Komodo Dragon Facts • Komodo dragons are also known as Varanus Komodoensis, komodo monitor, the komodo island monitor, blawak rakasa (this means giant monitor) or ora buaya darat (this means land crocodile) • Komodo dragons are large lizards. • Lizards are a type of animal called a reptile. • Komodo dragons do not breathe fire like the dragons in story books. • They are the largest living species of lizard. • They were officially discovered by western scientists in 1910. • They are classified as vulnerable which means that they are at risk of extinction. • The biggest ever recorded komodo dragon in the wild was 10ft long ( 3.13 meters) and weighed 370 lb (166 kg) • Their size has been called island gigantism by scientists. Many believe that the komodo dragon has become so big because there are no other predators where they live and they have their pick of prey. • Other scientists feel that the size of the komodo dragon shows a direct link between them and their ancestors; the varanid lizards. These extinct creatures once lived in Australia and Indonesia. • When a komodo dragon in a zoo needs a blood test, two zoo keepers have to hold it down because it is so powerful, and it does not like blood tests! • It can run up to 15mph. • A komodo dragon will attack animals bigger than itself. No other lizard will do this. • A komodo dragon will keep growing new teeth to replace those that have fallen off or broken while eating. • Its saliva is poisonous. • In 2011Komodo was included in the “New 7 Wonders of Nature” list. • Komodo dragons are carnivores. • 3 stuffed komodo dragons can be still seen today in the American Museum of Natural History. They were brought back from an expedition to the Indonesian Islands in 1926 by Douglas Burden. • Burden also brought back 2 live komodo dragons that were put in a show where people paid a lot of money to see these dragons tied up on a stage. This would never happen today because people would say it was cruel. It was this show that inspired the movie makers to create a famous old film called King Kong from 1933. (it was later remade in 2005) This is about a giant gorilla that is taken from its home and put in a show in America. In the film King Kong escapes from the show to wreak havoc in New York City. The komodo dragons never did that.

First Lady by Sonia Purnell Pdf

From the personal and political upheavals of the Great War, through the Churchills’ ‘wilderness years’ in the 1930s, to Clementine’s desperate efforts to preserve her husband’s health during the struggle against Hitler, this is the inspiring but often ignored story of one of the most important women in modern history. Without Churchill’s inspiring leadership Britain could not have survived its darkest hour and repelled the Nazi menace. Without his wife Clementine, however, he might never have become Prime Minister. By his own admission, the Second World War would have been ‘impossible without her’. Clementine was Winston’s emotional rock and his most trusted confidante; not only was she involved in some of the most crucial decisions of war, but she exerted an influence over her husband and the Government that would appear scandalous to modern eyes. Yet her ability to charm Britain’s allies and her humanitarian efforts on the Home Front earned her deep respect, both behind closed doors in Whitehall and among the population at large. That Clementine should become Britain’s ‘First Lady’ was by no means pre-ordained. Born into impecunious aristocracy, her childhood was far from gilded. Her mother was a serial adulteress and gambler, who spent many years uprooting her children to escape the clutches of their erstwhile father, and by the time Clementine entered polite society she had become the target of cruel snobbery and rumours about her parentage. In Winston, however, she discovered a partner as emotionally insecure as herself, and in his career she found her mission. Her dedication to his cause may have had tragic consequences for their children, but theirs was a marriage that changed the course of history. Now, acclaimed biographer Sonia Purnell explores the peculiar dynamics of this fascinating union.

Joan Procter, Dragon Doctor by Patricia Valdez Pdf

For fans of Ada Twist: Scientist comes a fascinating picture book biography of a pioneering female scientist--who loved reptiles! Back in the days of long skirts and afternoon teas, young Joan Procter entertained the most unusual party guests: slithery and scaly ones, who turned over teacups and crawled past the crumpets.... While other girls played with dolls, Joan preferred the company of reptiles. She carried her favorite lizard with her everywhere--she even brought a crocodile to school! When Joan grew older, she became the Curator of Reptiles at the British Museum. She went on to design the Reptile House at the London Zoo, including a home for the rumored-to-be-vicious komodo dragons. There, just like when she was a little girl, Joan hosted children's tea parties--with her komodo dragon as the guest of honor. With a lively text and vibrant illustrations, scientist and writer Patricia Valdez and illustrator Felicita Sala bring to life Joan Procter's inspiring story of passion and determination. The Death and Life of Miguel De Cervantes: A Novel by Stephen Marlowe Pdf

This is the story of my death and life, in which fiction and that lesser truth, history, from time to time form a seamless whole. Speaking is the hero of Stephen Marlowe's brilliant new novel. He is Don Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra: son of a barber-surgeon (always on the run from the bill collector), grandson of a converso(a Jew who chose Christianity over the flames of the Spanish Inquisition), adorer of his own sister (who may not have been his sister after all), brother of one of the most famous spies in recorded history (though the records have mysteriously vanished), prisoner in an Algerian dungeon (following capture by Barbary Pirates), friend to a Faustian eunuch astrologer named Cide Hamete Benegeli (whose missing private parts are miraculously regenerating), and, of course, creator of the most celebrated of all fictional historical novels--The Adventures of Don Quixote de la Mancha. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
