IFYGL Temperature Transects, Lake Ontario, 1972 by F. M. Boyce,Clifford Hiley Mortimer,University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee. Center for Great Lakes Studies Pdf

"During the International Field Year on the Great Lakes (IFYGL) a sequence of experiments was carried out on Lake Ontario wherein it was attempted to measure the temperature structure across three vertical cross sections of the lake simultaneously and continuously for periods of at least four days. Experiments were carried out in July, August, and October of 1972 using up to three research vessels equipped with standard and towed temperature profiling devices. The data have been presented as sequences of cross sections of the lake showing the depths of selected isotherms as functions of horizontal distance and time. The data contain striking examples of both large- and small-scale internal waves, standing and progressive. A very limited discussion of the data in terms of the dynamics of basin-wide internal standing waves is given, since it is intended that this publication be viewed primarily as a data report. Time series plots of isotherm depths from moored temperature profiles are included where they overlap the ship surveys. Data from the coastal chain surveys have been used to extend the measurements shorewards and to verify the ship-based measurements. The instrumentation used to obtain the profiles is described in some detail. A considerable effort has been expended to make the report as complete as possible to facilitate the interpretation of the data for future researchers"--Abstract, xiii.

Chemical Dynamics in Freshwater Ecosystems by Frank A.P.C. Gobas Pdf

Chemical Dynamics in Freshwater Ecosystems reviews the processes that control the distribution and impacts of chemical substances discharged into freshwater aquatic environments. The book focuses on the relationships between chemical emissions and the resulting ambient concentration in water, sediments, fish, benthos, plants, and other components of real aquatic ecosystems. Hydrodynamics, sediment dynamics, chemical fate processes, bioaccumulation, and food-chain transfer are major topics discussed in the book. Case studies and models are used to illustrate how quantitative predictions of chemical dynamics and behavior in the aquatic environment can be made. Chemical Dynamics in Freshwater Ecosystems is an excellent reference for aquatic toxicologists, wildlife toxicologists, wildlife biologists, environmental chemists, governmental regulators, environmental modelers, consultants, and students studying the effects of chemicals on aquatic environments.

Nonlinear Internal Waves in Lakes by Kolumban Hutter Pdf

Internal wave dynamics in lakes (and oceans) is an important physical component of geophysical fluid mechanics of ‘quiescent’ water bodies of the Globe. The formation of internal waves requires seasonal stratification of the water bodies and generation by (primarily) wind forces. Because they propagate in basins of variable depth, a generated wave field often experiences transformation from large basin-wide scales to smaller scales. As long as this fission is hydrodynamically stable, nothing dramatic will happen. However, if vertical density gradients and shearing of the horizontal currents in the metalimnion combine to a Richardson number sufficiently small (

Lake Michigan in Motion by Clifford Hiley Mortimer Pdf

"Mortimer chronicles three centuries of inquiry into Lake Michigan from the Native Americans, who called it Michigani (Great Waters), to the French explorers, whose first recorded observations date from the 1600s, to present-day scientists, who use satellite views of the Great Lakes from outer space." "Lake Michigan in Motion is a source of information for amateur naturalists, students, teachers, public officials, a wide variety of scientists and natural resource managers, residents of Lake Michigan's shores, and others who use the lake for their livelihood and recreation."--Jacket.
