Immortality and the New Theodicy by George Gordon Pdf

This book is a philosopher's venture at the truth. Its author, it is true, finds himself unable "to reason as if Christianity had never been," or to enter the field of discussion in any other relation than that of a religious teacher. Yet he aims to conduct his inquiry "purely upon rational grounds," and therefore considers it "inadmissible to introduce into the argument the ultimate basis of Christian belief in the future life, the resurrection of Christ." The term "theodicy" he regards as a pivotal word in the attempt which he makes "to carry the question of the immortality of man to the moral conception of the universe for determination." Some of his earlier chapters, upon which we may not linger, are entitled, "The Evidence for the Denial," "Value of the Evidence for Denial," "Postulates of Immortality," and "Illogical Limitations," such limitations being the "theories of the remnant, election, or probation." Dr. Gordon, having discussed these topics as preliminary to his positive argument, then finds his central proof for immortality in the doctrine of evolution. One sentence will show his logic: "When man's ethical nature is reached, and where so much room and material for development exist, it would seem to be not a violent inference from evolution to suppose that this world is but the first stage in the moral discipline of the race." His argument, in other words, from this point through the concluding chapters turns on the truth of evolution. Many, however, will feel that he makes too much of this experimental theory, and, in a vigorous protest yet cherished against evolution, will contend that the philosopher puts to sea in an untried boat. Yet Dr. Gordon's book is able and thought-provoking. -The Methodist Review, Volume 79 [1897]

The Winning of Immortality (Classic Reprint) by Frederic Palmer Pdf

Frederic Palmer's work The Winning of Immortality is a religious look at the concept of afterlife. Republished here by Forgotten books, the author, a biblical scholar, presents an argument for the existence of life after death. Tracing the concept of an afterlife from early Hebrew history to Christian development to modern times, this is a book for both believers as well as non-believers that are interested in hearing an argument contrary to their beliefs. The book leans heavily on the text of The Bible for evidence, however the author does make note of the limitations of this approach. "In endeavouring then to learn of the condition of men after death," Palmer states, "We cannot appeal to 'what the Bible says' as if it were an utterance one and definite." Thus, the book begins by tracing the development of the concept of an afterlife through both the Old Testament and the New Testament, highlighting the changes in this doctrine over time. Later chapters abandon the examination of The Bible in order to make philosophical arguments for the existence of an afterlife. The author also examines the concept of immortality in other religions and in different periods in history, highlighting the beliefs of groups such as the Muslims and the Vikings. The book concludes with a discussion of the exclusive nature of immortality, and asks the question "Is there an afterlife for non-believers?" A reader's enjoyment of this book may depend on where they fall on the issue of an afterlife and their religious beliefs. This book was written by a Christian and seems to be aimed at a primarily Christian audience. Little of the evidence presented within is overly compelling, and it is doubtful that this text would change the mind of any non-believer. However, somebody who believes in an afterlife may find this book to be reaffirming and illuminating, and for these readers The Winning of Immortality is recommended. The Evidence of Immortality (Classic Reprint) by Jerome A. Anderson Pdf

Excerpt from The Evidence of Immortality This essay is an examination from a scientific view point into the probability of the continued existence of' human life after the death of the body. Of course, by scientific is meant the light Of reason applied to the phe nomena of life - not a demonstration by means Of the microscope or balances. Perhaps philosophical would be a better word to use in describing its method, but as all true science is philosophical, and all true philosophy scientific, the writer is not disposed to insist too strongly upon the term used. It is believed that a careful analysis of undisputed phenomena of existence, which have been perhaps overlooked, or which have not been assigned their ptoper importance, will establish the truth of the persist ence of life beyond the grave as certainly as any other fact of existence. It will assuredly place it upon a much firmer basis than that enjoyed by many Of the accepted scientific hypotheses, such as those which attempt to prove the existence and functions of the ether, atoms, matter itself, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Immortality of the Soul and the Final Condition of the Wicked Carefully Considered (Classic Reprint) by Robert W. Landis Pdf

Excerpt from The Immortality of the Soul and the Final Condition of the Wicked Carefully Considered It was remarked by the learned editor of the Presbyte rian, (the Rev. Dr. Engles, ) in his notice of my work on the Resurrection, that perhaps it was a defect that the author, in treating the subject, was too anxious to demolish every part of the theory of Professor Bush. This may have been so. But though the judicious suggestion has been constantly in mind during the preparation of the present tractate, the appearance of being too particular in meeting the recent assaults on the doctrine of immortality could not' well be avoided. The theme, in its far-reaching relations, to theology, philosophy, tradition, and Scripture exegesis, is most extensive. The writers to whom I reply, moreover, are very numerous, and taken collectively have, in one way or another, traversed the whole field of argu ment, pressing their assaults with great zeal and earnestness, and their writings are widely disseminated both in this country and Great Britain, and have made a deep impres sion on multitudes of minds.
