The Iceland Watch by David Whittaker,Gisli Thorsteinsson Pdf

ÿWith a population of just 329,000 (barely more than Nottingham), Iceland is the most thinly-populated country in Europe, and 80% of it is uninhabited. Despite this, in the 1100 years since humans first settled there, the Icelanders have built a remarkably resourceful, diverse and robust community ? and they have never had to go to war. In fact, in 2013 the United Nations ranked Iceland the 13th most developed country in the world. Professor Gisli Thorsteinsson is Professor of Education in Reykjavik, while Dr David Whittaker is a retired academic specializing in geopolitics. The two authors have written this book to record and explain Iceland?s history and its many achievements and to introduce readers who may not be familiar with the country to the range and vitality of Icelandic thinking and achievement.

Iceland - An Overview by A. -K. Rademacher,C. Bätz,K. Hartmann Pdf

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Other States, grade: 1,3, University of Cooperative Education Mannheim, language: English, abstract: We're selling Iceland," quoted the Financial Times in November 2007 after an interview with Jon Olafsson, CEO of Icelandic Glacial. "The purity and coolness of the island - because Iceland is very cool and hip these days." Though this statement is refered to the water product, it demonstrated the high interest in the island itself. As many know, Iceland is the country where one can witness the phenomenons of Mother Nature: tremendous icecaps and several glaciers, raging rivers and magnificent waterfalls, spouting geysers and steaming solfatara, volcanoes, a multitude of birds and whales. The spectacular landscape is one reason why Iceland's tourism is successful. But in recent years Iceland also drew the attention of many industries to itself. For example, many technological and telecommuniational products have been outsourced in Europe towards Iceland as it provides many competitive advantages in these fields. Iceland is unique: it is the smallest economy in the world that has its own currency and a flexible exchange rate. It is also an advanced country with excellent institutions meaning low corruption index, the rule of law, a highly educated population and more (cf. Iceland Chamber of Commerce 2006). For most of the 1990s the island presented one of the highest consistent growth rates in the world and low inflation and unemployment. Particularly the resource management in the mainstay fisheries sector, price stability and diversification of the industry contributed to this economic record. The paper on hand gives an outline of the country. To begin with general information about the island is described. This includes demographic as well as historical and political aspects. The third chapter sketches the development and structure of the Icelandic economy. C

The A to Z of Iceland by Gudmundur Halfdanarson Pdf

While Iceland is the second largest inhabited island in Europe, with only 313,000 inhabitants in 2007, the Icelanders form one of the smallest independent nations in the world. Around two-thirds of the population lives in the capital, Reykjavík, and its suburbs, while the rest is spread around the inhabitable area of the country. Until fairly recently the Icelandic nation was unusually homogeneous, both in cultural and religious terms; in 1981, around 98 percent of the nation was born in Iceland and 96 percent belonged to the Lutheran state church or other Lutheran religious sects. In 2007, these numbers were down to 89 and 86 percent respectively, reflecting the rapidly growing multicultural nature of Icelandic society. The A to Z of Iceland traces Iceland's history and provides a compass for the direction the country is heading. This is done through its chronology, introductory essays, appendixes, map, bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, events, and institutions and significant political, economic, social, and cultural aspects.

Public Debt, Global Governance and Economic Dynamism by Luigi Paganetto Pdf

This volume presents a selection of contributions to the XXIV Villa Mondragone International Economic Seminar on “Public debt, global governance and economic dynamism”. For the past 23 years, the Seminar has provided an ideal opportunity to meet and discuss the most topical issues in economic research. The quality of the scientific contributions and ensuing debates has consistently been outstanding owing to the participation of leading experts, and the most recent Seminar was no exception. The Seminar was held against the backdrop of high levels of public debt, especially in Europe, combined with very low growth in productivity. Furthermore, markets have been dominated by financial instability, raising the question of whether this is the result of the high debt levels or insufficient economic dynamism. Among the topics covered in this book are the economic challenges and growth policies in the United States; issues relating to the G20, global governance and regional integration; EU governance, growth and the Eurozone crisis; and EMU policy and public debt. Individual contributions also address the impact of labor market reforms, the need for sectoral rebalancing in the Euro area, fiscal multipliers and public debt dynamics, and the effects of fiscal shocks in Italy. The book concludes with a contribution on policy recommendations.
