Sandcastles, Tall Ships and Vanities by William Hite Pdf

Sandcastles, Tall Ships, and Vanities is a fictional family love story intermingled with factual American and British history. Amanda Worsham is born during the War of 1812, in Charleston, South Carolina, to a wealthy British family involved with sailing vessels and worldwide shipping. "Sandcastles" is analogous to the ill-fated Southern plantation system, in that it exists when slavery exists, and is destined to vanish when slavery ends-just as the proverbial sandcastle disappears before the oncoming tide. "Tall Ships" alludes to the family's shipping business utilizing "windjammers," or beautiful tall sailing vessels for global sea trade. "Vanities" are whimsical yet powerful emotions. And to relegate another to slavery is vanity in its extreme (a self-evident truth). And unabashedly, it is a Christian, pro-life, anti-prostitution, and anti-slavery descriptive novel filled with human frailty and anguish. This story "is a handful," so to speak, dealing with family standards, love, sexuality, homosexuality, destructive prostitution (the so-called "white slavery" curse), plus the learning an altogether-fabulous wealth management stratagem. As she begins her marriage to longtime beau, Timothy Caldwell, Amanda assumes the Worsham family's New York-, Boston-, and Charleston-based overseas shipping business (an endeavor with tall ships and part of the fledgling clandestine military industrial complex). She witnesses the end of the Revolutionary War, the beginning of the American Civil War, and she helps shape a dynasty you'll long remember.

Papers on the Constitution by Anonim Pdf

The Army's efforts in support of the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution took many different forms, including a Bicentennial Lecture Series. A group of distinguished historians presented papers that treat the whole spectrum of current research on the Constitution and its origins, especially the role of the Framers in the formation of the new Republic. Papers on the Constitution captures these scholars' pertinent, often intriguing, conclusions. The volume makes clear to the men and women of today's Army that the Framers of the Constitution established for all time the precedent that the military, subordinated to Congress, would remain the servant of the Republic, a tradition summarized in every Soldier's oath "to support the Constitution of the United States against all enemies . . . [and] to bear true faith and allegiance to the same."

Sea Gate Remembered by Arnold Rosen Pdf

Today, gated communities abound in our nation. But what was it like living in one 100 years ago? Author Arnold Rosen describes life in New York?s first gated community (the gate was erected in 1898) in his book, SEA GATE REMEMBERED. As the pages turn, this book tours you through the generation?s coming of age in the 1930?s and 40s—the games we played, the stores we shopped, the schools we attended and the somber war years. So much of the many privacies beyond the gate are revealed by the author and ex-Sea Gaters who spent their youthful years beyond the wired fences at the southwestern tip of Brooklyn walled off from Coney Island next door and extending to the rest of North America. Arnold Rosen, author of twenty books on computers and office technology, grew up in Sea Gate where his father owned and operated sideshows and amusement rides beyond the fence in Coney Island. Now professor emeritus at Nassau Community College, Rosen graduated with a BS degree from Ohio State University an an MS degree from Hunter College after serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. The author lived in Sea Gate from 1932 to 1952 and now has come ?full circle" to retire in another gated community—Sun City—Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Alien Memos by Thomas N. Hackney Pdf

Alien Memos provides scientifically verified details and evidence of what certainly appears to be extraterrestrial activity of a very high order. Revealed in this book are four semiotic communications from an advanced (presumably) extraterrestrial intelligence. Here is a comprehensive account of these miraculous, yet well-documented, events that took place just before and after mankind's first (and only) major, congressionally-funded search for extraterrestrial intelligence. One of them was the most energetic event of any kind ever witnessed by man in his solar system. But miracles are rare, and they often have rational explanations. The events covered in this book are no different. Fasten your seatbelt, because Kansas is going bye-bye. Take a moment to visit Thomas Hackney's website: www.setifacts.com

Concepts on the Move by Anonim Pdf

In order to give an impetus to the production of an apparatus of aesthetic concepts, in line with Deleuze and Guattari’s claim to create new concepts for a changing world, this volume publishes statements and discussions of ten Concept on the Move workshops, as well as texts and discussions of the concluding Concept on the Move symposium. The integral outcome of the workshops, the symposium and the discussions does not, however, present some sort of blueprint for the future of visual art and aesthetics. If one wished to designate the Concepts on the Move publication in one notion at all that definitively could only be TOOLKIT. A TOOKIT in the sense of a great collection of ideas, topics, issues, notions, and concepts emerging in the 21st-century world of visual art and theory. They indeed could serve as an impetus for the construction and production of a body of theoretical work fit to understand today’s technological, theoretical, and artistic developments in the art world. Are concepts on the move? Yes, they are, and they always will be on the great journey visual art takes them.

Unsettling Canadian Art History by Erin Morton Pdf

Bringing together fifteen scholars of art and culture, Unsettling Canadian Art History addresses the visual and material culture of settler colonialism, enslavement, and racialized diasporas in the contested white settler state of Canada. This collection offers new avenues for scholarship on art, archives, and creative practice by rethinking histories of Canadian colonialisms from Black, Indigenous, racialized, feminist, queer, trans, and Two-Spirit perspectives. Writing across many positionalities, contributors offer chapters that disrupt colonial archives of art and culture, excavating and reconstructing radical Black, Indigenous, and racialized diasporic creation and experience. Exploring the racist frameworks that continue to erase histories of violence and resistance, this book imagines the expansive possibilities of a decolonial future. Unsettling Canadian Art History affirms the importance of collaborative conversations and work in the effort to unsettle scholarship in Canadian art and culture.

London River by H. M. Tomlinson Pdf

"It begins on the north side of the City, at Poverty Corner. It begins imperceptibly, and very likely is no more than what a native knows is there. It does not look like a foreshore. It looks like another of the byways of the capital. There is nothing to distinguish it from the rest of Fenchurch Street. You will not find it in the Directory, for its name is only a familiar bearing used by seamen among themselves. If a wayfarer came upon it from the west, he might stop to light a pipe (as well there as anywhere) and pass on, guessing nothing of what it is and of its memories. And why should he? London is built of such old shadows; and while we are here casting our own there is not much time to turn and question what they fall upon..." "London River" is a novel about the great capital of the Great Britain, as seen on board a barge trip on one of its rivers. The book describes the city in vivid imagery, focusing on its prominent sea-faring heritage as seen through famous ships that have sailed through it.

The Height of Fearlessness by Mia Iwama Hastings,Mimi Iwama Pdf

Written by Mia Iwama Hastings as told to her by her mother Mimi Iwama, this is a true story unlike any other: the story of the flower-mountain Hanaokayama, a loving mother with a tragic secret, and a nine-year-old girl who learned how to conquer fear. Little Mi-chan is a sensitive, thoughtful child with a delicate constitution and powerful love for nature rivaled only by the strength of her devotion to her mother. At the tender age of nine, Mi-chan dutifully leaves everything behind to follow her mother on a life-changing journey to the top of Hanaokayama, the little flower mountain. There, she eagerly studies the life lessons her mother finds everywhere in the natural world surrounding them: the courageous sacrifice of a fallen cherry blossom, the boundless freedom of the roiling sea, and the impermanence of all things—from the softest rays of morning sunlight to the mightiest trees on the face of the mountain. Mi-chan fills the pages of a notebook with the words and images her mother parcels out for her every day on the mountain, each one a precious meditation on the meaning of life, freedom, mindfulness and the power of perspective. Living carefree among trees and wildflowers so colorful they seem to have been painted onto the mountain itself, young Mi-chan cannot know that her mother’s lessons will be the only thing left standing between her and the all-consuming fear of the unknown.
