories of the shocking tragedy that took the lives of his father and sister. With more than 400,000 Arab Americans in Los AngelesÑprobably surpassing Detroit as the largest contingent in AmericaÑOrfalea also explores his own community and its political and social concerns. He agonizes over another destruction of Lebanon and examines in searing detail a massacre of civilians in Iraq. Angeleno Days takes the memoir and personal essay to rare heights. Orfalea is a deeply human writer who reveals not only what it means to be human in America now, but also what it will take to remain human in the days to come. These essays soar, confound, reveal, and strike at our senses and sensibilities, forcing us to think and feel in new ways.

Being a Girl with Glasses isn't just a style choice; it's a way of life. Marissa Walsh has worn glasses since third grade. Now—ten pairs of glasses, one pair of prescription sunglasses, and endless pairs of contacts later—she has fully embraced her four-eyed fate. Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw by Haldi Falki Pdf

Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, fondly known as Sam Bahadur, was one of the greatest war heroes and military leaders India has produced. He became a household name in India and was hailed as a legendary soldier and an inspiration to his fellow citizens for crafting India's greatest military victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war as Chief of Staff (1969-73) of the Indian armed forces. Spanning four decades, he served the country gloriously through five wars—World War II, The Indo-Pakistani War of Partition (1947), the Sino-Indian War (1962), and the India-Pakistan wars (1965 and 1971). The first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the five-star rank of Field Marshal, Sam Bahadur continues to be the most admired war hero of our army chiefs. He will remain an example of self-sacrifice, personal bravery, and steadfast devotion to duty that began before India's independence, and will deservedly live in the annals of the military history of India forever.

The Last Horse Patrol by Homer A. Taylor Pdf

In the summer of 1977, drug smuggling was rampant in the southern Arizona desert. Using horses, smugglers made a massive profit, as these horse trains were much more difficult to detectuntil the United States Customs Patrol decided to beat these smugglers at their own game. Horses seized from the drug dealers were used by Customs Patrol agents, and soon the smugglers were running from the law. The Last Horse Patrol is the firsthand account of this law enforcement agenda, written by a retired member of the Customs Patrol, Homer Taylor. Taylor was an important part of the team, with extensive experience in the park service and in-depth knowledge of the Arizona desert. But it is not only a retelling of the how, when, and why of Customs Patrol; its a retelling of livelihood and friendship in the summer heat. It wasnt all work and no play for these Customs Patrol officers. Together, they formed friendships and lifelong connections beneath the starry desert skies. Later, they mourned the closure of the Customs Patrolthe most cost effective and successful force against drug smuggling in United States history. For Homer Taylor, it was an experience he would never forget; for our country, it was a victory in the war on drugs.
