The Housing and Economic Experiences of Immigrants in U.S. and Canadian Cities by Carlos Teixeira,Wei Li Pdf

Since the 1960s, new and more diverse waves of immigrants have changed the demographic composition and the landscapes of North American cities and their suburbs. The Housing and Economic Experiences of Immigrants in U.S. and Canadian Cities is a collection of essays examining how recent immigrants have fared in getting access to jobs and housing in urban centres across the continent. Using a variety of methodologies, contributors from both countries present original research on a range of issues connected to housing and economic experiences. They offer both a broad overview and a series of detailed case studies that highlight the experiences of particular communities. This volume demonstrates that, while the United States and Canada have much in common when it comes to urban development, there are important structural and historical differences between the immigrant experiences in these two countries.

The Effect of Literacy on Immigrant Earnings by Ana Ferrer,William Craig Riddell,David Alan Green,Statistics Canada,Canada. Human Resources and Skills Development Canada Pdf

We use a special Canadian dataset containing both literacy test scores and standard labour market variables to examine the impact of literacy on immigrant earnings. Having a literacy measure allows us to examine issues related to discrimination and the sources of lower returns to foreign acquired education and experience among immigrants. We find that the native-born literacy distribution (assessed in English or French) dominates that for immigrants. However, immigrantsand the native born appear to obtain the same return to their literacy skills. We argue that this does not support a discrimination explanation for immigrant-native born earnings differentials. Immigrant shortfalls in literacy can account for about one-half of the earnings gap between university educated immigrants and similarly educated native-born workers. However, low returns to foreign acquired experience have a larger impact on the differential and those low returns are not related to literacy differences. Thus, low literacy among immigrants is an important input to understanding immigrant-native born earnings differentials but is not the dominant explanation.

Diminishing Returns by C.D. Howe Institute Pdf

Together with the United States and Australia, Canada is one of the great immigrant-receiving countries. However, Canada's immigration patterns have changed dramatically since 1967. This document takes a look at the economics of Canada's recent immigration policy. It presents studies written on the issue and focusing precisely on the following points: new issues, new evidence, and new immigration; a comparison of Canadian and US immigration policy in the 20th century; family reunification multipliers; asset demand of immigrant and Canadian-born households; the impact of immigrants on Canada's treasury, circa 1990; the British Columbia experience with immigrants and welfare dependency, 1989; Canadian immigrant earnings, 1971-86; labor market outcomes and the participation of immigrant women in Canadian transfer programs; immigration and trade; business immigration to Canada; immigration and unemployment; and, intended and actual occupations of immigrants.

How Labor Migrants Fare by Klaus F. Zimmermann,Amelie Constant Pdf

In the globalized economy, labor migration has become of central importance. A key issue in the analysis of immigration is how the migrants fare in the economy in which they migrate, and how they assimilate towards the behavior of the natives. Using data from the United States, Canada, many European countries, Australia and New Zealand, the chapters study the developments of earnings, employment, unemployment, self-employment, occupational choices and educational attainment after migration. The book also investigates the role of language in labor market integration and examines the situation of illegal, legalized and unwilling migrants. Policy effects are also studied: Among those are the effects of selection criteria of labor market success and the effects immigrants have on the public sector budget of the receiving country. Hence, the book provides a broad picture of the performance of migrants.

Warmth Of The Welcome by Jeffrey G Reitz Pdf

This book examines how the economic performance of immigrants is shaped by national and urban social institutions. In the United States, particularly in the high-immigration cities, most immigrant-origin groups have significantly lower earnings than do their counterparts in Canadian or Australian cities. Immigration policy is not a factor, however; in fact U.S. immigrants?in particular origin groups?are not less skilled. American institutions, including education, labor market structures, and social welfare, all reflect greater individualism and all contribute to the potential for inequality. Resulting higher poverty rates for America's immigrants explains their more extensive use of its weaker welfare system. Jeffrey Reitz's social institutional approach projects the impact of institutional restructuring?past and future?on the economic performance of immigrants in these countries.
