This research examines the impact of friendship, familial, and political arrangements on the presentation of queer identity in the context of COVID-19, with a particular focus on the expression of homonormativity. In the sociology of sexuality, past research has focused on a 'post-gay' approach to sexuality in which boundaries between heterosexuals and non-heterosexuals are minimized, tending towards assimilation and the erasure of differences. Framed by Duggan's (2003) theory of homonormativity and Lamont and Molnár's (2002) boundary theory, this research departs from the post-gay approach to the study of sexuality and explores the ways in which queer individuals navigate different realms by using boundaries to define and understand their own identities. I conducted eleven semi-structured in-depth interviews with self-identified queer college students, identifying friendships, family, and politics as the three realms in which queer identity was most salient. I found that queer individuals used friendships as a tool for the exploration of their identities and often formed friendships with other queer individuals on the basis of their shared identity and experiences. In the family context, participants described practices of selective and strategic identity disclosure to relatives, sometimes eschewing queer identities for sexualities and genders that subscribed to binaries. In the political realm, participants described anxiety involved with political engagement as well as a sense of pressure and a lack of choice in participating in political activism. Finally, I explore the tension between the self and the collective that was present across each of the three realms, examining the relationship between this tension and the expression of homonormativity.
